Landrotten Highlander reacted to Gaetan Bordeleau in Le Fleuron by Gaetan Bordeleau - FINISHED - 1:24
Thank you Pat, if it helps 1 person, this is a good thing.
Figurehead, done with 4 components : the figure head, 1 dolphin, the sixth one on this model, 1 flower on each side of the head and finally 1 stake to kill the dolphin.
Apple wood for a figure head is not the best choice for the same reason this wood is not used very much in furniture. Apple wood has a tendancy to crack. Plus if you look the wood under the microscope we can observe what llok like cristallised sugar in the wood. There is a small color difference between apple and cherry wood. Before trying I would have thought that apple wood take s better the small details than cherry. The results show the contrary and cherry wood is more stable than apple wood.
The microscope is very helpfull for the face. To keep a fix distance the figure is straped on a wood block. The smaller the object, the more light is needed to see all the details.
The most important thing in carving human is to try to keep proportions to all the parts in relation to each other. Without it results are less than convincing.
It is very helpfull to take photos to see details that we would not see without it. For this figure head it helped me to ote that the left arm was too long and the lips too larges.

Landrotten Highlander reacted to michael mott in Albertic by michael mott - FINISHED - Scale 1:100 - RESTORATION - Bassett-Lowke Model
Thanks everyone for the encouragement and visits to the work.
I set up the torch today it is fantastic, took a few tests to get used to how it works and to practice with some paste type silver solder which I have not used before.
I chose the smallest of the damaged handrail sections to begin realizing that if I made a complete mess of it it would be the least onerous to replicate.
I set it up in my original third hand( I need to get one of those new fangled ones)
and was pleased that it actually did solder together, I used the # 5 tip in the micro torch
After cleaning it up a bit I noted that it would either need to be plated again to get the same colour as the originals or I will have to find a way to paint and weather it to look like the originals, the painting option will have to be the first try because some of the other posts that need to be fixed are part of a longer section that would need to be plated as well and it would definitely look different.
the right hand rail has been given a quick brush with some Humbrol airfame silver, so this will become the test bed now for matching the other posts.
Once I am happy with the results I will solder the rest.

I decided to build a tow to my guns. It helps me with this colleague Mirek (http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/user/875-mirek/). It has a CNC milling machine.

Landrotten Highlander reacted to PeteB in HM Cutter Cheerful 1806 by Chuck - FINISHED - 1:48 scale - kit prototype
Hi Guys
Stunning Work Chuck Ive loved following the build - as a newbie here I feel like I'm walking where angels fear to tread suggesting this but thought I might share something which is sort of between both your and druxey preferences just a simple way to hold lines till you want to permanently fix them without using glue or marking them.
When I started rigging I found I needed at least three hands until I came across some various sized electrical heat shrink tubing. I used it for taking the strain during shroud seizing and just adjusting and holding any lines fixed or running in position till you were ready to finally tie them off.
Just cut two or three pieces of tube - thread the line or rope thru then around the block or deadeye then back up thru the tube. Move them to a position above or below where you want to place the final seizing. Hit them with a hair-dryer to whatever tension you want - easy or tight slip or no slip and when you've finished the final seizing take a no 11 blade to the rubber and it falls off with no marks or need for clean up.
.
Apologies for the Photo its from my Billings candidate for a Viking burial. Cheers Pete

Landrotten Highlander reacted to garyb in Swan-Class Sloop by garyb - 1:48
Hi All
Just been comparing my drawings off the head stern and deadwood with the pdf's Ben sent me (Thanks again Ben ) and they match almost perfectly so must be doing some thing wright. So have made a start cutting out the paper patterns. There are so many its easy to see why these sort of models take so long. For a bit of a change I tried laying some off the parts out to get the best layout for glue on the timber.
Yours Gary

How do I try to make easy the location of a part in the space.
I trace a line in the middle of the part. This line represent the high points and helps to lead the direction of the part. This way it prevents the part to deviate too much on a side or the other side.
I repeat for the 4 sides : top, bottom and both sides.
Examples with the drawing and the front of the legs. Results would be as good if I would trace the line as the green arrow shows.
The exact same principle apply to relief carving which is more a 2D parts, rather than a 3D parts. In this case, only 1 line is required.
If we cut the carving and look at one end, we see a square. A line is trace at the top, it represents once again the high point of the part. Then, to carve it is just a matter to knock out the 2 top corners.
In an easy way, 3D carving is just adding sides and bottom to the 2D.

Landrotten Highlander reacted to mtaylor in Licorne 1755 by mtaylor - 3/16" scale - French Frigate - from Hahn plans - Version 2.0 - TERMINATED
Thanks for the comments, the "likes" and just looking in...
At last, a real update as life (the Admiral's health) got in the way. The frame extensions have been removed and she's starting to look more like a frigate. I still need to sand them down to the sheer strake but I'll be doing that when I need a break from the gundeck work.
Here's the pictures... as always, a click on them will open them to full size (or what constitutes full size on MSW). The last two are more of a reference shot for examining things on my part but I thought I'd toss them in anyway. Sorry about the sawdust and mess.....

Landrotten Highlander reacted to wefalck in A Lorch Micro-Mill that never was ...
Some belated thanks, gentlemen !

I could not refrain from some more toolmaking. I will probably add various small attachments for particular purposes, as I am using the machine. Here is a small clamping table for flat objects.
It was milled from a piece of flat steel and the arbor for the 5 mm collet was hard-soldered in. The area underneath the slots is recessed so that I don’t need a wrench for holding the nuts while tightening the screws.
It allows to securely clamp pieces of sheet metal etc. for engraving or other types of milling operations. It can also be clamped in the small holder I made for the micro-vise.
You will see soon in the SMS WESPE thread, what sparked making this tool ...

Landrotten Highlander reacted to Jeronimo in THE 74-GUN SHIP by Jeronimo
Hello friends,
after about two years of construction I make a provisional building model on the "74 GUN-SHIP".
The occasion is the construction and testing of a completely different ship type.
See new topic in forum MSW.
(Sorry Google Translator)
Hallo Freunde,
Gruss Karl

might work if you use a plastic brush. The steel or copper brushes would imho be prone to create undesirable lines.
