    Making other masts:

The masts are made from more parts, cause I haven't a lathe. This way is easier for me and the masts stay strong enough owing to metal reinforcements.

Well, this was already described at this thread, just have a look:

And what´s new on the model.....
I have just started with masts and rigging, I try to make all these things according to plans from Anatomy of RC and also follow books and other credible information to achieve more realistic result.

    The bowsprit:

The ropes are handmade using the ropewalk. I use ropes by Corel or Amati...

    Hello dear friends!

Thank you very much for your comments and kind words, I am pleased and appreciate your support a lot.

After a longer break I'm back and I will show you the continuation of my Royal Caroline scratch build.

In addition, some weeks ago I finished my second plastic battleship - USS Missouri in a scale 1:350 (Tamiya manufacturer). My previous model IJN Yamato is also finished. Here are both build logs and a video, where you can see finished Missouri.

New additions include the vertical strips of wood on the hull mid-ship. I'm not sure of the name or function of these timbers, but I'm wondering if they could be for protection of the hull when the lowering of the ship's boats?

Also added are more ornamentation pieces, such as the eagles and the piece at the top of the gallery door.
Now to make these same pieces for the port side.

OK Sherry....leaving your Mayflower and browsing this current project....WOW! You go girl!
Don't know where you managed to develop such skills, but you have some serious talent going for you.
Hard to comprehend this being your first scratch build.
I'm pulling up a chair if you don't mind.

Finally a bit of an update!
First photo shows some shaped pieces at the bow. In my eagerness to finish and install these and the fancy trim overlay, I forgot to take pictures and these pieces are virtually hidden now!

Next up were the catheads and trim, made from basswood square stock.

I used copper sheet to cut strips and fashion the brackets that hold the catheads down.

    Everything is assembled.

Then installed on the model. I used copper wire to simulate bolts.

Here's a bow shot with catheads installed and bow braces and trim pieces.

This picture shows the copper brackets blackened with liver of sulphur. I used EdT's method of soaking them in acetone first, to clean and remove any coating that may have been present. Then I dipped a small paint brush in dilute liver of sulphur and applied to the brackets in situ, followed by a water rinse - it worked like a charm!

    Just a slightly different angle.

    That's it for now.

Decking view from stern. Now ready to start the planking. Billing Boats plans are lacking, especially for a beginner. Never stated anywhere that this is when to start planking or even any tips. I'm so glad that I came across this website for help - even before I joined. Still very happy about htis site!

Deck planking in place. I learned some tips on spacing, pattern etc.here. Also, there are too many plastic parts/fittings in this kit for my liking
    - I ended up replacing with wood, where I could, or at least covering the plastic with a veneer of wood.

    Working on the masts here.

Just put the dead-eyes in place and now have to urethane the masts. Then probably the biggest challenge of all - the rigging.

I know that the Mayflower was a merchant ship, but she did carry some canons. I like the look of at least some canon ports open. The kit does not come with any guns, so I set out to make some from dowel.
This is how they turned out. I know they are a little "chunky" and probably a little out of scale for the ship, but this was my first shot at it. (no pun intended)  - Originally Posted: Sun May 06, 2012

This, as everyone out there already knows, was a daunting task...planking the hull. I was fairly proud of this accomplishment! Again, so glad that I learned here, to add steelers. Otherwise the planking probably would have swept wildly upward at the bow. This was an older kit as well, and the wood was very dry. A dip in warm water for a while took care of that.

Now the rubbing strakes and gun ports have been added.

This is one of the plastic boats that came with the kit.

This is what I did instead:

Now she's been stained. The wood that came with the kit was all really pale in colour. I chose not to do the hull in white below the water line.

This stern detail was before I toned down the bright blue windows.

    Boats are finished

Update time at the Aggy but also for the Fonz
Second planking and sanding of that on the Aggy is done !
It only takes me a couple of months to do it .
Now I need some filler at some places and sanding it again.
It has to be a smooth surface for the copperplates.
But...after the filling and sanding it's painting time !
Then I can start with the coppering.

I decided I needed a break from half-frames.  So for a few days I've been doing some prosthetic work on my Admiral's fake leg.  So far, I haven't screwed it up even though I'm hitting it with a heat gun,  dremel and cut off wheel, and tolulene.

As time permits, I cleaned up the salvaged keelson along with the salvaged fore and main mast steps.  The keelson is now glued into position after tweaking the fit and the mast steps are fitted but not glued.  There's markings inside for re-fitting them into position and also marked up the exterior for drilling and fitting the pedestals.    As soon as I can figure out a way to drill them square in all dimensions (not a square hole but exactly perpendicular) I'll do it.  This beast is too big for the drill press or the mill... <sigh>

Also, minimal fairing at this point on the inside of the hull.

Anyway... picture.  And as always, errors, omissions, and stupid mistakes, while not always intentional are subject to be commented upon by those who read this.

    Part 76 –Middle Deck Framing

Since the last post eight middle deck beams and one pair of half beams have been installed – along with their hanging knees and pillars.  Lodging knees will follow.  The first picture shows the first four beams and two pillars installed.

The beams are glued bolted to the clamps with copper wire - epoxied in.  There will also be copper wire bolts through the beams into the tops of each hanging knee for extra strength.  The pillars are reinforced with wire into the beams top and bottom.

The next picture shows the first of the carlings installed.

These are going in after the pillars to leave space for fitting those.  In the next picture, the next beam has been glued in and is awaiting its hanging knees.

Once the beams are in place to support the clamp over the view openings, they can be cut out – as in the above picture.  The next picture shows the first two of three openings cut into the forward view area.

The next picture shows those openings from the inside.  This area is now ready for the headers around the fore mast and the half beams to those headers.

The areas below the middle deck are having wax finish applied progressively as the work above is finished. In the next picture the two headers and half beams have been installed astride the fore mast opening,

The beam, knee and pillar bolts mentioned above were also in when this picture was taken. The last picture shows the current extent of the work completed.

This work is going faster than the lower deck framing, mainly because there are no knees on the pillars.  Patterns for the middle deck knees were also lofted more carefully using a different process - meaning the initial fits are better.  Also, deferring the lodging knees is probably more efficient.

Nils, thanks but I needed to rework the handle to accommodate the bowsprit.

Today I oiled the deck and fitted the main bowsprit hardware.

    Then reworked the handle.

Next I will add some guides for the hull to find the keel track. then give it a coat of paint
