trippwj reacted to popeye the sailor in Holiday Harbor by popeye the sailor - 1:20 scale - multi build
thanks Lawrence      this was the easiest of my other two thoughts.....an escalator and  an elevator    thanks for the good word.

I wish I had taken a few more pictures........but I was fumbling around at the table.......and I came up with this.  I gave it an upper and lower landing.  I really should have painted it before I assembled it,  but as I mentioned,  it went together very quickly.

the two pieces of wood at the tops are just there to keep it square until it dries totally.   I did this Tuesday evening.    I did frame out the bottom of the upper and lower landings,  seeing that the grain of the wood goes side to side  {very easy to crush it....I already broke one of them earlier on}.  I didn't bother to put the 'kicks' in....just the treads.  a couple of the treads are slightly off.......to mess with it will mean making another one.  so I won't bother.  once completely done,  it will never be noticed.

the dry fit showed that I need to make a small adjustment to the opening,  and I may need to add a threshold to the opening at the upper deck.   I'm leaning toward making this a separate piece.......once the lights are put on and the deck is put back on,  it will be made so it can be slid into place.  now that it's fleshed out,  I have a few ideas for it's enhancement.

I also have an update on the Tree Boat.   I've done a good portion of the planking.   I had to redo one side of the bow though........I forgot that the keel needs to be sanded down a bit.   I had it riding all the way up the keel,  instead of tapering it at the bulkhead line.   the keel is uneven and has a few chiggers in it.  I'll set up the belt sander and work the keel so the bow end has a nicer curve to it,  and keel line is evened out..

don't ask me what's up with the planking.......I dunno.  it's Obechi,  I can tell ya that much.   I got it in a bundle of wood,  in a kit I received,  from a friend that could no longer continue his build.   I got new wood for it,  and hatched out a twisted idea for it,  in waiting for it to arrive.   but.......this is another story    anyway........after fixing the bow,  I can now plank the rest of the hull,  without fear of any more trouble.

I know it odd that it sits on my trash can like that..........I figure that if it gets too messed up,  it doesn't have far to go            bad joke...........right!  gotcha~!       nawwwwww......little chance of that.......I haven't tossed one yet

Cannon Fodder, I would recommend blade #12, which is a mini curved blade, meant for that type of cutting.
But your Emma is turning out nicely.

It was actually made out of 3 pieces of wood, Paul.   The main piece was oak and the other two were pine.   I'm planning scribing the lines in as they're straight and not tabled like the English ships.  Unfortunately, I don't have anymore of the original boxwood that used when I cut the blank otherwise, I would re-cut.   What I do have is noticeably different so... for eye-appeal, I'll go with what I have.

A number of wrecks from the Penobscot expedition have been investigated. There is an interesting article published a number of years ago in the Nautical Research Journal discussing variations in framing systems discovered on the several wrecks investigated. Without digging through my pile of NRJ's I am guessing that the article was mid 1990's and might have been written by Clayton Feldman.

There are several posts discussing essential modelling books. In my opinion, the best and most cost effective collection of research material available are the CD's of past Nautical Research Journals available from the NRG office.

As an early birthday present I was given this book and although I have only skimmed through it so far I am impressed. I will write a full review once I have had more time to read through it. The model ships are very well photographed and the paintings have been cleanly scanned and with the pages being large it is easy to appreciate the models. I have included a few pictures from the book to show examples. I will gladly post more if anyone is interested.

In response to the overwhelming demand for 'close ups'  I have pushed my steam powered computer to the very edge and reposted these pics in higher quality. Hopefully they will open when clicked on at about three times the actual size and show more detail..

This looks amazing...  as a conservator, I only wish I was in the right discipline to apply.   I am a paper and book conservator, this would be geared towards 3-D or objects people.

In either case, somebody around here might be interested in attending.

Well, now, I guess it's time for some updating!

The workshop is now re-floored and operating.  The ECB is on the table and have added the garboard strake and the next strake above.  Moving along very slowly, but progress is occurring!

Since the weather was so nice, I took her down to the shore for some pictures in her "natural habitat".

I have attached the stern holder!

I had to add some wood to get the stern holder to the correct height. This way, there is a uniform height for the waterline, helping to establish the height of the side templates. I will make the templates once I have the styrene.

I will have to shape the stern to make it fit correctly. The biggest part of that is carving the indent. That area is the wood above the red line.

Once the stern fits, I can start applying the station lines to the hull, wich should help me get the base for the keel drawn on. I will need to create a centerline, with two parallel lines, 1/16" away, one on each side. I have noticed, whatever I say I have to do takes longer to do than I thought. That's fine though, I have an extra 24 hours this year !
    Until next time!

A quick update, (mostly to post on leap day ). My father is going to pick up some styrene sometime soon, and in the meantime, I am going to mark station lines on the hull.
    Until next time!

Thought you may be interested in how the New York Register of Shipping showed the framing of ships in 1857 & 1858.  No specific ship named.  Mystic Seaport has many of the volumes scanned and available to view at http://library.mysticseaport.org/initiative/ShipRegisterList.cfm

This is from the inaugural 1857 issue.
