  1.  I was using the disc sander sanding both pieces at once and did not realise one had moved forward,

Don't you hate when that happens? Something similar happened when I was gluing a hull/frame panel for my

Woody Joe's HIGAKIKAISEN (with it's unusual hull construction). I was so focused on the gluing, I didn't notice that one side slide a little, making the entire thing just a little kitty-wumpus.

  2. I think I did something similar to what Catopower described. I can't remember for sure (and can't tell by looking), but I think my stern windows and frames were some sort of thin plywood?? I believe I dry-brushed the brass color on after painting the inner sections.

Here is a picture, it is my first attempt with my cellphone and I admit it might not be that clear:

  3. There is also the fact that often the average person doesn't know what they are looking at to know if it is right or wrong. When I go visit my dad at his Mustang restoration shop, I can see a car in there and go wow!, that is a great looking car. He can then point out the different items that make it not so great.

I will always remember the time my wife was showing a painting of the USS Constitution to one of her friends, and announced it was the Cutty Sark (her friend nodded knowingly). Innocence of such techie things, is one of the reasons I find her irresistible (I guess that is sexist.. I am a terrible person).

  4. Nice work on the planking, Don! I use the same technique (weld bond and CA glues)) for my planking. The CA is a "liquid clamp" which holds while the Weldbond cures.

Thanks Dave. I swear by this method and have never had any issues with doing it this way.

Do you use thin CA Don and Doc (Dave?) I am afraid I am too clumsy and often have CA glue ooze into the opening, making a nice dark spot on the wood. I have had better luck though, with thick CA.

I guess I haven't commented for a while on your model Don, but it really is coming along nicely!

  5. I have been looking at Mississippi riverboat kits. To help me keep things straight, I decided to compile some information on each. I thought I would post it here in case somebody else finds it useful. I found 5 kits. I listed links to build logs that I found. Hopefully I did not miss any.

  6. Reminded of a story. A Friday nite beercan from Rush Creek to Chandler's Landing and back. It was dusk, and flat. We had rounded and were ghosting with the kite in 'maybe' 3-4 knots. Upwind comes a Harmony 24 who just dropped her genoa. A young boy was on the bow, covered with lines and draped with the sail. It was a silent kind of evening, and over the water floats this plaintive little voice saying "Daddy .. what the sh*t do I do now?"

Great story, thanks for the chuckle. The boy is lucky he has a dad who is out there sharing with him.

  7. rather than wonder why any build log stopped PM the builder and ask what's up, do you need help?, did you give up? what can we do to help you?

I like this idea. If the person has simply lost interest, chances are, he won't be here reading the PM anyway, so no harm done. But if he is lurking and scratching his head in bewilderment, such a friendly nudge might be just the thing he needs to speak up. :)

  8.

These people may have finished their boats but chose not to continue the log because they felt it wasn't good enough to share. Some of the people on this forum are 30 plus year veterans at this hobby and they make such beautiful ships that it may drive away novices from posting.

Heck, I have been building models (with breaks) for about 60 years, I still can't build anything to compare with the beautiful models seen in here. (I maintain those plastic WWII kits built as a kid, are legitimate models, and not sticky lumps of glue).

  9. I think it is common among many (myself included), to get all enthusiastic about a new hobby, then; when the new-car-smell is gone, to loose interest. It is nothing to do with the hobby itself, just human nature.  Witness that boat sitting among the weeds in the back yard, or that guitar gathering dust in the corner (I am guilty of both, as well as others I can't recall at the moment).

Sometimes, you just have to try a bunch of different hobbies that strike your fancy, hoping you find one that sticks. One suggestion I would make- is to not make a build log on your first project, just read what others are doing, and ask questions.

Of course, I could be mistaken. :)

  10. Great topic.  As I visit the many websites of kit manufacturers and distributors I see an abundance of model of ships with sails.  I would like to see more kits of ships built after the golden age of sails.  The early steam ship era represents a large population of ships that would be interesting as models.  The first monitors, tugs, trawlers, riverboats, etc., would all be very interesting kits to build.

I am not a ship historian, but I think that the early steam era would provide some great models.

I second this opinion. :)  I would love to build a static model of one of those plumb bow yachts from the 1930s like the Bluebird of Chelsea; big, beautiful and in-your-face full of detail. I know there are scratch plans for her, but as a scratch builder, I make a good piano player (and I can't play the piano).

  11. I have found that my favorite part of model building, is the phase that I am about to start. My least favorite is the part that I just finished.  So, all-in-all; I love/hate each phase in turn.

Having said that, I do like tying ratlines. I get into a sort-of zen like state, except I am focused on the ratlines instead of my breathing. Disclaimer: I know nothing about Zen, so any relationship between my opinion and reality is purely coincidental.

  12. Thanks Skip...

If You want to, I could send to You a photos of this model done by an advanced beginner (I could say intermediate) modeller ...

    Regards, Zoran

Thank you Zoran for those great photos. Your "intermediate" modeller is a master in my eyes. :)   I suspect others here would enjoy seeing them as well?

  13. Dear gentlemen,

we are happy to inform you that we are able to give free delivery for North America for amounts exceeding 200.00 Euro ... The models that we currently recommend are: Ragusian Carrack, Trajta (fishing-cargo of Korcula) and Batelina (the boat )... but of course, you can get all the other MarisStella models that you want to ...

    Best regards,

    MarisStella,

    Europe

Hello. Sorry to be dense, but I would like to confirm that the two photos in your post: "15_KARAKA A4 KOLOR" 1 and 2 are the "Ragusian Carrack" in your text, correct?  Also, there are small differences between the two photos (figurehead and stern decorations), just curious about that.  :)

    Thanks for your help.
