CDW reacted to Landlubber Mike in Walrus (Airfix 1/48), NeOmega Catapult, and HMS Albatross (Niko 1/700) by Landlubber Mike
I've made good progress on the Albatross - everything is now installed except for the Walrus (to be seated on the catapult) and the small boats.  I also have two cover options for that entryway into the bowels of the ship where the Walrus and other big items were stored.  I can model it closed or open with the cover pulled back.  I'm considering open just for a little more visual interest.

Next up is to clear coat, add a little shadowing/highlighting/weathering, add the remaining items, final clear coat, then rigging (which there is a lot of) and ensign.  This has been a really fun kit of quite an interesting subject.

    Thanks for looking in!

As hot as it has been lately, Alan may be second-guessing his decision to move to Florida. Feels-like temperature will reach 110+ today according to the forecast. Humidity is terrible.
Just like you, I have been wondering how Alan is doing and hope all is well.

Hope you have time to get back to your Castle one day!

In an effort to enhance the appearance of the "stumps" provided in the kit, I placed some fine threads around the masts, respecting the number of turns and distances between the coils as described in the Anatomy of the Ship book:

It does indeed improve the appearance of those short stubs, without departing from the Admiralty presentation:

Overall, I am satisfied with the way the rear wheel came out given it's a first try. Practice makes perfect and I've learned a few things giving this method a try.
Will move on to other areas of construction and continue with the front wheel later.

The bottles of Tamiya airbrush cleaner contain the exact same active ingredient as Tamiya thin cement. The airbrush cleaner contains 240 ml while the thin cement contains 40 ml. My supplier sells the airbrush cleaner for 7.29 per bottle while thin cement sells for 4.19. You can refill your thin cement bottle over 6 times with one bottle of airbrush cleaner. It all does the same thing only at a fraction of the cost. Just thought you might want to know how to save a few bucks.

Ok folks the tracks are now installed and a little clip showing it moving.  I think the track tension may be too tight or it’s meeting resistance somewhere because it doesn’t like to stay moving without encouragement.

Alright time to move on fellas to the next project. The inner door actuators kept braking off so made them out of .015" guitar string with a brass head then drilled the body of the actuator and just glued to the door only(bad pic).I used Alcad smoke first time ever using it easy just went a little heavy on the R/side of the plane. The bombs got a wash of Tamiya brown right on MrColor and then Tamiya grey wash both done with a q-tip did not touch the paint. Thanks for looking and the likes.

Seats of ease: being located at the bow, a sailor might need a seat belt in foul weather or else go flying off that seat like a slingshot. 😄

Small problem -- the indicated part does not exist (34d is just an edge strip), neither as a printed part, a laser-cut element, nor even a numbered part in the diagram. Strange. Gonna have to mull this one over a bit -- the needed part is too big to conveniently cut out with my hole punch.

I visited the Smithsonian museum in 2016 but I don't recall seeing the Arado 234 on my visit. Maybe it was there and I just missed it. I was rather rushed through the visit because my wife, daughter, and granddaughter were with me and as one can imagine, their interest in aircraft didn't nearly match my own. One can spend several days in DC and never begin to make a detailed study of the sites to be seen there. The air and space portion needs at least a full day all on its own.
What he was telling me about, in general, was how the canopy sections fit together and the black gasket material that was between the sections. There was more, but I just don't recall everything he said about it.

    14 cylinders x 15 parts per cylinder = 210 parts. 🤪

So far I have cut out 70 parts and assembled 32 of them.

    To be continued . . .

There was an elderly gentleman at the IPMS show I attended earlier in the year who told me some facts concerning the Arado 234 that is part of the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC. He said he had worked there helping to restore that particular aircraft. I wish I had written down everything he told me as he was explaining facts about how the canopy parts fit together but I could not follow without a clear visual image of what he was talking about. Maybe one day I will run into him again and have him tell me about it one more time. This time I will take notes. He had donated a 1:48 Hasegawa Arado 234 and detail sets which I won in a raffle held at the show. Maybe one day I'll get around to building the 1:48 version.
Your model looks great at this stage. Keep up the beautiful work.
