Recommend model kit for the USS Constution
JeffT replied to Noblenut's topic in Wood ship model kits
The Model Shipways kit is a good kit. I'm building that one right now. Just keep in mind that its not an easy kit to build and there are a lot of parts that have to be scratch built. -

So, now that I've reached a good stopping point on the elephant in the room (my conny build), its time to get back to work on the longboat. As previously mentioned, I already know that the 4th row of planking needs to be made from scratch. Because of that I decided to do the lining of the hull over again since there are some variances and to make sure I get the planks right. I like to use a different approach to lining of the hull using a proportional divider. I know that there are 6 rows of planks remaining so I set the dividers to 6. Then I measure the remaining area to plank on each frame. I just use pinstriping tape and cut it to the correct length. Then I stick the tape to a flat surface, card stock in this case. Then just spread the dividers to cover the length. The result at the other end of the divider is the required width of each plank for that particular frame. I then walk the divider down the frame from the edge of the previously installed plank leaving a small hole. The draw the line at each mark. The result is below. Most of the marks were pretty much spot on with the previous marks. As you can see at the bow, there were some variances in the markings compared to the first time I did it. One side done and on the next.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
