I am not famiar with the Mamoli kit but have seen the version from Blue Jacket by the modeler Al Ross.  I was going to say plank the stern like most vessels of the time but I think these two photos will help you.  I hope they are not removed.

I would have to go with the transistion from sail to steam along with working craft such as trawlers and freighters.  Unfortunately I have seen most people loking at sails or WW2 vessels such as PT Boats, Destroyers etc.  To keep the costs down decent and accurate plans should be the main component.  The basic materials wil work just fine.

Nice job of plankng.  A natural finnish will really show it off.  But I am partial to painting myself.  As I did on my model.

The model is a littlee rough at the moment because of neglect and my model being tossed into a box, but you can see the paint scheme I use for the the hull.

I will be very happy when I can get back to it and clean it up and repair the rough handling it has.
I have seen these models colored in wood and painted.  But the choice will be up to and what you are comfortable with

The departure of Peking for Germany is going to come as a big surprise to many. News about the planing of her move has not been widely disseminated and one day the ship will be gone and people are going to be shocked. In New York City she is the most visible tall ship simply because she is so huge. Her masts are visible from blocks away, poking above the lower buildings of the downtown skyline. Its a view new Yorkers have gotten used to since the 70's. But the ship is simply too big for the South Street Seaport Museum. Shes 377' long and 170' high. When the Museum decided they couldn't keep her, they started looking around to see if any other U.S. cities could take her, free of charge. Many would have, but no city with a waterfront has a spot long enough to accommodate the addition of a 377' historic ship. Since the 70's, urban waterfront development has (rightly)  returned what were once industrial zones to public leisure areas where the citizens can enjoy the water. The city of Hamburg, in Germany, has a very long industrial waterfront history and this is the city where she was built and which was her home port during her working life, AND they had room for her. A German Non-Profit was formed to raise funds to get Peking to Germany ( even as a free gift, money would have to be found to pay for the trip across the Atlantic on a heavy lift ship) and this effort failed. At this time two years ago it looked as if the Peking would have to be melted down for scrap! Last year the German Federal Government stepped in and announced that they would pay for the transfer of the Peking and for a Museum complex at the Hamburg waterfront. A multi million Euro proposition. The last I heard there was still some trouble on the German end concerning where this new Museum will be located.

Thanks so much to each of you for your visits and nice comments.
Slowly getting back to the shop after taking several days to allow some healing after my last surgery. Turned out to be a little more extensive than I anticipated.
Glad to report all is going quite well.

For a little change of pace, I spent the last couple of days turning and dry fitting the three masts and the bowsprit. I plan to work on the tops, beginning today.

    Cheers all

I am quite certain that with your skills and enthusiasm, you will not have any problems finding a job in that industry and help design the future marvels sailing our seas.
Good luck and we all hope to see you back on this forum with your next project.

Here are some pics of the typical mediaeval arrangement of huge wedges for the mainmast at the partners and the reinforcing wooldings. There were many variations on this . I do not exaggerate the size of the wedges:

    Kevin,

Thanks for the support! The hull is 1/2 way there - I still have the stbd. side to grind down to shape. Once that's done, I can establish the waterlines, bootopping, and start work on horizontal hull plate layout - this will be a bitch since these curvatures are guesstimates. A few of us have talked about a trip to Norfolk to take a survey by boat and record measurements of the actual ship's plate lines. It's still up in the air.

    Later,

@dvm27; Cheers dvm. It's been a great model to work on - and a pleasure to work on a modern design.

@mtaylor; It does, I'm glad I went ahead with changing the base colour.

@EJ_L; Thank you my friend. I'm glad you have enjoyed the build. I have enjoyed sharing it with you all. I will keep you updated on the next project.

@dgbot; Spent a while in Michigan a couple of years back - as I have more family over your side than in Scotland now. I can imagine, I'd love nothing more then to lounge around and do some fishing on a yacht like this.

@NavalArchAngel; Thanks. It's been an absolute pleasure to build and share. It has been pretty intense these past few weeks so I will have a gap after my London show and before graduating for a little holiday.
