EJ_L reacted to John Allen in Licorne 1755 by mtaylor - 3/16" scale - French Frigate - from Hahn plans - Version 2.0 - TERMINATED
Mark,
I Know you remember when I had to decide to redo all the ratlines on the Vic. I had several toddies wrote down pluses and negatives. With a clear head the next day I did the same. Was no help! But the old adage if the shoe fits wear it, well it didn't and I grabbed the scissors and cut. Made the right decision I would not have been satisfied leaving it. If it does not feel right change it then have the good luck your the master.

I find the decision process easier than that, I long ago decided that if I think "hmm maybe I should fix that, it's really not as good as I want" then I should just stop and fix it. If it's bubbled up to that point in my mind it's something that will annoy me every time I look at it and disappoint me when I show the result to others so it seems to me the decision is pretty obvious. It may involve a considerable number of profane invectives of course and possibly throwing some of the offending bits around the room once you have them off, but no point in delaying or waffling about it - if you think you maybe should fix it, you should.

very good progress Sjors.........don't you dare go in the closet! I don't blame you for your thoughts on doing part work.........I find that with a kit, some steps can be combined, or would work better if the step before it was complete {most of the time I wing it anyway }. the paint work looks really good so far......can't wait to see her when the painting is done

Looking good indeed! Speaking of your work bench, it is looking more and more like a veteran builder's desk with nice storage, tools, clutter and only a tiny space left to actually build on!

EJ_L reacted to BANYAN in Licorne 1755 by mtaylor - 3/16" scale - French Frigate - from Hahn plans - Version 2.0 - TERMINATED
Just when you thought...... you always resolve these things Mark so I am sure will resolve this one. As COG says - your model but my thoughts...
Leave the holly in-situ and if the colour is off for your needs simply stain it with a dye/ink/wood stain (not paint it) as this will still look like natural timber as dyes/some stains tend to penetrate and not cover the grain of the wood? A light dye/stain of the right colour (experiment off model) may resolve it for the planks in place on the bulwarks, and you can dye the others off the model for future stuff. Sorry, hopefully not motherhood statements.... not intended if so.
cheers

A brave move, Mark - but it's no good leaving it if you're not completely happy.

EJ_L reacted to popeye the sailor in Thermopylae by popeye the sailor - Sergal - 1:124 scale
thanks for the kind comments.....and to those who hit the like button. you might have seen that small imperfection on the starboard stern.....two small holes.....I took care of them. they were filled in and painted over. as I'm sure others do.......imperfections are fixed as we see them. we have our cameras as our worst critics......we have no need to do it ourselves I have four days off......
plenty of time to sit here and play my car inspection is due.......and I have a few things to do to it. one day I will have to get my butt in gear and get it done. I still have time.
there's an odd point made Bob........I haven't done too many small scale projects. the AmericA was the smallest I've done, besides the Gundalow......the Nordkap was the largest. the odd thing about this one is...I seem gravitated towards it.......so much so, that the trawler seems to have taken a back seat again. fear not trawler fans.......I haven't forgotten it. the Syborn, as well as the other two have been on my mind.......anyone's guess what will erupt from there but I guess that's the beauty in having so many projects.......I can gravitate anywhere, and never leave my seat
thanks for look'in in and following along....I appreciate your comments and suggestions

It's coming along beautifully Denis. I never cease to be amazed by what you accomplish in this small scale.

Well done Dennis, it always amazes me how much you get done in a day. Not only quantity but quality too.

EJ_L got a reaction from coxswain in Licorne 1755 by mtaylor - 3/16" scale - French Frigate - from Hahn plans - Version 2.0 - TERMINATED
My first reaction is to say leave it, especially if you are a long way into it. My next thought though is I have seen you redo just as much for even less noticeable reasons and so I think this will bother you the rest of the build and after and therefore tear it out. That sucks but I think you will feel better and with the effort you are putting into this build I think it is the right thing to do.
As for what to use instead, I think the cherry wood may come out too dark for a red ocher. I used pear on my Couronne build and while it is more pinkish than red, I think it works and I can just say it is sun bleached!

Well... slept on it... no beer....<sigh> I've ripped off the holly and cut some swiss pear. Once things are cleaned up a pit, I'll commence planking again. I only had two strakes down so no big loss.
I'm not painting, Carl except with the natural color of the wood. Holly would work for American or British but not the French as they didn't use whitewash.
Semi-visible, Ken. There's a large open area in the middle of the ship where this area would be visiable.

Heller's 1/100 Soleil Royal (plastic) has no entryways either.
Not sure how accurate this kit may be.

Exactly! there are a few kits out there, that are slotted and have backings for the dummy guns. one of these days, perhaps I will have a chance to enjoy such demented pleasure

EJ_L got a reaction from coxswain in Le Soleil Royal by EJ_L - FINISHED - Sergal - Scale 1:77 - 1669 Version
I've been planking the hull some more on the port side and started to lay out the gun ports. I have quickly noticed that they are not lining up with the dummy blocks that were installed before hand. Not a big deal to move or install new ones but a little annoying. The more frustrating part is that some of the ports are intersecting the frames. So I had to do some shuffling of the ports and I think I now have a pattern that will work. We shall see...
While laying out the port holes I got to wondering if S.R. had an actual entryway? As most 1st rates did and being as tall as she is I cannot imagine there not being one however, there is no detail showing an entry. I have no problem scratch building one as that is what I did for La Couronne but I thought I would ask if anyone knew the answer or had seen a model or drawing showing an entry.
And now on tot he picture!
