Hi Chris, you can be sure that this site will be where the build log goes, that project is a bit down the line however!   Scott

    Hello all!!!
    What a wonderful site!

I have learned so many tips and techniques that I cant wait to try them all.
To think I'm rubbing shoulders with some of the true master builders and designers!
From what I've seen, all are master builders on this site!

I'm not new to modeling, been building since I was a kid, but have recently moved back to wooden ships.
Should be finishing the Model Shipways 18th Century Longboat within the next day or 2.
The pic, I hopefully attached successfully, Is a few days old. The shrouds and Forestay have been attached.
Then its on to the Niagara!
Once I learn how to use the site a little better, I hope to have a Niagara build log.

I look forward to working with all of you!!

Here are some shots of the Garagemahal/Goatlocker Shipyard. I am a blessed man and the Admiral is the best. The downstairs area is my woodworking shop, upstairs is the Goatlocker Lounge and Shipyard.

I've shown this photo of my workshop in a previous thread on the same topic. This was taken last November. The Portland is somewhat further along.
A portion of my 12' x 16' model railroad is seen at the far left. The second photo, shot by Phil Monat, gives you an introduction to the level of detail
I incorporated over 33 years of construction. Layout has approximately 8' of water front.

I had the display case custom built for my office.  Yea - I do have a lot of hobbies - astrophotography, sports cars, pretty much any kind of model building too.  I have a 9 foot shelf HO layout with 7 steam engines.  I guess I like steam engines too.

And just to let everyone know I am still working on models.....not just a hippie activist.

Today the step was built.  It has a laser etched slot to aid in its assembly.  Then at the bow there is what I would call a "standard" of sorts.   It has a hole in it to help secure the pole for the flag.   Another will be drilled through the platform below it but I figured it would be damn near impossible to laser cut the hole on the platform and then line them up so the pole is straight.  So I will be drilling with the bit running through the hole in the standard making sure that afterwards the pole will sit upward and straight.

Except for a very few details inboard,  the inboard part of the project is complete.  NNow I will move outboard and begin to finish up the carvings.   Then after that its the home stretch.    Happy modeling everyone!!!!

Just a quick update to let you all know I haven't closed the dry dock.  There is so much going on this summer.  The Admiral got a new job but she works most weekends and will be starting on evenings soon leaving the housework chores and kids to me (my kids are 9 and 11).  I don't mind helping out but it limits my time working on the Bluenose.  Plus, when I do have free time I like to spend it outside enjoying the beautiful weather.  I spend time on this forum reading other build logs although I haven't commented on a lot of them.  I would imagine that aside from a half hour here or there, I won't get back to serious building until September / October but I will be back and look forward to it.

Well Eric.good eye. Did a little whittling and some paint and got em a little closer. hopefully won't be too noticeable..I both hate it when that happens but am glad it was caught early enough to fix.

OK ,got the stern closed in but not quite detailed on the stern side of it. The interior framing has been sanded thin and ready for the interior planking. I'll need to put the filler piece in first. I used a dremel and sanding drum and or a coarse wood bit to thin out . Had to take about a sixteenth over all. Check it out.

Bloody but unbowed I continue with the battle - sorry a bit melodramatic!

Back to fairing the bulwarks structures.  I cut a 1/8" slot and a 3/32" slot in a piece of scrap to gauge the thickness of the sills and lintels. It made it easy to find high spots that needed a bit more sanding.

And after some time I got to this stage.

Checked the fairing at deck level and the top of the bulwarks with a pre-bent planking strip.

The photo above convinced me to take a bit more off the 1st bulkhead extension - it lies closer now.

I believe everything is now within reasonable tolerances so I am ready to go on.

    Hello Everyone,
    A little progress to report.
Last time, I had made a failed attempt at painting the decorative molding for the transom. I think my second attempt has worked well enough. I read about the technique in a Blue Jacket newsletter; it was a new idea to me, but probably old hat to most of you. I first soaked the piece in vinegar, which was a good thing as it removed the cheesy looking gold finish on the cast metal, which might have interfered with a decent paint finish. I then primed the piece with white primer and then applied several coats of a bronze colour. As as rule I seldom like using metalic paints, but I have to admit that this Model Master bronze worked really well. Then I painted it with polyurethane to seal it - (one which requires mineral spirits to clean up, not water.) Then lastly two coats of the blue, not worrying too much about getting it on the bronze, and just wiping it off the high spots with a dampened rag. I'm sorry the pictures aren't better, but my camera doesn't focus well at such short distances.

I have also finished the second layer of planking and I guess now it's time to paint the hull. I know that sounds like sacrilege to some but I tend to like painted hulls.

This year we are having the rainiest spring I can remember, so more time in my basement than I expected.

    David

OMG, Keith, your words are so comforting.    But I know whatever mental blocks I set in place are mine to take down.  We all live in a world only six inches wide, the space between our ears.

For anyone who has ever had a needle stuck in the tip of their finger, you know it doesn't want to go very far.  Lots of cartilage and other hard masses stand in the way.  That's what I'm seeing as I get to the bow.  There is so much stuff in there, the push pins need more than a push.  A hammer comes to mind...

I'd love to do the rubber band thing but I've found if the banding covers the plank, you can't see if the plank is tight to the existing plank.  I had to remove one plank from the other side because it drifted away when I wrapped it with banding.

    Maybe shrink wrap?

Moving onto the beakhead bulkhead deck. Basswood strips were planked. It was said that the top of the planked deck should flush with the door opening sill. It was already a little lower than the sill. After sanding, it is even lower. May be I have to plank a second layer and make it good. Should I sand the deck to a curve shape ? Lower at both sides and higher at center ?

This is my first time building a wooden ship. I found it difficult to visualize the shape of the stern so I think I better do a stern filler. Here is the pair. What do you guys think ? Are they look right ? They are not yet attached onto the frame.
