    Thanks Tom,

I've been avidly reading through a bunch of logs and "how-to"s over on the RC Groups site. Plenty of good advice there, as well as some great examples. Even though I've never done it before, I'm pretty confident that I'll be able to make a reasonable job of it. Worst case - sand it all back to bare wood again and go the epoxy resin route instead.

Tom - yes, the hull will be fibre glassed. This will be a first for me, so stay tuned!

    Deck Planking

Planking the deck has presented no particular problem thus far. The instructions direct you to alternate a caulking strip with a plank, but I found it easier to laminate one of each together and then shape and fit as a single unit. The only tricky part of shaping was the last plank on either side around the side of the cockpit, which just took a little time and patience to ensure a good fit. The ends of the planks were trimmed close to the forward end of the cockpit and then taken closer still with a sanding drum in the rotary tool, before finishing by hand.  Once all the planking is complete, the surface will be sanded level such that all caulking strips will be level with the planks (at the moment they stand just a little proud). Not bad for a day’s work! There will be a brief hiatus for a couple of weeks as I’ll be travelling with work.

Thanks Dirk, Carl, Piet, Denis, Jeff, Stubby, and thanks for your interest Janet, welcome aboard!

I got all the brackets on. I decided to change them from red to black. I made the elevation screws. Managed to get 2 pieces of wire through the screws to make 4 screw handles instead of 2.  I tried to get threads on them so they would look like screws but failed terribly and had to give up that effort. Years ago when I worked as a bench jeweler I could have used silver ear ring posts. Wish I had some of them now- they would have looked really good. Anyway, all the carronades are on the sleds & ready to put in place & rigging. I am satisfied with where they sit in the gun ports. Not perfectly centered but close enough for what I have to work with.

The agony.....besides my toothache.....its whether to gild or not???

I am leaning towards no gilding.  I do like it but its  just me.  It also shows every last surface pimple and carving screw up.   But it is a royal barge.

I think I like the way the carvings look with just WOP applied.   Which means I must carve another queen Anne cipher.   Oh well!!  The close-ups are also brutal....the smaller image looks more like the gilded example in reality.  It looks rather nasty in that large photo.

This is pretty mundane stuff, but it's been a while since I made a contribution, so I figured what the heck!
These three photos show the installation of the anchor and its cable.  I prefer to give my coils a bit of a disheveled look, so I build them up slowly, by applying diluted Elmer's glue to small portions, and then setting them in place.  Once the glue is dry, I do another segment.  This allows me to shape the coils so they fit in a specific area.

This particular cable was made in three pieces.  A short length was spliced around the thwart, and tucked under the floor board.  The rest of the assembly was made off the model.  After the main coil was formed, a short length was spliced to the anchor ring, and attached to the top of the main coil.

With the anchor flopping around at the end of the cable, this assembly was a bit unhandy to work with.  Consequently, I was forced to remove the #3 thwart.  This helped, but minimizing unwanted glue spots during installation still was a challenge for me.  The black paint job on the anchor also took a pretty good beating.

I decided to stow the anchor under the thwart.  I'm not sure how functional this would have been, but at least it keeps it out of the way while I work on the rest of the model.

Quite unexpectedly ended up in Hamburg maritime museum. Unfortunately I only had 45min to visit it, and the museum is big - 9 floors of maritime history! It was also full of great models, including Oliver Cromwell! I was really surprised to see it in the museum, considering a very boring history behind that ship.
The model is good, seems to be done in a fully framed manner, but 95% planked. There is a small opening in the bottom of the hull, which is barely visible.
Sorry for the poor photo quality, museum has a soft light which makes it cozy, but hard to make photos (especially on a phone)

Moving along, as I don't have enough of the Pontos barrels, I have to use Flyhawk ones, which require a bit more reduction of the North Start 12 pounder's barrels. Not hard, just tiny. Then adding the small pieces of photo etch to the side of the guns on some tape for stability. I will paint and add the flywheels off kit so they don't just blend in. .

The main guns fit nicely but the brackets for the trunions require sanding back so the top and bottom of the turrets sit flush.

Then there is some small pieces of etch that represent the turret rings, which require bending of the 1mm brackets upwards so they sit flush.

Finally the ladders for the front of the guns and the periscopes. The tops of the turrets are going to be painted separately as they are a darker shade of grey.

I have now painted them all, but in the process of adding washes and drybrushing to bring out detail. Once that is done I shall post again.
