reklein reacted to michael mott in Albertic by michael mott - FINISHED - Scale 1:100 - RESTORATION - Bassett-Lowke Model
Thank you to everyone for the likes and visits. While I enthusiastically replicated the small vent in my haste I forgot to consider the mounting on the ship.

Back to the workbench and a new one was machined up and again silver soldered together this time using a hollow vertical section.

After cleaning up and shaping the opening by squeezing it, I dipped it into some Tremclad Primer after spraying it out of a rattle can into a glass jam-jar.

As all of the vents were attached to the deck with screws soldered to the bottom of the stack I needed a way to re attach them without using heat which would destroy the paint.

This picture shows the broken screw, and a new small brass screw of the same diameter and a small bit of tube to act as a sleeve.

Next the head of the screw was made flush with the diameter making sure to keep the slot. The tube cauld slide up the threads but not over the head end which is important.

Next the new screw was threaded into the funnel  house with a small screwdriver .

This will enable the new vent and the old ones to be re attached with a drop of white paint as the glue and slid on the new screw.

reklein got a reaction from Saburo in Alaskan Yellow Cedar
Hi Guys, I have carved yellow Cedar for many years and it is wonderful to work with. I haven't had good luck turning it but that's about it. I'm also a little allergic to sanding dust from it, it raises little blisters on the sides of my fingers. Also one should wear a mask when sanding as it may make your nose run, same as red cedar. The other thing I've found is that it is sensitive to light and darkens somewhat when exposed to say, window light. I know this because some of my carvings that had been displayed in store windows had price stickers on them and the area covered by the stickers was lighter than the surrounding wood.
Other than that its great for machining etc. I haven't really tried to bend it. I have a pretty good stash of 4/4 x5" boards I need to use up and I think I'll use em for framing a 3/8 scale Nonsuch.    Bill

I wonder if the Vasa website may have some insight into the chemical makeup of historic paints. There certainly seems to be a variety of colors. Although its true she didn't have a sternwheel..

reklein reacted to Gaetan Bordeleau in 74-gun ship by Gaetan Bordeleau - 1:24
    Thank you for your comments.

Another part of the set up, one light is use only. the last model where I used exotic woods. Bocote was used for the planking, the color was superb, the smell was enchanting, the price was very high.

I remember few years ago when I first tried to use cherry wood, it was quite a challenge.
Today, when I see the results, I am very happy to have tried this road. Color is very hot. This wood has few faces. There is only one which should not be use especially for the planking as shown in one of the last post.

Since that 74 guns, I learned to use this cherry wood and now I only use this wood. We can say there in a simple way that there are 2 ways to represent a model ship : 1 color monochromatic  or more than one. Both methods have their own charms. As many subjects, in model ship fabrication, there is no right or wrong, it is just a matter of personal preference.

reklein reacted to greyhawk in Scharnhorst by greyhawk - Hachette - 1:200 - parts work
Yeah, it's been mostly Amati with Hachette kits. They've started to branch out a bit lately. The Scharnhorst is by a group of former Amati designers.

    Scharnhorst issue 49...

... aka the one where things start to get tiny. Not only do we get to cover the front of the forward deck structure but we also start decorating the structure with 9 doors and 32 handrails in different sizes and orientations. This one requires a steady hand, focus and a calm mind.

We've also reached the 35% point, so let's have another look at the entire things so far.

I have seen this before and now I have bought one to see how it looks.
It is Ugears and they have a lot of items all ready.
I bought the tram but there are also a jeep, windmill, oldtimer car and a few other things.
It is from wood and it is a kit.
You don't need glue or nails.
And when it is finished it will work.
    I'm curious about it.

Almost done with deck. Forecastle, main and quarter deck done. Definitely turned out better than I expected. Planking near the bulkhead was a challenge as the taper was a bit difficult to gauge...ended up eyeballing/sanding a lot.

Off to Japan now for 2.5 weeks. Hope I have a job when I return!  Until then, the poop deck will be sitting first on the shipyard TODO list. ⛵️😌
