Just stumbled across this build log. I would like to do a cross section as well some day. I'm pulling up a chair to follow along. -
I like the rat lines. It's a good reminder to keep an eye on spacing / scale. Rework is all part of the game. You're doing an amazing job.

Doug, Who's make of paint are you using and what are you using to thin it with?

I finished the deck. It was very repetitive and tedious. I also decided to try my luck at adding the scuppers to the bulwarks. I've scaled them off the drawing and used a small file to cut them in. Luckily the width of the file matches the scupper size, I just had to mark the depth and file down to the line. I'm hoping they will line up with the false frame timbers. Now on to more repetitive and tedious work one scupper and false frame timber at a time.

Well it's been a couple of weeks since my last post. I haven't been able to spend much time in the shipyard, we have been enjoying our backyard, spending time meeting and hanging out with neighbours and the usual summer chores. The quarter deck planking is almost done, perhaps one or two more planks per side for completion. I'm hoping there isn't much on the calendar this weekend so I can finish the planking and start the upper bulwarks. Will post progress pics soon.

I was just catching up on this build log and noticed your post about the broken keel. I appreciate you dedicating it to me. It looks like an easy fix though. I'll be sure to pay better attention to mine especially when I have to put pressure on it like sanding.

Looks like it would have been a very interesting lecture. It will be great if she could contribute to the Journal, I would love to read more about this.

Here are the latest pics of my Bluenose build. In the second pic you can see some wood filler I've added to try to fill in some gaps. I'm not too happy how the boards line up at the aft end but I think most of it will be hidden by the rails.

Thanks Ian. I've been working on planking the quarter deck. It's a long but straight forward process. Again, my time available has been limited but I manage to make slow progress. I've starting the nibbing on the quarter deck which doesn't seem as straight forward as the foredeck. I'll post pictures in the very near future.

I finally finished the planking of the fore deck. The nibbing could have been done better but as I went along I discovered better ways of doing it and improved on my methods. Another example of practice makes perfect you a little better. I started planking the quarterdeck. I thought the nibbing (if that's what it's called) on the two outer planks turned out quite well.

Actually Steve your build sucks. I saw a couple of planks not perfectly aligned. Seriously you can do better than this. I'm disappointed.

I know I haven't been posting much lately but there really isn't much to add to the build. I try to spend at least an hour a night but find it hard to spend most nights in my workroom. However I am still moving forward and making progress. Here is the latest. This boat is labour intensive but very satisfying. The nibbing, I thought, was going well but the pictures don't seem to agree. Pictures show way too much detail. I almost have the foredeck finished then will start on the aft. I have been trying to sand as I go which I think is a good idea. I also have been using a scraper to remove glue residue which helps. I have changed glues and am now using Weldbond which seems good. The best thing about Weldbond is that it dries clear. I liked Lepages Carpenters Glue but it always left a yellow residue. I'm enjoying my time in the shop and have been enjoying this build albeit as much as I can spend on it. One last note I want to mention is that I have fully converted over to scalpels. They are so much nicer to work with over hobby knives. Swann Morton is a really great product.

Steve, they were printed on a laser printer. I used Avery #5667 labels which are meant for a laser printer.

Sorry for taking so long but I did a small experiment and the results aren't too promising. Have a look at what I've achieved. I did 4 tests 1. I just put the label on bare wood. 2. I put the label on bare wood then added a coat of polyurethane 3. I put the label on top of a coat of polyurethane. 4. I put the label on top of a coat of polyurethane, then put a coat of polyurethane on top of the label. From what I've been seeing is that the polyurethane makes the label shine. The plain label has the best results but I know you want to add some type of finish. I have to admit that the poly is still wet. If tomorrow I see different results I will certainly post them.

Continuing planking the deck and started with the nibbing. Once I had a close look at it, it turns out that's it's not that difficult. It's just hard getting clean precise cuts. And of course it's a slow process but I'm progressing non the less.

Hi Frozen Rabbit, my mother's side of the family hails from Conception Bay. A small town around there. I bought that model about 15 years ago, ironically after I got back from a trip to NFLD. I found it way out of my skill level and it ended up in the garbage about 10 years later. I then found this site and realized that it was better to start small and go big. Good luck with the build and I wish you success. Please start a build log so we can all fall along. It would also be nice if you could tell us your name. We are on a first name basis here. I started planking the fore deck. So far so good but I have to figure out nibbing. I'm not sure I understand how to measure and cut the planks. Tips would be nice. One thing that I really enjoy is reading the drawings. I'm using a Lauck Street practicum but I follow along with the actual drawings. It's fun to find the information on the drawings. I find that the practicum takes shortcuts only because it's designed for beginners however I want to step up a bit. I want to add a bit more detail than the practicum. The practicum has a good build sequence (so far).

Reading your build log and mmmm'boy I can't wait to carry on. Looks like there are a few challenges ahead. Seems you have overcome those though and things are looking great. I hope I have the same success.
