It's been quite a while since I've worked on this build. I just realized that some steps were missed. I have started to get back into this build. There are a couple of reasons why I stopped. The biggest thing was that my personal life changed slightly. I still have the same admiral and kids but we ended up with two dogs, unexpectedly. They consumed a lot of my time when I wasn't at work. Second thing was boredom. I had reworked the Bluenose a couple of times doing mindless repetitive work that I ended up getting bored from it. And couple that to the fact that I made a huge mistake on this build I wasn't sure I could work around. I am following a practicum and missed an important step. Instead of trimming a large piece of wood before gluing I just glued it as a full chunk. I then realized I had a huge amount of wood to remove. Wasn't sure how I was going to do it but I knew it would be a huge job. So I walked away for almost a year. But I'm back. I've added to my tool collection, started a new group build on this site and decided to dive in again. I'm also doing a non boat related build that I have no intention of posting about because, quite frankly, sometimes it gets a bit much when you spend a day in the shop and have to remember to take pictures as you go then spend an hour at night downloading the pictures and writing about them. I realize that it's important to share your work so others can learn or help you to improve and that's what this forum is all about. But I figured, heck, it's non boat related (and not Chinese either) build. So here is where I'm at.

OK Alan and Druxey. I'm curious what a draw plate is used for? Is it to simulate nails? Are there any other uses? And Druxey, what are parallel pliers?

Looking forward as well Chuck. Hopefully in a few days I'll get your shipment and start the build. I wanted to try complete scratch build but would rather use your kits. I tend to think that your laser machine is a little more accurate than my scalpel.

I put in an order for the Byrnes disc sander. They are closed for the holidays so definitely won't see anything until the new year. However, I see there is no unboxing or review videos on Youtube so I may do one. My 13 year old knows how to do this so may rely on him for direction.

I broke down and ordered Syren's laser cut kits. Maybe I'm not quite ready for scratch build yet. I like the idea of starting the ship off with accurate material. And the beauty of this is that you basically buy the parts kits as the build progresses, so your not out of pocket all at once, you pay as you go. And I trust Syren to give me quality products.

Hi, as you all likely know, I have proudly purchased Jim Byrnes table saw. I was considering his thickness planer. But without having a bandsaw or resaw I'm wondering what use I would have for it. I'm curious what other people use it for. Another curious question is what about his sander? I'm asking because I know he has amazing quality products and would like to stick to his machines if I could justify them. Any input would be helpful.

I recently bought the Kindle version of Lofting a Boat: A Step-By-Step Manual (The Adlard Coles Classic Boat Series). I seriously don't like reading books on electronic devices, I would rather have the paper copy. However, I'm curious what others would have to say about this book. Is it a useful resource? Is it good for model ship building? Did I waste my money?

Allen, I'm curious if the Fusion program would generate a file that could be used on a 3D printer? I know the local library has a 3D printer although I'm not sure if there is a cost to use it. It could come in handy for intricate parts.

Just to add a little reference to this, in Canada the saw and accessories are duty free. Also, Byrnes offered ground or expedited shipping. The ground shipping only takes around 5 days. Definitely not worth the extra $80 they quoted for expedited shipping. It was shipped yesterday and should arrive Monday. The worst part is the Admiral insists it goes under the tree until Christmas. Oh well, can't argue with her, seriously I really can't argue with her.

Hi Mark, Like you, I have a couple of unfinished builds but decided to take the plunge anyway. And, like you, I tend to drift in and out of model ships but I wanted to try my luck at scratch building and figured this would be a good start. I have to admit, for only $15 it's not a huge loss if I decide that I'm over my head or this is too advanced for me. For any build where I can get Chuck's build log and advise, I would have to say it's more than worth the money. I would love to buy Chuck's kits for this build but it wouldn't be a scratch build. I'm going to try to muddle through with the few tools I do have. I may have to tap out and place an order or two with Syren but for now I'll go it alone. Take the plunge. There is nothing (or at least very little) to lose.

When I built my first kit, the Mare Nostrum, it was an introduction kit. It told me to nail in the instructions, so I did. Since then, I have been working on a few more advanced kits and not one of them included nails. I would have to say that nailing is more for the first time builder. Don't get me wrong, in my opinion, the Mare Nostrum turned out great. But, keeping with true fashion, I don't believe nailing is proper. BTW, I see a lot of people saying they use CA glue, including Tite Bond. I don't like CA glue and if you search on this site you will see a lot of great clamping tips. I find that CA isn't as strong as a good wood glue.

Hi David, I'm just catching up on this build. Looks like it's coming along nicely. I never would have thought to fit up the masts this early in the build. Good idea. Mind if I pull up a chair?

So I was reviewing other build logs and a question came to mind. Probably a no brainer for most but for me, I'm curious. When you lay the pattern on your wood and cut the shape out, do you leave the line or cut the line out. For example, what side of the line do you cut to, the outer or the inner?

I bought the plans and started the build log. However, it may be a few weeks until I start this project. I just ordered a Byrnes saw and will be a while before I get it. Please be patient. I've always wanted to do a scratch build and it seems this is a good one for new scratch builders. Hopefully I'll get this on the go soon.

So another Derek has made the plunge. Today I purchased the saw with all the accessories. It's my Christmas gift, the admiral is happy because now she doesn't have to shop for me. Delivery cost to Canada is reasonable, $86 US for standard UPS or $165 US for expedited service. Considering the price of the saw, shipping is a small percentage of the total cost. I chose the standard method. I was told it would be 10 days to 2 weeks to ship. I'm sure the shipping will take a week or two. Hopefully it will be under the tree on Christmas day. I thought long and hard about purchasing the saw. A lot of the posts on this thread wondered if it would collect dust and i had the same thoughts. But I'm sure I can use it for a lot more than just ship modelling. For example, I have the plans for the Veritas Traditional Tool Chest which I bought several years ago. I think this saw would be perfect in helping me build the tool chest. Byrnes was very helpful with my order. They realized I made a mistake with the order then suggested I add to the order with the spare parts bag. For $8 it is a lot cheaper getting it now then trying to buy it later. I' m excited and can't wait for Christmas day.

Hi Allen, just reviewing your build. Everything is looking amazing but I doubt if you would get the prize for the fastest build 😀. I appreciate your will to get everything right. Congratulations on your perseverance and determination. Lets do coffee sometime, I would love to catch up.

Wow Alan, just caught up with your build. Meticulous is all I can say. Your making progress albeit slowly but your focusing on detail which is encouraging.
