Worldway got a reaction from popeye the sailor in HMS Victory by Steve 12345 - FINISHED - Mantua/Panart - 1/78
I agree Steve, my current build, the Bluenose will be painted but I have always been a fan of natural wood colours. I'm sure you have heard of intarsia. I made a wooden teddy bear for my son when he was born using different woods to achieve different colours on the bear. I love bringing out the natural wood tones. Wood should be appreciated and not hidden under layers of paint.

Very nice work. A lot of tedious detail and you say you would have added more!!! What do you do in your spare time.

Worldway got a reaction from Duanelaker in Bluenose by Worldway - Model Shipways - Scale 1:64
It's been a while since I updated my progress. I decided to try my luck at a bit of scratch building for the main rail. As usual, when I'm tasked with something new, I tend to over analyze for quite a while until I finally break out the tools. I bought a sheet of balsa wood and glued on the pattern using a glue stick. I cut the rail out using my scroll saw trying to stay as close to the line as I could.
There was a bit of sanding required but no big deal using the sanding options I had. I also set up my Dremel so i could use it like a drum sander to help make the task go faster.
I'll still have a lot of fitting to do and cutting to length.

Worldway got a reaction from AON in Storing and Sorting Wood Strips
I'm close to finishing my first build and although my sorted wood worked well, I found out later that my company uses a lot of paper (for the CAD machine). And lo and behold they have perfect 24" x 2" tubes that holds the roll of paper. So they gave me a bunch and I find this is perfect. I've since repurposed my first idea.

Worldway got a reaction from DelF in The Syren Rope Rocket is now in Stock
Hey Chuck, I laid up a nine strand rope last night following your videos. Because of my limitations I could only do about 3 feet. Amazing results for my first try. Really impressed with the Rocket. And I might add, and trust me there is no bias whatsoever, but if you put the Rocket against MS Rope Walk, it is night and day.

Worldway got a reaction from fnkershner in Bluenose by Worldway - Model Shipways - Scale 1:64
Tonight I cut in the hawse ports. Pretty easily done but had some minor damage which was easily repaired.
I initially cut the hole then used needle files to fine tune it.
One thing I've noticed is that the caprail is 1/16" x 7/16" for the most part but widens to 9/16" in areas where there the belaying pins are located.
The kit doesn't come with either size plank. I'm curious what others might have done at this stage or I'm open to any suggestions.

A little more fine tuning and I think I finally got it. I haven't attached anything permanently yet, just showing perspective.

Taking advice from Per, I began reworking the transom. I chiseled it until I achieved the proper proportion. I added a filler piece then finished it off with some wood fill. I think it's a good improvement.

Worldway got a reaction from Blighty in Bluenose by Worldway - Model Shipways - Scale 1:64
I finished the planking and wanted to add the Knightsheads and Hawse Timbers. The plans said you could build it "proper" or you could simply use a solid sheet. It calls for 1/8" thick sheet and, from measuring off the drawings, I saw that it had to be 1 7/8" long by approximately 3/8" high. I had nothing that came close to those dimensions. I did however have a block 3/8" x 3/8". I cut it to length and luckily enough it fit inside my miter box. So I used it to cut two boards 1/8" thick.
It actually worked out well. I then installed them using a 1/4" dowel (which is the size of the bowsprit) as a spacer.
Then, using my Dremel with a sanding disc I ground down the false frame timbers to match the top of the planks
Next step was to add the chafe block. I cut two pieces to length and installed them.
I have now started some of the painting. I masked off the quarter deck and painted the outer planks a buff colour (the drawings specify either gray or buff).
I'm trying to get up the nerve to airbrush the hull. I'm not sure what approach I will take yet. I have paints for the airbrush but may end up picking up some spray paint. I'll let you know in the near future.

And the planking continues and cutting in a crap load of scuppers. I temporarily installed the plank and laid out the scuppers which i then cut in. However, they weren't exactly in line with the false frame timbers. I think however though that this detail will be better appreciated looking at the exterior of the ship and don't think the error will be that obvious.
The plans called for using a 1/16" thick plank for the first row of planking. However, I found the plank stood proud of the edge of the hull. Once the glue has cured I will take my mini plane to it to reduce the thickness to match the rest of the hull.
On each side I cut the plank a little short. I used a piece of plank fitted on edge to fill in the gap. Once painted, you will never know.
This is the repair on the opposite side.
