Hi Dave Yes I know all that and thank you for your reply, if you have read my log I sand down, apply 1-2 coats of sanding sealer, sand down, apply 2-3 coats of satin varnish, sanding each coat with 320 the last sanding is with 420 grit, after each sanding I vac the planks before coating with the varnish. The only problem with acrylic paint you have to wait for the paint to dry, it all so can be a bit messy. That is why I use the Zig hard felt tipped marker pens, very easy to use, drys in seconds. I have to say this I DON'T know what they are like if you use a water base varnish as I use a oil or like some people say a solvent base varnish. Denis.

Hi Dave Like I said it is what you are happy with. With this kit not only are the widths of the planks different sizes the thickness are different also. So you will have to sand them. Even if they are all the same thickness don't you sand them anyway ??. Denis

Hi John I did my planking one at a time but it is very quick. The ink don't seep into the wood like you think it would do, only a little on the end grain of the plank. I find the Zig felt pen a lot better than pencil, you get them from an art shop, they cost about $5.99nz. I have used 4 of them so far. But it is up to you. Denis

Hi John If you are going to use a pencil I would go for a 6B or higher like a 9B depending how dark you wish to have the caulking lines. The only thing with using a pencil is when you sand the planks down some times the pencil will rub into the plank making them look grey. If you use a pencil some times you can make the edges of the plank uneven by pressing on the edge. That is why I use a Zig felt tipped marker pen, it is quick and because it has a felt tip it will not damage the edge of the plank. Denis

Hi Edwin Thank you, nice to see you back on my log. The windows are now fitted in place. The liquid glass was put on the back, but as the openings are that small you cannot see it. Will send you an email soon, been busy looking for a house but no luck so far. Denis.

Hi John Are you caulking your plank edges with ink or pencil or not at all ??. When you do glue the planks on do one from start to finish ( don't leave a gap ) and make sure that the width of each strip is the same width then start the next strip and so on and so on. You will have to plank over the mast holes etc, make sure you put a pencil mark were they are so you know were to start to cut them out when glue has dried. Denis.

Hello Frank The Casey's Brass Black is the best on the market. It is very fast to blacken the brass. Best to clean the photo-etch first. Then wash the photo-etch, dry it then apply the brass black, wash again, dry off then another coat of brass black. Thank you for your words and likes. Denis.

Hi all I have dry fitted the windows into the stern frame. The frame has only got one coat of sanding sealer on it. I will have to put 3 coats of satin varnish on. The right side window don't fit that well, I hope that when the three coats of varnish goes on, as I will varnish the inside of the window frame it will build the inside up so the window will fit a bit better. Hi I know I am doing things out of order but they say a change is good as a rest ha-ha. So I decided to paint the stern windows. I have left the windows on the photo etch sheet so I have something to hold onto. Last night I washed the windows first and dried them off. Next was apply a coat of Casey's Brass Black to the inside, wash down in clean water and dry them off, then another coat of Brass Black. The black will make it look like the old lead windows. Today I have put 3 coats of white paint on, but it still wants another coat. When it is all done I will turn them over and put some liquid glass on the back. Denis

I am learning all the time of what not to do and what to do, we all learn of each other that is what is so good about MSW . Hi all Just dry fitting decks 43, 44 and 45 just to make sure they fit Ok. Not a lot of work was needed. I did put the masts in to make sure they lined up Ok. I have also pointed out my boo-boo on the forecastle deck, this will be fixed later. Denis.

Hi Mark When I ordered mine from my model shop I called them mast collar's , I was told that they are not mast collar's but mast heels and I was not going to argue with him. Like you I will call them round things :D . May be some one can help us out with the correct name for them ???. Denis.
