  2. Very impressive sjors!! After doing this, would you do it again? Sam
  3. I guess I'll do anything to put off the serious rigging of the ship. Its going to be great, you worked out all the other intricacies like the port lids and carriage rigging. Dont Fear the Rigging, Rich. (apologies to B.O.C.) Sam
  4. Russ, So nice to see you getting some build time in. Those small parts sure look good. Sam
  5. I am taking notes also as I will be starting my masting soon. ( I hope) Sam
  6. JP, Looks good, the "Glacial Progress" (to steal a term from the HipExec SGram) is frustrating but the extra time spent will pay off in the long run. As far as mahogany is concerned, I agree, it's just not suited to this kind of work; if its not splitting then that open grain is just screaming at you, "Look at me, I am SO out of scale!" We will both know for the next build. Sam
  7. Rich, The coppering looks great to my eye! Your experiences with the Enterprise are showing up here, your applying Lessons Learned. Me likey! Your a more talented or more patient man than myself, there is no way I could work while Better Half watched TV in the same room, I cant even have a conversation with her when I am working! Sam
  8. Enjoy your trip, Will there be fishin' involved?? Vacation just isnt vacation without tight lines and fish tails. Sam

  11. Slog, That soda can gives a great idea oh how big she is going to be. Where does everybody find room to display such big builds? Sam
  12. Rich, have fun, but, its going to be HOT. Too bad your not coming out in December, the Lady washington and the Hawaiian Chieftain will be in LA, the cruises are always entertaining and informative. Sam
  13. rich, carriages just seem to go on and on and on dont they? You commented about blackening something in your last post, but I am unclear what? What you have look good thugh. Sam
  14. Why not file two of the new ones to shape, then the color will match and they will age together? Sam
  15. Sjors, eclat' du cuivre?? Sounds like this product? http://www.faultless.com/kk_1.php Although that's a powder and leaves a residue if you dont rinse well. Sam
  16. Thanks everybody, I had a feeling that was the way......except, as Jason pointed out, when it ist. Sam
  17. I am in the process of making the hooks for my gun carriage rigging. Now that i am about 25% done forming them I suddenly started thinking (a dangerous thing thinking) Should the point of the hook be perpendicular to the eye or parallel? My thought is that with the point of the hook at right angles to the eye the block will lay straighter. Will it effect my rigging at all? Am I over thinking this? Looking at this link it appears they want to be perpendicular: http://www.history.navy.mil/library/online/consitutiongundeck.htm Thanks for any advice, Sam Perpendicular Parallel
  18. It's good for you to have two builds. It seems to work for you. Shampoo for copper??? Sam
  19. Sjors, I love the look of patina copper also. Years back I helped a friend make a bunch of copper lamps and lanterns. Some we used chemical patina, others were allowed to patina naturally. One thing I learned, fingerprints show up when you least expect them and in the most difficult place to remove. It might be an idea to give her a good cleaning when your done and try not to touch the copper with your bare hands after. Just a thought. Sam
  20. Looking good Rich! Happy anniversary. I am curious about one thing, do you think the CA will hold up over time on the hammocks? Thinking "out loud" here is all. Sam
  21. WOW! It has that "You have to touch it" look of a piece of a fine hand rubbed finish, very nice. Enjoy your travels, and, There is ALWAYS time for fishing! the wife-unit will understand trust me..... Sam PS. Did I make myself clear earlier? WOW.
  22. Rich, Judging by the picture that stuff looks pretty thick, Do you have o back it up with anything while it dries? I see in the picture you have toothpicks underneath while its still wet. Sam
  23. Sjors, That looks great! Will you put a clear coat on it or let it patina? Sam
