I guess I'll do anything to put off the serious rigging of the ship. Its going to be great, you worked out all the other intricacies like the port lids and carriage rigging. Dont Fear the Rigging, Rich. (apologies to B.O.C.) Sam

JP, Looks good, the "Glacial Progress" (to steal a term from the HipExec SGram) is frustrating but the extra time spent will pay off in the long run. As far as mahogany is concerned, I agree, it's just not suited to this kind of work; if its not splitting then that open grain is just screaming at you, "Look at me, I am SO out of scale!" We will both know for the next build. Sam

Rich, The coppering looks great to my eye! Your experiences with the Enterprise are showing up here, your applying Lessons Learned. Me likey! Your a more talented or more patient man than myself, there is no way I could work while Better Half watched TV in the same room, I cant even have a conversation with her when I am working! Sam

I am in the process of making the hooks for my gun carriage rigging. Now that i am about 25% done forming them I suddenly started thinking (a dangerous thing thinking) Should the point of the hook be perpendicular to the eye or parallel? My thought is that with the point of the hook at right angles to the eye the block will lay straighter. Will it effect my rigging at all? Am I over thinking this? Looking at this link it appears they want to be perpendicular: http://www.history.navy.mil/library/online/consitutiongundeck.htm Thanks for any advice, Sam Perpendicular Parallel

Sjors, I love the look of patina copper also. Years back I helped a friend make a bunch of copper lamps and lanterns. Some we used chemical patina, others were allowed to patina naturally. One thing I learned, fingerprints show up when you least expect them and in the most difficult place to remove. It might be an idea to give her a good cleaning when your done and try not to touch the copper with your bare hands after. Just a thought. Sam

Looking good Rich! Happy anniversary. I am curious about one thing, do you think the CA will hold up over time on the hammocks? Thinking "out loud" here is all. Sam

Rich, Judging by the picture that stuff looks pretty thick, Do you have o back it up with anything while it dries? I see in the picture you have toothpicks underneath while its still wet. Sam

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
