Nice job on the cigars and their cases, Dan. It seems you finally get a challenge on the boats, although that seems to be a piece of cake to you as well ...

I know it is easy to comment from my chair, Frank, but often at the scale you are working, one needs to exagerate the characteristics or distinct features of the subject. In your case you would do well to feature the eagle's beak. If you make the hook more distinct you got the bird. Still a very worth while effort I would be hard pressed to equal!
Cheers

Given the ship on 1944 would not have been that beaten up prior to removing the catapaults, I have lightly weathered the hull (port side so far), and added some scuppers. Green, black and light grey overspray on the lower hull for a little grunge, then AK's streaking grime, crusted rust, slime, rust streaks and salt. It's come up ok so far. Once this is done I can work on the deck.

Very nice work on the eagle. You have done a great job working it into the scale of the model. Well done.

Finished the sanding the hull. Created templates for both the top of the deck and the top rail using the thick vinyl backing I salvaged from the old Samsung TV. That material sure comes in handy.
Throughout this build I have been making lots of templates by xeroxing items from the plans and glueing them on the vinyl.

Part 36 – Eagle Figurehead
Kathryn has a small carving of an eagle as its figurehead, as in the following photo:
The carving is a little ‘cartoonish’, and to my eye doesn’t look much like an eagle.
So, even though I’m trying to replicate Kathryn as close to the real boat as possible, I couldn’t bring myself to copy her figurehead (and I’m not sure I even could at this scale). So I decided to make the figurehead as realistic as possible.
Carving the figurehead at this scale is quite a challenge, so I decided to model it in Sculpy – still a challenge but more within my capabilities.
A piece of 20-gauge copper wire was used as an armature, and the end of the wire was shaped and carved for the hook of the beak.
The wood is a piece that replicates the end of the cutwater – this let me sculpt the base of the figurehead to the correct size.
I didn’t take photos of the sculpting process. It consisted of first baking a very small piece of sculpy that was formed around the base of the wire. This gave a base for the rest of the sculpting. I used some very small clay modeling tools and a hobby knife to do the sculpting.
The figurehead was painted with spray primer to ensure the acrylic paint would adhere to the copper beak, and then was painted with gold model paint.
The following photos show the figurehead temporarily in place on the model.
The figurehead was a welcome break from my current work – which hopefully will be introduced in the next post.
For those of you who live in the area affected by Hurricane Harvey, I hope you and your loved ones are safe and dry. Watching the videos of the storm make me feel like our occasional dust storms are nothing we should complain about.
Be well, everyone!

Apart from painting the rails the Torpedoes and their Turrets are finished.
The torpedoes are rolled as a solid tube so the ends can be rounded. To make it easier to sand the round end I used a French Curve to cut the warhead end :
The tail ends are a cone. I bought a Forming Tool from RP Toolz which did the job very well :
I dipped the warhead ends in CA to stiffen the paper, and then filled and sanded them to shape :
Although they can't be seen I fitted the fins to the torpedoes. This made them easier to slide into the tubes :
The Air Pipes are made from 0.5mm tubing and 0.3mm wire :
The finished Turrets ready for final painting. The Swivel Mounts were made in similar fashion to those on the Gun Turrets :

Me too! I hope I can salvage mine as well one of these days. My uncle had a half-finished model plane hanging in his house for years that got put on hold when he got married and had kids. Recently, his son was old enough that they rediscovered planes together and he finally finished it. Maybe if I have kids some day, I can do the same with my Ratt.

a possible additional reason for the central sheeting of the mainsail is that with such a huge & powerful sail, the third restraint would reduce the load on each by spreading the same load between three points instead of two. Maybe you can also control the sail more easily as well.

Hi to all!
The work is slow, but, nevertheless, it is going
A few days ago I was compelled to make building berth. This time the rigging turns out to be more complicated than I did before.

Nice build Jim. Pity it's a Part-work, if someone made the full kit I think it would be a good seller. Lots of luck with issue #119, you've done really well getting all the rest .
