  1. a super fleet Patrick, so much to study from all angles and distances... Nils
  2. good looking rigging of the rudder-tiller Steve, to lead the steering chain over blocks in order to halften the chain pull forces is a good idea Nils
  3. very nice looking pilot house Bob, even the drainpipes are put on,.... lovely Nils
  4. Thanks very much Zeh, for your input on this, and for looking in, a good analysis of yours, yes it makes sense, that the machine is a kind of "multi purpose winch", in combination with appropriate rollers, blocks, etc, for leading the lines into the required directions. Unfortunately impossible to get a detailed plan of the eyebolts Nils
  5. thank you for your thoughts, suggestions, etc... Gerhard, Mark, Piet and Greg Gerhard, mark is right, those half rounds are vents in bird`s view Mark, to date I also have no theory what those narrow winches are for. The wind drums are orientated to pull in longside deck direction Piet, at the end of the port / Stb lifeboat rows there is on each side a stack of three collapsable lifeboats (stapled). Thought that perhaps these boats would have been pulled / slid over the boatsdeck by means of a winch, into a position where there was just an empty place under the davits, that had already lowered their actual boat. But there are too many deck components and vents in the way, so that would`nt work either Greg, not a bad idea Greg, but around 1900 I do`nt think that the shipowners had the wellfare of "disabled" in their mind yet. Also as Mark mentioned there are no booms, no pulleys, etc. installed Perhaps some day by coinsidence someone may come across the solution to that question... Nils
  6. Many thanks Gerhard and Steve,... Gerhard, unfortunately I have no other pics of these other winches on the boats deck, I`m adding an outcut of the appropriate boatsdeck`s length, but also there is no hint for the possible ussage.... Steve, I also thought of that explaination Steve, but in an emergency case there would have to be several boats swung out and and lowered simultaneously and each single boat having fore and aft line, and what in case of lack of steam (explosion in Boiler rooms or so) Nils click on to enlarge !
  7. Update the winches are coming together quite well. Have meantime made out another two slightly different (narrower) looking winches on the boats deck, of which I unfortunately do`nt know the function....and there are only two of them on the entire boatsdeck The status of the 6 cargo winches.... Nils this pic is borrowed from the St. Petersberger "Qvartett KWdG" Perhaps they have some relation in order to hoist the lifeboat lines or so..... Does anybody know ?
  8. Hi Bob, when the time comes for fitting out Pequot`s deck......, they have some cast winches in scale 1:96 here...., http://www.westbourne-model.co.uk/ModelBoat/John-R-Haynes-Fittings-General-Merchant.html that do`nt look bad, unless you prefer self made ones Nils
  9. Hi Jan, never seen that way of ash-removal, but why not, it looks very interesting and functional Nils
  10. Bob, small production line is right, there are only 5 winches (plus prototype) , but one machine comprises 36 individual parts. Will you have steam winches on the "Pequot" also ? Nils
  11. Hi Ed, I love that beautiful lapstrake planked cutter, what a sight !! Also the tip to solder a small brass plate to the pin and then glueing it to the dowel, thanks for sharing this (more glue area to hold) Nils
  12. thanks very much Piet, once the prototype is made, the learning curve sets in and the remaining 5 winches ca`nt go wrong any more. One needs to be mirrored. Nils The horizontal holes for the 3 axis are drilled by means of a template, taken from the prototype The upper side contours still to be filed into shape. For the large gear wheel it requires a little freecut in the front side. I`m so happy that it worked out like it was intended
  13. Hi Gerhard, nice detail work, it seems you are not anxious to do a large variety of soldering parts together. Do you preferably use a das torch or the electric soldering iron ? Nils
  14. Lee, nice to see you posting again, I was missing news on your lovely cutter, it`s so a beautiful ship Nils
  15. Thank you very much Steve, John and Patrick, for your appreciations.... Steve, yes now that I know it can be done, it`s a bit more relaxing to do the other 5 winches John, Thanks, I`m glad you like it Patrick, Thanks, I`m satisfied myself with the result, glad you like it too Nils
  16. Jcoby, very nice ship, beautiful made hull planking, deckplanking and bulwarks Nils
  17. Update Prototyp winch is now complete (requires a few paint touch ups) Two of these winches go on the forecastle deck and one on the forward waist deck, behind the foremast Two reciprocating steam drives mounted, also outer winding drums and brake. The framework was chemically blackend. 2 of these winches go on the forecastle deck and one on the forward waist deck, behind the foremast Nils
  18. congratulations Pete, that sight on the water is beautiful, a good feeling for the proud owner I believe..... NIls
  19. very nice work Paul, one can see that you have fun in doing that wonderful wood-work... Nils
  20. amazing work Clare, it`s card, but looks like a very well built wooden model, a beautiful ship, and respect, all in 1:96 !! Nils
