  1. Many thanks, I will give it a try as I am about to start planking😀
  2. Are you sure these are pictures of your model and not the real ship? 😉 Fantastic work!!
  3. Hello John, Welcome to the Cutty Sark club and thanks for posting your progress. I will be following with great interest. It seems a good idea to first paint the hull with copper paint, but I wonder if it makes the gluing more troublesome. Personally I think I will go for "Muntz" plating and therefore I intend to apply a brass paint coat to the plating once finished (I am not there yet as still fairing the hull 😉).
  4. I am presently working on Cutty Sark, but Harvey and Blue Nose are awaiting/being renovated. I have received a just started President, so I should count it. 😉
  5. Hi Simon, Get well soon and I hope you will fully recover. Mantua sells the plans of Thermopylae on scale 1/124. I am not sure whether I would recommend it to you view my experience with Cutty Sark model (well aware it is a 35 years old one)
  6. You have done a very nice job. Thanks for sharing your project.
  7. Hello Richard, I am very much looking forward to follow your workshop, especially as you will cover Cutty Sark as this is my current build. As I am mainly a Linux user, I wonder if you know any equivalent to Rhino in Linux and or open source. Worse come to worse, I can always use my wife's laptop as she is a Windows user. 😉
  8. Welcome to the Cutty Sark club!
  9. Hello Barry, Welcome to the Cutty Sark club, wishing you a lot of fun! I still have an old kit and there are four brass sheets, so not sure which you mean. 2 concern the bulwarks, but I am not happy with them so I will construct the bulwarks myself. The other are mainly about the deckhouses and I prefer to have them in teak. So a lot of kit-bashing ahead and not of much help to you 😉. I hope I will be able to help you with other questions in the near future.
  10. I have also prepared some moulds to make sure the hull has its correct dimensions. The thick line represents the thickness of the planking. So I can use the moulds both before and after planking: just printing and cutting on each side of the lines. 🙂
  11. The jig I build for mounting the frames can be used in different ways: the hull can be moved forward or aft, but can also be inclined by 45° or 90°. So there is an easy access to the different sides of the hull and still be fixed it its position.
  12. I am now fairing and squaring the frames. It takes a lot of time but the final look of the hull will depend on it.
  13. But anyway, your Top is a beautifully crafted one!
  14. Here is a picture with all the different parts of the "Top". There is a Fore Top, Main Top and Mizzen Top
  15. For people not so familiar with all nautical terms https://www.oxfordhandbooks.com/view/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199336005.001.0001/oxfordhb-9780199336005-e-48
  16. I found this glossary very handy as my mother-tongue is not English either: Illustrated Glossary of Ship and Boat Terms and you can find here https://www.oxfordhandbooks.com/view/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199336005.001.0001/oxfordhb-9780199336005-e-48 Hope it helps for you as it does for me 😉
  17. Hej Tim, Good to see you are back. I will be following your proceedings with utmost interest. 😉 All the best and good luck
  18. Frames are now fine tuned and checked for symmetry. They sit nicely on the keel.
  19. Yesterday I received a very nice pile of very nice planking strips. Thank you Vahur! See also my post in What did I receive today
  20. Nice bowsprit you have there and the pictures give a great impression!
  21. These rats look great and you did this in one evening? Great idea to make some plans ahead. The next step in my plan is lining up the bulkheads, after correcting the sawing of the bulkheads with small strips and sanding. I will update my build log after this step. Good luck!
  22. Nice to see somebody building the Harvey from AL. I have built mine some 30 years ago and remember having good fun on her. But moving 4 times in these 30+ years has taken its toll and she is definitely in for a big make over, but I have started in the meantime on the Cutty Sark and I am bashing the kit a lot, so no time to do 2 ships at the same time. The deck is looking great and hope you will have a lot of fun.
