At times the jumping spiders come and make their homes in the rigging of my ships, usually the Cutty Sark or the Brigantine, as they have the most complex rigging. Basically a pre-made, fully furnished spiderweb.

Take it in stride, Baker. You might as well be the real Matthew Baker as far as i am concerned. I noticed that early on in our discussions.

Check your chair for the missing yard. I went insane at one point when i lost the GH's sprtsail yard, and it was INSIDE the chair. Also, wouldn't the foremast braces fall to the aft of the forecastle?

Good times, being a fisherman. I sometimes go fishing with my dad in a small boat. We fish for trout. I remember my first time charter fishing, and it was incredible. And yes, gulls can get pretty brave. They wait in the morning just after you go out to sea, because they know when you will drop the fish guts in the water from last night. August 5, 2020, 4:00 A.M.

Guy accepted an offer for 95 bucks. Not quite a lowball for what i think i am getting, but for how much this kit sells, it sure is. As always, i will have to make considerable modifications to accommodate the rigging. It will be nice to deal with a kit without flash, though. Unlike Kirill, i will be making a "1607" galleon instead of an Armada era ship.

I still have no idea how to change the titles on these things. Probably the IMAI 1/100 Spanish Galleon. Kirill isn't gonna be happy when he sees me molest the same kit he built perfectly. Coming from you, especially, this is quite a high award. I will proudly wear it. I could not have completed this build to the standards i did without you. The advice and support given by all who stuck with me was immensely valuable, and i could not have done it without you. I found a nice deal on eBay for the Spanish Galleon, and it's coming from the states! That means less in shipping. Assuming the guy responds to my offer, it could even be on my doorstep by the end of the month. I should probably make the build log before i start, this time.

As per Baker's advice, i will be leaving the fighting top pennants off the ship. Case closed. As always, Baker saves the day!

As per many contemporary (or near-contemporary) depictions, (like this one, as well as those above) streamers or pennants were flown not only from the trucks of a ship, but also from the fore and main tops. Thus, i have a question that i need answered before the ship is done: Should i add pennants hanging off the fore and main tops?

I'm listening to Red Water, which, considering my history with mental issues, is a song i probably shouldn't be listening to, but who cares. I measured the flags, and they will easily fit on the trucks. I am not doing the tissue paper method because i don't really want to use my dad's dinosaur laptop (which he refuses to replace even though it barely works) any more than i have to, because that's the only computer in the house that connects to the wireless printer. So, i just went full send and printed the flags on regular paper. The tissue paper method, while i want to try it, can wait til next time. The one thing is, i will simply wrap the flags around the trucks instead of tying them with thread as i don't want to break the fragile pieces. One of the things Baker did right was to make the trucks bigger around, to prevent breakage. My hope is that the royal standard will cover up (and protect) a chronic breakage on the main truck.

Back to the flags. This is the screenie i took of the Google Doc with the flags, scaled as they are to be on the ship. The mizzen flag was inspired by this modern drawing of the Golden Hinde vs. the Spanish galleon Concepcion: The Golden Hinde is on the right, but you could probably already tell which ship was which by looking at who has a gigantic picture of Mary on her stern, and who doesn't. Anyway, the Golden Hinde has the flag on a stern flagpole, instead of on the mizzen truck. This flag is a decorative naval ensign composed of a bunch of stripes with a St George's Cross in the corner. I elected to do the same thing, but put the flag on the actual mizzen mast.

I promised you an anchor rant, and here it is. 🤬 You know how a ship usually has two or four anchors? You know how many anchors Revell decided to give me?? ONE. They decided "ya know what? You, Michael, don't deserve two anchors. Here's ONE." They thought i wasn't good enough for a full set of anchors. Yeah, laugh it up. I am ABSOLUTELY STEAMED. And this is how they wanted me to install it: Anyone remember this being the correct way to install an anchor? ANYONE?? Well, this is something i refused to bend on. I went to the model shop and spent 34 bucks on a set of these little things: I decided i didn't just want two anchors. I wanted all four. So, that is what i got. And this is the final result, which i am quite pleased with:

Now, it is time to discuss how and where flags were flown on English ships. This image shows an English carrack, probably the Mary Rose. While this vessel predates the Golden Hinde considerably, we can see the Tudor practice of flying a pennant or streamer from the main truck, as well as another flag. What surprises me is there is no flag on the mizzen. The next photo shows the English fireship attack during the Battle of Gravelines against the Spanish Armada. This reinforces the Tudor practice of flying pennants on the main. The final two images are also part of the Spanish Armada: The second image shows the English galleons surrounding the Spanish crescent formation in the channel. Both photos show many streamers flying from ships on both sides. All in all, i think the correct formula is a multicolored "decorative" flag on the mizzen, a streamer and royal ensign on the main, and a St George's Cross on the fore.

Tissue paper sounds good, but i already have a technique i like to use. I just use regular printer paper. I would like to use your technique, but i doubt tissue paper would survive my caveman motor skills, not to mention the glues i have. Plastic glue is, well, plastic glue, super glue would make the paper tough, unmanageable, and i would only have about 10 seconds to set the flags, and as for my wood glue, it's only applicator is a ruined brush that would simply destroy the delicate paper. I will try the tissue paper technique, and if it does not work, i will go back to what i know.

Yesterday, i finished up the braces on the yards. I tried the singeing technique and failed, so i went with plan B and ran the lines through wax to make them smoother. However, since the thread was so hairy, there was only so much i could do. Anyways, aside from that, the installation of the brace lines went fine. On a different note, i will not have to use any more blocks on this build. All that remains is printing and setting the flags, rigging the anchors, and painting the stand. That is the Golden Hinde nearing completion. If there are any suggestions about additions to the build, now would be the time to let loose. As the build wraps up, i need to know what more could be done before it goes on the shelf. That being said, i do not think there is much more to be done along the avenue of rigging, however, the paintwork could potentially use some last minute touching up.
