  1. Thank you B.E., Dubz, and Walace. Yes it is sad that our four legged mates come and go so quickly leaving a hole that is hard to fill. She was the best of a long line of shop mates! I've started the rigging of the royal yards and should have more progress soon. Also thanks all for stopping by and all the likes.
  2. Ok it's been a tough couple of weeks in the workshop. While working on the rigging for the topsail and topgallant yards the sleeve of my shirt caught the fore royal stay snapping the topgallant mast at the sheave. Soooooo the air was very blue for awhile and once it cleared and I could see straight I disassembled the topgallant mast again, made a new one and re-rigged it ..... again. Once that was done I was able to continue working on the rigging with short sleeved shirts! With the Main and Fore Topsail and Topgallant yards in place I've rigged the ties, buntlines, lifts, sheets, clue lines and braces. Next I'll move on to the Royal yards. Now for the second and more painful workshop tragedy. My shopmate for the last 11 1/2 years has gone on to the great workshop in the sky as is the issue with beloved pets who never seem to live long enough. She was my faithful companion every day for all those years always making moving around the shop a challenge. You see she was a 135lb (61kg) mastiff and she took up a whole lot of space though she thought she was a lap dog. Tallie last fall on her 11th birthday. And where you would more commonly find her. She didn't mind me stepping around her at all! A gentle giant who will be greatly missed.
  3. Great workmanship Ken. If any of the monofilament should show a very tiny drop of yellow ochre paint hides them well.
  4. Thanks B.E. very much appreciated. Slow going but I'm getting there. Thanks for all the likes too!
  5. The rigging continues. As I said above it seems like two steps forward one step back. I've now added the leech lines, buntlines and the falls for the bunt lines to the lower course yards. Then I moved on to the topsail yards. I added the parrel, jeers, buntlines, lifts, sheets and clue lines to both the fore and main yards. Fore Yards Main Yards
  6. Hi Dave! The wonderful memories of the group build and the great design of the Syren is some of the reasons that she is still one of my favorite builds. That's the reason I'm spending all the time and effort re-doing her. As far as improved skills I'm not to sure, I'm still crossing lines, undoing them and rerunning them only to find I pulled them through the wrong block and rerunning them again and belaying them to the wrong point.........and on and on........! At least this time Syren rope and blocks were used then replacements were needed! A great improvement over what was available at the time! Thanks for stopping by and also thanks for all the likes!
  7. Hi Sea Hoss, The saddest part is I have a case frame done. All I need is to get the plexi and it's finished! You want to believe that the case will be finished before the rigging is done this time!
  8. Well it's been a year since I was distracted by Syrens Royal Barge and the Medway Longboat but I'm back at restoring the rigging to the Syren. That is until I squirrel an get sidetracked by something else. I took a couple of days and reread the practicum and looked the plans over to refresh myself and figure out exactly where I had left off. I completed redoing the Topsail and Topgallant yards. That completes the redoing all of the yards. Now it's time to start putting the yards back on the model. I started with the main and fore lower course yards. The trusses were made as well as rigging the slings and lower jeer ties and tackles. Then I ran the lifts and running tackles doing my best to keep the yards level. Lots and lots to still do but happily we're underway again!
  9. Bob, Off to a good start. Even though she's not a large complex model she will test us. Hopefully you'll get to stop by Chuck's on a Saturday work shop day. It's a lot of fun. Keep me posted if you do and I'll try to pop down and see you there.
  10. Thanks Steve, I'm glad the log was of value to you. I look forward to following your progress. As far as future projects I'll start work again on redoing the masting and rigging on my scratch built Syren again. After that who knows! Hi Ryland. Right now I'm sad to say that I probably won't make it to New London in April. Keep up the good work on your Medway! Joe, John, Jeff, Grant, B.E., gerty, Bob and Chris thank you all for the kind words! It's very much appreciated. Joe L. Thanks for the support and kindness. It is slow and steady for me and I'm very fortunate to have a lot of shop time at various stages of the winter. It's not unusual for me to have 2-3 hours a night and several more hours on the weekends to spend on modeling. Plus the guidance and inspiration from all of you here at MSW really helps too! Thanks to everyone else who stopped by and hit the like button!
  11. Well I've reached that happy sad day. The Medway Longboat is now complete. I must say this is a very fun, interesting and high quality kit. I had a great time building it and I hope all of you had as much following along.
  12. I obtained one of Syren's stands for the longboat. While I'm still finishing the rigging I've also completed the stand and six of the oars. I painted the oars red as they were on the contemporary model.
  13. Thanks Chuck, I had a ball and you're welcome anytime! Thanks for the kind words John and Steve and all the likes too!
  14. That's great to hear! You'll love it. Thanks for the kind word but I wish I was able to follow you. Thanks Ken. It was a pleasure seeing you and everyone else. Going to Chucks shop was like making a trip to the holy lands. Well I've been whacking away and need to post a lot to catch up. The rigging is mainly completed. There's a lot of line hanging all over the place though. I need to go back and adjust all the line tension and make the rope coils. I've also started to make the oars. Here you can see the start of the tapering to thin the blade down. Still a long way to go. The three stages. Stock untouched, handle attached and sanded and shaped. Finished oars ready to paint, And the first four with their first coat of paint. Whew that was a long one. Thanks for stopping by and all the support!
