Thank you very much for that link, Wefalck - it looks very helpful. I actually ordered that book from a German dealer through Abebooks, but it never arrived. That's the second book I've ordered from a German book seller and the second non arrival, so I think I'll stop trying to source books from Germany! I've only drawn up basic lines and frame shapes which I based on the lines plan of the ship 'Pearl' in the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich, which is a very full bodied ship of the same period. The dimensions needed just a little tweaking on the computer to match them to 'Meteor's', but I think they'll serve OK. This is a shipping period right out of my comfort zone, so any assistance with appropriate photos - especially of rigging detail - would be extremely helpful and very much appreciate. This will, I fear, be a very slow moving project. I have a lot on at the moment plus the changes at the museum aren't helping much. We also currently have massive industrial problems on our railways, so I'm not sure when I'll next be able to get to the museum. Can you believe train driver actually calling a strike in this day and age? Haven't they heard of negotiation? John

Looking first class, Mark. Couldn't you just have measured 'Cherub's' bowsprit and used that for the model? John

Kevin - just a temporary home, Kevin; but probably for many months to come. Russ - It's a good spot, but we miss our view and natural light at the other spot. John

Lots of people stopping to talk, Pat. The lighting on the desk is like a beacon at the end of a relatively dark gallery and people come over just out of curiosity to see what it is. John

It's good to see that you've had some time to work on her, Russ. John

Not so much an update, as a reason for there being no updates! The museum is about to undergo major renovations to the front of the building and the area where our model making desk used to sit is about to become a new lift (elevator for our American members). We have therefore been moved to a temporary location downstairs for the duration and my last visits to the museum have been concerned with the move - both talking to people about what's going on and actually moving models. We don't have our new storage cupboard as yet - that's supposed to be fitted on Monday - so probably my next visit will be taken up with moving some of our junk from the old storage cupboard to the new. This is our old location. The desk has gone but some of the models under construction are still in the display cabinet. Our new location already sporting a desk and a display cabinet that the curators have emptied out so we can store our models. George the electrician has installed some very good lights for us now that we don't have any natural light.

Very nice, Danny. It must be a bit of a temptation to just give one more pull on some of those lines! John

Take a trip on your real boat? You'd have to hack a hole in the ice first, wouldn't you? John

Catching up after a week away, Popeye. She proceeds at about your normal building pace! John

Nicely done, mate! I only have the small saw and thickness sander for model work. Each have a tube fitted and I just plug the vacuum into whichever one I'm using at the time. John

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
