The fundamental question is always, whether you go for an 'artisanal' look, or a 'realistic' one. In the former case you would have all artisanal freedom you like and can choose what pleases you aesthetically. In the latter case, you would need to try to confirm through research what might have been used on the prototype.

I am inclined to think that white-wash was quite prevalent on lower decks, because it makes the cramped space look more airy and reflects the little available light better (as already mentioned above). In addition, it has some bactericide and fungicide effects due to its high pH-value (which was not know scientifically, of course, at the time, but practical experience showed that less nasty, smelly things were growing in nooks and corners).

I've found that those rejects can always be turned down...and down...and...behold! A belaying pin. Good looking cannon, though.

Mark Ah I see you are adept at adding material to your scrap box just like I am. It is amazing how these bits get used up over time.

    Hi everyone,

Another day, another cannon. Here are the 32# and 18# together. Just the 9# long and 9# short still to go.
In the spirit of full disclosure, here are a few mistakes --I am sorry, experiments-- while figuring out how to turn these...

I've recently switched to Birchwood Casey Brass Black as I find it easier and more consistent than the Jax blackener. I also use 320 grit sandpaper on the brass (or before I form rings and other small items). Soak the piece in alcohol first (or vinegar) to degrease. The B.C. solution is applied with a small brush and only takes 10-15 seconds to work. Rinse in water then see if you want the piece darker. If so just repeat the above process.

I also do not solder my rings but do file the ends after forming the circle. This makes a neat joint. I can't imagine why you would need to solder the breeching rings unless your cannon was actually going to fire!

And I now use only silver soldering paste. It is self fluxing and flows beautifully, Check out  https://www.beaducation.com/pc/393-jewelry-making-tools-soldering-fusing-tools. Also, look at the videos on silver soldering and other jewelry work. they're terrific. And remember - you need a tight joint for silver solder to flow.

The portholes commenced in post #278 are almost done now, & in this case I'll show the technique. They are fabricated from brass washers & thin slices off a brass tube. The insides of the ports needed cleaning up, below shows finished & not finished:

The overall diameter is too large, below are the forward portholes which are smaller.  I marked the final size with pencil & scribed the circle of the final size.

Next the tender mercies of the handheld bandsaw.....& try to sand to the line.

    Then to the high-tech linisher:

Below there's 5 reduced in size, & one has also been linished.

    Close up

They looked like they needed something more, so I drilled shallow marks to replicate fixings. They have also been coated with one coat of Humbrol satin clear coat. The designer - Cliff Gale - apparently always had his portholes to a high polish, so out of respect for that I'll replicate that with the clear coat on the brass. That's why I was being fussy about the visible finish. The drilled marks look a bit crude, & I'm hoping that the effect will be better when they are mounted.

I'm not sure about the glass, but I recall in another post CD case plastic was suggested.

    thanks

it comes to oil coating, lots of elements have to be attached before putting coating.

    Hello dear friends,
I do appreciate your comments a lot and thank you very much for your support and kind words.

    Hello Rob,
you are right with effect of LED lighting; here are some current pics from great cabin illuminated only with LEDs inside. In my opinion, this looks more realistic and natural.

    Hello Piet,
I am pleased you like my work and also wish you and your family all the best in 2019. Have great time.

    Hello G.L.,
Thank you for your kind words. I have already done crew members according to portraits of real people on my previous ships and I would like to continue with this tradition also on Royal Katherine.
For example here is the crew on yacht Royal Caroline (card model from scratch) in a scale 1/40. On the last picture it´s me.😊

If you wish to be there, you can send me your photo through PM and I will try to imitate your face in one of the sailors. During next months I will start to make first crew members.
I will be pleased to have my friends from MSW on board.

    Best regards

You are welcome, Mark. It is not a problem to make tiny details and ornaments from this clay although in my opinion the photo etched parts will look better and more professional.

Some current pics from the great cabin - furniture is almost finished:

Now I will make accessories and new panel with weapons.

The final step in completing the decking for the magazine begins with framing the light room and filling room floors. I then used boxwood planking for the deck. I need to add some treenails and when that is complete, I'll start on the powder room walls and palleting.

    You are welcome, Richmond.

    Hello Mark,
I am pleased reading your words, thank you very much. I enjoy making realistic models of various things - sailing ships and sport cars are my favourite objects.

That is so nice, I am glad I can bring people pleasure and joy. Thank you for your kind words, Richard, they are much appreciated.

I've finished the chairs (also made an improvement with their design) and other accessories for the great cabin, they are still without paint  - I am going to paint them after finishing all pieces of furniture.

Well, the Czechoslovakian fellow who provided our cannons turns them out in about 2 minutes per (not including drilling the trunion holes and muzzle bores). Such is the beauty of CNC. But perhaps he has a commercial setup. I do think the look of a cast cannon gives a more realistic impression than smooth brass. Your workshop view is magnificent!

    Hi.
    Time for the updates.

A few planks laid. Not much to see but the fairing of the interior of the hull is good.

Yes the small gap is intentional.

One of the reasons I have not been working on the Mayflower very much is the new Shed/Man cave...  Well its finished.
Its a 8ft X 12ft Pent shed that has been Pressure treated then 4 coats of a good preserver. Insulation has 60mm Celotex then covered with 12mm red wood cladding.
Electrics is the only thing I have had done for me. LED lighting is very nice and bright. without costing a small fortune to run them.
