I have made the first hole in the hull, for the bow sprit. Now you can see her real lines for the first time.

    thanks Popeye and Sjors

yes lots of sanding and filler needed but no painting yet . there will be a second layer of planking with 7x0.6 strips
once I got the hull nice and smooth like it should be I intend to do the second planking without the need of filler and sanding should be limited to getting it nice and smooth for the paint

I have now finished the first layer of planks . hare a few pictures :

unfortunately I will be away the rest off the year so I will be putting away all tools and covering up the hull till I am back

not sure if I will have the opportunity to go online , so if not I wish you all happy holidays and see you in the new year

    Small update.....

Because of work not much time to do anything.
The shrouds with deadeyes and lanyards on the mizzen lower part are done.....
One side a few ratlines to see how it goes with the futtock stave.
On the port side just put the deadeyes on the tops but no picture of that.
I first want to finish the shrouds to the futtock stave before I make a picture of that .
    Be patient what concerns that.
A few pictures of how everything looks.

That looks really neat Jay, and I'm glad it works for you.

But knowing my klutziness, I'd probably be reaching for something on my bench and know the whole kaboodle on the floor. That, or sweep over the tops of them with my arm-breaking most of them and leaving dozens of nice scratches in my arm

    Thanks,

Great work and nice recovery Bob. It would quite an interesting exercise at some point down the road (long after we're all gone) to open up our ships and view the collective contents of our holds!

Great! job Tony.... the catharpins look good ,I think I'd leave well enough alone there, but change the deadeye on the mizzen, that is , if you feel like it.

Time for an update.  Not that I've achieved a major milestone but I need to take a break to handle some 'real life'.

Most of the planking above the wales has been completed P/S.  The gun ports on the gun and quarter decks are completed.  I've touched up the gun port red and done the first coarse sanding.

There are still about 4 rows of planks to finish up the main wale.  Then I'll be able to final sand and begin finishing on this section.  The sweep ports will be installed, the double planking on the wales put on and I need to decide what will be painted and what will be stained.  Treenailing is also on the docket.

Sounds like a plan ---- right into 2014!

    Stay well, mates.

Really terrific work on those windows Bob.  Now don't forget to label your display case 'Rattle OK' so you don't panic if you move her around the house 12 years down the road!!!!

Wonderful job on the stove John. There's a lot work gone into that, well done.

Looking at earlier posts I was wondering what kind of ship would need a stove like that, I take she is a whaler or a whale processer. Bit too big for cooking your fries on.

I've done the stern windows and the inner stern planking around the windows. Since I wanted to have something that would look right on both the inside and outside and since the kit provided 10 laser cut frames for the 5 windows, I decided to do something a little different. I decided to build up window "sandwiches", consisting of 2 frames with a piece of clear plastic between them (I'm sure that I've seen this done somewhere on MSW). With some thickness sanding, this created a perfect fit for the depth of the stern frames.

As I had indicated early in this log, the width of the stern frames was excessive and this required some careful filing to open the spaces between the frames to get the window frames to fit. The window frames were painted white after they were sanded to fit. I then glued in the outside window frames, placed the the clear plastic behind them and then glued in the inside frames. This was all going well until somehow I managed to have an inside frame jump out of my grasp and become a permanent resident of the ship's hold. As a result, I had to make a replacement from strip wood. Thankfully, it's on the side that will be covered by deck planking and not visible.

After the windows were installed, I chose to do the planking around them on the inside. This was done with boxwood, finished with Wipe-on Poly. I've started on the Great Cabin cabinetry. That and the exterior planking around the windows will be the next update.

All around great stuff Mobbsie.  True, you may want to spin that stay deadeye around.  But thanks for the mouse tip.  I recall the catharpins gave me fits the last time round.  Yours look good to me.......but if you want to make them thinner ---- best of luck!

Congrats on getting the mizzen angle dead on.  Always looks great when properly done.

    Really coming together, mate.

The hammock cranes and shrouds were added next. The cranes are made from two pieces of rosewood glued perpendicular to each other for strength and attached to the rail with a brass pin.

I feel like DaVinci who mixed his own paints. I mixed my own filler with sawdust from my planks. This is what the filler looks like before sanding.

Thanks for the kind words all!

Collingwood - I didn't bend the wood. I bought a sheet of 1mm thick walnut, laid the hull upside down on it, traced the line of the bow onto it, rough cut it out into a curved shape, sanded the curved edge to match the bow more exactly, took a compass and marked a line 4.5mm in following the curve and then cut that out, being careful not to split the wood. I then sanded the inside down so it was 4mm thick all along and attached it....presto! I don't have photos of this process, unfortunately....

Steve, good luck on your Conny.  I had not intended to add any "extras" to my build when I started out, but as I got into the build and got comfortable with my skills, and I found so much info on MSW, I decided to "go beyond the kit".

    Good luck on your Conny!

No update for my Conny at the moment, I've added more deck planks but nothing worth showing.  I have been spending a lot of time lately at the drafting table (read: computer) working on dwgs for my next build.  Not at liberty yet to say what it is, but I hope it will be an interesting subject.  I hope to work on a proof of concept during my 2 week Christmas break from work.

I'll post more Conny pics this weekend.  Again, thanks to everyone for looking in!

I will take some tomorrow especially for you Sjors

I am actually only 3 planks away from finishing the first layer
initially I thought I was going to have lots of difficulty but after a bit more fairing of the stern bulkheads all went well
and the extra plank I bended around the stern made it easy to pre bend the planks as I could use it to hold the plank in place

the last segment is cut and cemented in place......even though there is a 1/32 difference,  it looks much better.

I am thinking of using some .5mm strips to make up the difference.  it would cover those nasty seams and it would look a bit better.  I ran a center line down the middle.

I have some 5mm wide strips.......but then I thought of the dark mahogany strips I have.   these strips are an inch wide {about 25 mm}......the insert is about 5 inches wide.  it will save me from dealing with all those smaller strips.

not to worry about that cover I wasted my time on.........I'll put it to good use......somewhere
