Hi Mainstay
I think I may be responsible for starting the Niagara Club !!.
It is intended as humour but it is real in that we do watch out for each other and help wherever we can.
Having said that you are most welcome to join
As Rich said the best thing you can do is start you own build log

kenr got a reaction from mtaylor in Choosing next build - advice, please.
Hi Brett
I like a lot of others are building the Niagara from Model Expo
Whatever you decide you will need to order from the US or UK which works
when you pay by credit card
The Niagara requires more carpentry than some Here is some strip wood go
build it !!
Also the plans are in imperial measurements I tend to use a scale rule and measure off the plan
The Caldercraft Endeavour is another good choice
I don't think you need to buy practicums The 2 models I mentioned come with good instructions.
But your best option is to start a build log and tap into the experience and skills here
Good luck with it

Brett
Jotika/Caldercraft plans/instructions are probably as good as you can get
For one thing they are originally written in English, not translated

kenr got a reaction from geoff in Online pirate sites and unscrupulous merchants to avoid
Hi Geoff
If you have paid already it might be an idea to get your credit card company to
reverse the charge
I don't know the company but I don't like the smell of it

These are the little things that I guess the old pros assume everybody knowns how to do. That is why I will highlight these things for us neophytes, so others won't have to go searching for how to do this stuff. Call it a public service.

kenr got a reaction from edmay in Niagara 1813 by Don Quixote - Model Shipways - 1:64 - First build
Hello Brian
I will attempt to answer you first email
A kit bash is where you buy a kit and then enhance it
By buying better quality fittings and wood for example
Scratch is where you start from plans only. Purchase all you
components and build the model from " scratch"
Cutting everything to size yourself Usually needs a lot more
equipment such as planes band saws etc than a kit does
Hope that helps

kenr got a reaction from mtaylor in Pin pushers for planking?
Hi Mike
I use map pins And push them into the bulkhead adjacent to the plank I am gluing
The pins I use have a plastic head about 6mm in diameter which holds the plank
until the glue dries
Hope that helps

kenr got a reaction from Landlubber Mike in Pin pushers for planking?
Hi Mike
Yes I can.
You have to be careful not to split the bulkhead ply.
But as you said pre drilling a hole could help

kenr got a reaction from hamilton in model expo & Euro kit manufacturers
Hi Hamilton
I don't know the answer to your question re ME and what they stock
But the cost of importing and holding stocks and supplying service for multiple kit
ranges would be significant
You should look at sourcing these kits for the UK
Freight from the UK to Canada would only take a few days.
It works for us here in Australia

Hi AJ
Going back to your comments about the Humbrol paints
I sand off the scorch marks and always apply white undercoat before putting the top coat on
The top coat could need 2 or 3 applications
