Oh dear, oh dear, Ollie.  You're just working on your first build and it looks like you're already starting to drift towards the 'Dark Side' of scratch building.  Once that starts, I'm afraid there's no cure!

Neat. With over 9000 sqft of sail I bet she moves on. It's hard to even find pictures of her under full sail. They seem to rarely set the studding sails. I can imagine it's a ton of work to set all of those sails though.

Here is the original Pride with all sails set.

    And Pride II

I'm actually a little conflicted as to whether I want to display her with the studding booms set or not. I feel like they may be a little fragile.

    Greetings gentlefolk,

Thank you all for the replies. I sense that from your comments that this is a safe bet for a beginner, and that is reassuring.
Well in for a penny etc.

I suppose my next task will be to see if I can manage to set up a build log. I'm not the brightest light in the chandelier when dealing with PCs. Mr Default, that's me.

I've started a log book of sorts with notes taken from the many build logs and forum entries covering techniques, tips, tools hazards and such. I shall be referring to them as I progress.

All being well I will be starting after the holiday providing my model shop can get the kit for me.

    Hi Guys,

Thank you one and all for the good words and comments, they really are appreciated.

Peter,  Normally I would stain first or use black thread but on this occasion I am going to keep the Ratlines white, but thanks for the question.

Popeye,  All the Catherpins so far are behind the masts, there are 2 on the Mizzen, 4 on the Main and Fore masts, The position of the Shrouds will dictate if any are placed in front. With regard to the deadeyes they are all domed so that bits easy, Grant was referring to the position the holes, the single hole's should be furthest from each other with the double closest, I got it wrong, but not anymore.     :)

Grant, I made the Catherpins as you suggested with wire and served the span between the eyes with 0.25 black thread, I painted the eyes, it's going to get a lot tidier, The futtock shrouds will have one turn on the stave and will then be seized to the main shrouds, so again it will clean the staves up, hopefully.

Not a lot of progress to date, Santa's got some rope for me so I'm waiting on his imminent arrival, in the meantime I've made the Main mast Burton Pendants and also the Catherpins and Futtock Staves, once I get the rope I can do the shrouds and fit the completed parts.
    .
There not very exciting and I don't have any yet but if you want I will post some pics of the completed parts, just let me know.

Hi Patrick, that looks like a great kit to start out with.

Don't know much about Jokita kits.  Over here in the US the most popular and easiest to find kits are Midwest Products, Model Shipways, and Latina I have noticed.  So, that is why none of the Americans on this site probably have not built the kit.

If I am correct, Calderdraft and Jokita are UK based? I checked them out and the HMS Mars and the HM Supply look cool, maybe I will have to get one!

    Patrick,

It might just be that many modellers don't think she looks interesting enough, although she would seem to be on a par with their other smaller kits. That shouldn't put you off however, and if you want to have a go at it, why not? Perhaps you can be the first on MSW with a build log, and perhaps start a trend? After all, the Sherbourne now has a dedicated following.

If you have look at Jotika's website you'll see that there are couple of favourable reviews from people who have built it, along with a few pics.

Don't get too hung up on the phrase 'Nelson's Navy'. It's a catch-all expression which is designed to appeal to prospective purchasers, etc. Nelson probably never saw some of the ships themselves. I am a member of a dedicated Nelson website, where one of the other members is heartily sick of the term!

    Progress on model -

After cutting out the forward part of my main deck plan, I had to make quite a few adjustments in opening locations, etc. I've reconciled 2/3 of the plan and hope to fiinish checking/redrawing the stern section tonight. I've re-printed it and will go thru complete cutout/recheck tonight - hopefully with better results.

With the bow sections mated, I filled in the minute holes in the bow and the seams w/Green Stuff and later sanded, etc. The bow section is now mated to the hull and tonight I will apply Green Stuff to hide the seam. Hopefully, I will post pictures tomorrow - I forgot to download them from the camera last night.

Thanks Jeff, It came up really beautiful your Norfolk..  And lots of great pics for me to gather from..

Thanks Brian, I appreciate it, trying to make her a bit unique..

So I realised that joining two planks looked kinda average, and not how it would be done realistically..  so i set about coming up with a solution and i am going to put in the extra effort.. ...

I found the closest match of timber i could in the shed, it's a bit darker but i think that will look okay.. I set the table saw (its a rough one) to its minimal cut (about1mm) .. Then i made up a simple jig that anyone could whip up.. Consists of two hardened pieces of metal on a very flat surface, In this case 'stanley' blades, stainless would work good also..   So then file or sand and you cannot go too far beyond your desired thickness you have setup...  I have made a couple and they measure 7.5mm wide (thats what the stock was) wide by 0.6mm thickness . the calipers are a bit worn, but i know that so i accommodate for it..  Thanks so much mates..

Ok well i thought i better use some initiative and joined two planks side by side with glue and sanded.. This is all i could think of to do and once caulking is added i don't the eye will really notice it..

Turning some corners today..  Also when I got home early today I was feeling brave and in the mood to cut out my side of hull for the 'revealing' side of the ship..  Regards   Ollie

    Entry Steps to the Waist

There are two sets of Entry Steps attached to the fixed gangways, one either side. These have "Winding" treads to transition from the curve in the gangways - quite tricky things to get right as the angles for the slots in the fore stiles are different to the aft ones.

I cut the fore slots at 30 degrees, and the aft ones at 27.5 degrees. This gave the required "twist" in the steps.

The pics will tell the story of how I made them :

Joggling is the term. You joggle the planks in. Woodenboat forum will have information on that if you're interested in knowing more about it. The reason behind it was to allow the builder to caulk the seams. He needed a certain width of plank to allow his caulking iron to fit. There's no way to insert a 2 inch wide iron into a 1 inch space at the end of the plank so instead of tapering down that far, you joggle the plank to allow the iron to fit. The irons came in different sizes of course but practically speaking, you aren't going to caulk (pronounced "cork" by many) a plank with a pointy awl, you need a chisel shaped calking iron. FYI, a good experienced caulker, supervising newbies could often tell how fast his proteges were progressing and how well they were doing by the speed of their mallet blows and the sound they made. They make a sort of ringing noise. Caulking mallets are always used, no rubber mallets or hammers here.  if it didn't "ring true" he knew his apprentice was botching it up. And now you know where the expression "ring true" comes from.

Hello to all my friends on MSW.

I'm alive and well - thank you for the concern. The past month or so has encompassed a little bit of traveling, family visits and friends stopping by, keeping me busy and away from the shop. I sneak in a quick peek at MSW send a few Likes when I can and try to get an hour or so in the shop from time to time but it's been hard to do. I hope over the next few days or so I can pick up progress on my ship and spend more time on line with my friends on MSW.
Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and good health to all of you.

A couple of small pieces of progress. First, I planked around the outer side of the stern windows and painted that planking black. Secondly, I began the cabinetry in the Great Cabin. The planking followed my practice of using boxwood and was straight forward and quick.

The cabinetry is to be done following drawings in the Essex AOTS by Portia Takakjian. It will consist of an enclosure under the windows and two cushioned benches and a doored cabinet in front of that enclosure. I made the enclosure from boxwood sheet and strip to fit the space and finished it with Wipe-on Poly. I won't do the other items until after the deck planking has been done.

I'm now working on the margin planks for the deck planking and will follow that with the remainder of that planking.

Hi all. Well the first two eyelets were too small, they had 1mm centres, second round was heaps quicker of course.. Pictures show how i made them, i want to have a full circle of metal not a piece of wire joined as i dont have the right soldering gear... these are flattened 2mm brass rod that was supplied for axles, eyelets have 1.5 mm centres now and look right.. primed and let to dry before black..  progress is slow until holidays and then will be patchy but hope to get a couple of solid days in, instead of little bits...  Ollie

    Another update on my progress.
Main Gun Deck is now fixed into place with no errors
Started to plank the Deck with Tulip wood. Very nice looking wood.
Deck now fixed onto the bulwarks with knees fitted.

Photo looking up at the deck from the underside.

All the planks cut to length and drilled at ends only for treenails.

Waterways in and now ready to plank..

    First planks laid.

Will post another update when Gun Deck is complete.
    Thanks for looking in.
