fnick got a reaction from Canute in Proxxon KS230 advice
Thanks for the feedback Russ. Basic but working is perfect for me. I'm just after being able to do some cuts a bit quicker. It will be interesting to see how much I use it and if its limitations hinder me which I doubt at least at the start.

fnick got a reaction from popeye the sailor in Albertic by michael mott - FINISHED - Scale 1:100 - RESTORATION - Bassett-Lowke Model
Hi Michael
When the model goes back to the museum the before photo should be next to it along with a large brass plaque thanking you for your restoration efforts! Oh and there should also be an unveiling ceremony. Nothing less than you deserve! Bravo.

Here are the pics of the finished model :
I'm taking a break from building ships for a while. My next project is a free download of a Card model - a vintage Yamaha YA-1 motorbike. I'll put up some pics of my progress in Shore Leave.

fnick reacted to Ulises Victoria in Royal Louis 1780 by Ulises Victoria - FINISHED - Mamoli - Scale 1/90 - French 126-gun ship
Update on the build. Making of the crownests. Photos are self explanatory, I think
By using a copy from the plans, I placed a small dent on the platfor with an awl, which allowed me to place the thin pieces of wood at the correct distance.
Terrible wood here, by the way.
Using magnets to press the sides.
And a rubber band
It's been said: you can never have too many clamps

Hi Ulises
You're going to have to circle the areas where the damage was because I can't find them!! Your RL is going to be something special when it's finished!

Update and an example of how Murphy's law works
I posted before that I could not post photos because my camera's battery depleted and with the house moving and stuff I couldn't find the charger. Well, the very day I received my charger replacement, I found my old charger... hahaha this is soooo funny! 🤬
Ok, after the crash described before, I made some repairs, and started working on my ship again.
As of today Aug. 15-18 I finished placing all the gunport covers. I placed them randomly open, closed or semi-closed to break monotony. Not sure how that worked haha.
With this I finish with the hull work and as of today I start with the masting and rigging process. Can't wait to start this area which is the one I enjoy yhe most!!! FINALLY!!!
I am posting some photos of the ship's present state and of my workshop which finally starts looking a bit more organized.
Thank you all for watching and as usual, comments are welcome.

fnick reacted to RMC in Granado by RMC - FINISHED - Caldercraft - 1:64
The sheer rails are now on. The 10x1mm timber supplied was very reluctant to bend in two dimensions. It was glued in two stages: first around the curved bow (taking eight clamps to properly seat them), then once the glue was properly dry, the remainder towards the stern. The latter required the timber to be bent downwards quite considerably. If there is a lesson in all of this it is the need for lots of clamps.
Here is one of the Syren guns. It needs to be touched up and eventually rigged.

fnick got a reaction from GrandpaPhil in Le Mirage by fnick - Corel - 1:75 - wood
Evening all
Small but quite satisfactory update. All the gunports are lined! Glad that's finished. Busy planking the decks. That is progressing quite nicely. Progress picture below. On the second picture I was quite close with the flash so the true wood colours are no way near as harsh! Just saying
Oh and a big thank you to Hubac's Historian for the tip on how to get rid of superglue stains. worked a treat! Still got a few to remove.

fnick got a reaction from GrandpaPhil in Le Mirage by fnick - Corel - 1:75 - wood
Hi all
quick update. Deck planking finished. Treenails simulated by pressing pencil into deck. Unfortunately in a few places planking was flush on supporting deck so pencil went through ☹️... Havee no planking timber left (and I was being careful with wastage!) So will check to see if the couple of holes can be covered up by deck furniture. Dark patches are where I used same type of timber sanded down and mixed with water and PVA to fill holes. Color did not match... Does not look as bad in real life but not sure what to do about that for now. First level of handrails glued down. Here are some pictures.
thanks for looking.

fnick reacted to RGL in HMS King George V by RGL - FINISHED - Tamiya - 1/350 - PLASTIC
Multiple tiny bits finally starting to come togeather. 44inch spotlights, 21 inch signal mamas (Northstar), replacements for the Pom Poms and single 20mms, ladders.....bottom half almost done, need to rig the signal ropes.
A source of frustration is Pontos has designed the PE for the Prince of Wales not the KGV, which just throws things out a tad, and the extras are on the borderline of my level of competence because they are so small. One of Pontos phots shows a DF sticking out the front of the bridge but it’s not on the plans or the frets, so it’s not going to be there.

The treenailing is finished. Here is the result. On it is one coat of polyurethane with another one or two to come. The bulwarks now have to be finished and painted and the frames of the gun ports touched up.

fnick reacted to marktiedens in Nuestra Senora del Pilar de Zaragoza by marktiedens - FINISHED - OcCre - scale 1:46
All the sub-assemblies I`ve been building are now in place on the decks - ship`s wheel, capstan, all the pinrails for the masts, poop railings, ship`s bell,etc.,etc. I re-did the knee on the poop deck where the flagstaff goes - it was not shown in the instructions, but was shown on the plans. The problem was the parts in the kit did not match the plans & didn`t fit - the finished stern is almost 10mm higher than the plans show! They showed the flagstaff wedged between the knee & the stern face - a very unlikely situation. I made a second knee & made a spacer & cap so the flagstaff would fit neatly between the two knees.
Just a few misc. eyebolts & cleats to add.

Sjors... One thing I've learned in this hobby is that if there is something you really really don't like, then undoit and redoit. The sense of satisfaction you get is great!
Best regards.

fnick reacted to Ulises Victoria in Royal Louis 1780 by Ulises Victoria - FINISHED - Mamoli - Scale 1/90 - French 126-gun ship
Thanks to all for your words of encouragement.
Repairs are done!!!
I'm actually amazed at the amount of damage (minimal) the ship sustained after that crash against the hard floor.
5 hull cannons broke form their supports and that was easily fixed with 2 ton epoxy.
A crack in the upper rear bulwark. This was filled with putty but never really dissapeared even after painting. An unglued handrail and that was it. What really impressed me was that not a single one of the already placed gunport covers came off.
Unfortunately, patches show, so this ship is not going to win any contest, not that I plan to take it to a contest anyhow after this event. So this ship's destiny is to serve as one more adornment in my living room, where most of the visitors know nothing of shipbuilding and their comments are most likely like: Oh what a nice ship. ....You built it, really? ....Wow you must have a lot of patience... ok now what do you have to drink?
So I am already working on the ship where I left. Almost done with starboard side gunport covers. 4 left to do as of this moment. Then 33 on the other side, and I'm done with hull work. RIGGING NEXT!!!
Sorry no photos yet. To top it off my camera's battery depleted and for the life of me, can't find the battery charger. Understandable after a house moving!
Cheers all. Promise photos as soon as new charger arrives.
