there is nothing better then experience. if you know all the formulas and can rattle them off by heart but dont know what they mean in the real world you have learned nothing.

i used rubber bands to hold the deck to the bulkheads and keel . i use them alot as they can boldly hold things where no clamps have clamped before

hello Brian i have started on the San Salvador. the buildlog is in my signature.

slow progress. finished another door and attached most of the shutters that leaves 1 door 2 windows and 8 shutters i also had a look at the second stairs and they are not as bad. with a bit of adjustement i think io can make that one fit. then i can compare them and see where i went wrong with the other there is still hope

a good time to check some other stuff out David maybe look at some of the deck furniture as Augie said if you cnat get the bend out that way you can do the same as i did on my Endeavour. i have been lucky so far with no bend keels but th eblocks make me sleep better knowing i wont accidently push soem bulkhead out of alingment

thanks David , John, Jim and Wim naah i cant ignore them too long they are too much bothering me. but i need to be in the right mood to tackle them and after a days work tackling problems my mind wants a rest so i work on the easy things i got the parts from the hardware store . the board itself is from pressed cardboard (i think ) and the pedestals are actualy drawer knobs. i know its not the best looking board but it was cheap

David . best way to check is to lie the keel flat on a surface. if its bended it shoud show up. not sure what the standard practice is to right a keel but i would wet the outsides (soakign could loosen the plywood) and then clamp it between two haeavy straight planks

thanks for reminding me John. yes that is part of the problem but i also have that i have a 3 mm height gap between deck and top of stairs. i think i pulled the bottom stright stairs a bit make them not horizontal. i need to try and fit the second stairs to see if it got the same problem but they came apart a bit when trying to fit it in. drilling the holes and making the centre pole longer does not work as the stairs in eachothers way for the fitting. so i ll need to cut them down again. i am trying to put i t out of my mind and concentrate on my work but i know its going to be hard. i dont want to give up but if it comes down to havign to scratchbuild the stairs i dont think i am up for that

hello David. that sounds good. the back 2 bulkheads on my endeavour where longer too but thats where the keel curves upwards and the frames need a lot of fairing so i assume that is the same with your bulkhead. Augie its because thats where i am at with my endeavour adn its all fresh in my memory ( give a few more months and i ll proabbaly have forgotten it lol) so please join in as i am still a newbie like David .

thanks Jim so happy i got the first curved railing on the stairs. as you cna tell it did split a bit but i will fix that up . hope the second one will go as smoothly also finished cutting all the holes in the second deck really happy with the progress this weekend. next wil be to install the 2 doors on the second side. the 2 at the front and back are going to be a challenge as i didnt realise i dont have enough access from the inside to make it easy

hi David just a few things : did you also check the bottom of the bulkheads. they should sit almost to the bottom of the fals keel with just the thickness of the planks you are using left i the picture it looks like the first 3 bulkheads are lower on the left while the other bulkheads are more straigth not sure if that is because of the angle you took the picture finally as you filed down the top of the bulkheads where the rounded on top ? ( i cant tell from the pics). if so you l make sure you keep the same curve
-
Robbyn that doesnt look to bad for your first try. bit of filing and shaping then repaint and they l look good . its a lot of work scratchbuilding parts but so rewarding when you see how much you improved the look of your model

The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
