Very good topic to have in one place. Thanks for starting

I buy the plactic cups (found at my grocery store) that are use for condiments. Works great to put glue in for easy acess and seal with a lid to prevent drying out.  A package of 100 cost aroun $1.50 US.

1/32 is the same scale as mine. As far a amount of wood needed, I had a friend give me a pile of cherry. I just resawed, planed and sanded as I need. So I don't really have a good list for amounts. Looking forward to more.

Made a trip to my printer today.  I wanted to get the plans printed on their equipment because it would give me a chance to look at the scale I wanted.

WOW is about all I can say about 1:24....

I had the 1st frame printed in three scales, 1:48, 1:32, and 1:24.  After seeing the size, I have decided on 1:32

Now that I have the scale picked out, time to figure out sizes and types of wood.  I hope somebody out there can help me with the amounts needed.....  this is going to be so fun.

Here we go....  I have finally got back in the saddle again. Although my experience in POB or POF is not much, I do have extensive experience with scratch building 1/144 scale WWI and WWII vessels for RC.

I joined Chuck's Syren build years ago and loved it, but I had to eventually drop the build after a time.

When I get this one completed I hope to build cross section that includes a mast section. One of my favorite builds in the past I have seen included a cross section with a couple of marines in the crows nest, firing back down  into the melee.

Like other new builders, I have been looking at some of the other builds and I am definitely a little intimidated! I look forward to seeing how well I can do this.

Not sure, but here is a quick question, is it possible to move the cross section forward or aft to include a mast? and how would I perform that?

I have a little table against the wall of my dining area where I do most of my building. And a full wood shop outside near the house. But, I’ve wanted to make a space for my little Byrnes saw and my spindle sander in the house, as I use them fairly often.

So, since my kids have moved out several years ago, I kind of took over part of my son's old room, took a break from building the skipjack, and built this work bench last week. It has a shelf to store my wood, a little vac, a peg board and some lighting. There are no plugs on that wall, so I have to use an extension cord.

Quick but serviceable. If I get a little mini lathe again, I can use it there as well, I think, storing it on the lower shelf.

Well, somehow 2 1/2 years have flown by since I last did any work on this... so long in fact that when I came back to have another crack at it, I realised to my horror I'd thrown out the original parts!

That said, the process of remaking them today has been educational and I've made some real headway. I realised that I'd been approaching the build by trying to crack a nut with a sledge hammer... This time, rather than trying to sand down the frame parts, I gently carved away the excess with a nice sharp xacto blade.. The walnut was lovely and soft and as long as I approached inside curves from both directions and took it steady, it was surprisingly quick to get a whole frame made. It's by no means perfect, and I'm expecting to remake this frame when I've made some more... but it's certainly teaching me lots.

So... here are the pictures of my first full doubled up frame. It's the dead centre frame. I tacked it to the keel with a little carpenters glue to see how it looked and even the process of doing that made me realise quite how fragile this is going to be when i assemble it until I get the horizontals in.

    OMG!
TWO YEARS HAVE PASSED since I last worked on my Triton!😳
When I was still teaching I remember meeting retired colleagues who said that they were too busy!  I would tell them they were idiots...I was not going to be too busy when I retire!
So, now I’m the idiot! 🤬🤯

    UPPER DECK CLAMPS
However, I finally dusted off the Triton and good thing I took good notes! I had made a measured diagram (over two years ago!) of the upper deck clamps  which were symmetrical anchor stock unlike the lower deck clamps. This was a nice surprise that allowed me to get right to building!

Rather than cutting partial planks I decided to make a run of full deck clamps that would span over twice the length of the keel. I thought this would make it easier to keep the planks running true.  I realized that to mirror the two sides of the ship I had to flip the beam diagram for the starbooard side.  I measured and laid out the cuts the same as before.

[grrrr! Messed up some how and prematurely posted this!]

[Man, I keep messing up and losing my edits!]

When time came to start gluing I noticed that a couple frames had warped a bit. 😡I moistened them a little, inserted spacers and glued the planks one at a time, allowing a long cure time between pieces (8-10 hours).

While waiting I began preparing 1.35 mm stock for the “thick" stuff that would be next. Thanks to Bilge Rat's advice to get a slitting blade, I had a lot more success than before.

The planks on my model need to be 0.80 mm!  I was having trouble getting such narrow stock on my saw...but I then remembered right under my bench I had a pizza box full of random veneers! I began rifling through, finding all kinds of goodies but not quite what I needed. 😢Just about to give up, I spotted a piece of 2’x2’ Finnish birch plywood in my wood stores that is...0.8 mm!😳😃 My plank woes are solved! (I hope!)

    Clear skies and sharp tools!

Just a few pics to show progress and lessons learned .  Main lesson is that scratch building is very diffrent from kit,s in that accurate measurement and calculation become a lot more important . I neglected to construct a proper build frame and late on in the build discovered a 6 mil difference in width at front and back as can be seen in the last pic dipite my efforts to work with it . So i have decided to waste no more time on what will always be a flawed build . Dispite this i would recommend any potential scratch builders to give this section or similiar a try before attempting something large as i have learned a few valuable lessons along the way . eg caulking at this scale is different from my usual 1:64 or 1:72 scale .  Good news is i have now started the full Triton build and have already got the build board sorted ,, see lesson 1 learned !!!   .I hope to start a build log soon but am slowly trying to get my head round the cant frames etc before i publish to many mistakes

I am encouraging everyone to do a build thread of their BlueJacket projects on www.modelshipworld.com .

So, to "put my money where my mouth is," here's a deal for you:

If you do a build thread of any current BlueJacket kit, when you are finished, I will give you a 10% discount on the next BlueJacket kit you get from us. This offer will be good through at least the end of 2020 and maybe I'll extend it even further.
Yes, this offer applies to the several build threads already in progress.
