Off ship rigging as far as I can go,   as all snake builders know the mass of lines are  the norm

Hi Antony the kit is very well made and the carvings are brilliant and well cast .
As promised a few pictures of what I have been up to. The first planking is going on and to break it up I have built the ships boats. The largest launch I have included some carvings on the stern , not quite sure if they had them but I like them .
More to come so thanks for looking

sorry I didn't get back last evening.........I had supper and Zonked out.   .....tough day at work     these two pictures were taken before the camera decided it needed a recharge.   I was at my desk,  so the pictures may not be too good.   the blocks work well.......here is the what the lower one looks like.......the bottom main stay is doubled and will look thicker that all the rest.

the stay will terminate with a pulley assembly at the base of the fore mast......like this...

then I realized that doing the stays in this manner,  would be too much for the mast trees.....causing them to bend very easily.   I had to add the back stays to help me out.   later,  it ended up on my table.....I had to stand to better run the rigging.   I didn't take too many pictures...feeding the camera.......but I ended up with this bit of progress.

here's a better shot of the main stay rigging.

.....and the pulley assemblies associated with them.

the mizzen will only have this one stay that is done this way.........it's not tied off yet.

the other blocks you see will be devoted to the braces.    there is one other stay that I need to add to the mizzen........I may do it this way as well.

this is the standing rigging ......so far.   I will do the rest when I get back to her.   then I can start the running rigging     thanks for looking in      thanks for the good word Piet........and thanks to those who hit the like button

Thank you very much for the comments EL I have been watching your build with great interest especially your attention to detail with the placement of the gunports. I love fiddling about with little details that just makes a small difference. Looks like I will have to get the popcorn in lol

    Hi Martyn!

Good to see another S.R. build on here as I am building her myself at the moment. Looks like you are off to a great start on her planking. She is a beast of a hull to plank so i can understand wanting to break up the monotony of planking. Those boats turned out nice. I like how you decorated them. While I can't speak to historical accuracy, they add an interesting element that makes them stand out. That is something rarely seen on the ships boats as I think that many of us gloss over as a necessary part of the build but not one that gets a lot of attention. Nice to see something different!

Stunning work on the rigging  Michael just wondered if you know that there are a set of sails for the Vasa . If you look on the Cornwall model ship site they sell them. I have fitted them to mine and they don't look to bad .

    @Edwin,
.....produce a masterpiece... Thx for the trust you have in me And I think you mean that you participated in the four days march  from Nijmegen or as we call it "de vierdaagse van Nijmegen). well, respect my friend

And of course the weekly update:
I removed the woodstrips from the deck in front. I was not quit satisfied with it. Allready replaced it. Only have to put the pins on it....
I also had to do some modifications. So I had to lower the frontside of the frontdeck because I found out that that piece of wood that coveres the front, wasn't high enough.
And I did some painting. The black paint I will polish and then a second black coating. But that's for next week....

Hi everyone, thanks for all the likes. I haven't disappeared just busy with some big decisions hahaha

Yes Messis the two upper gunport lids are painted with the St George cross (the flag of England) the lower port lids which are all red will have carved lion heads similar to that of the vasa once I get round to producing them. The st George cross on the upper lids are depicted in Van der Velde's and eppings sketches of her. The lion heads are a bit of artistic license however are shown on the painting presented to King Charles.

    Hi Mates,

I had mentioned that I slightly tweak Chuck’s (Syren) already super excellent blocks. This how I do it. The changes are very subtle, but for me make it worth it.

    1) enlarge the pre-drilled holes (I’m sure most of you already do this anyway)

    2) using the same drill bit I now angle it to “round out” and deepen the pulley look further.

Using a file I add grooves to the upper and lower edges

Using a small sanding block I sand the four side edges a bit inward.

Last bit I just started “now” after going to Chuck’s site to order more rope I saw his new blocks that included the four pins that attach the two block sides together. Hmmm – that looked so great.

Granted his blocks are larger but nonetheless wanted to add that look as well.

Using a tiny drill bit just drilled eight holes.

Here are some comparisons. AGAIN absolutely NOT implying anything at all missing regarding Chuck’s super perfect blocks down to the smallest scale.

This pic is a perfect example of how amazing his super small blocks actually are without any of my obsessive tweaks (;-)

PS: whatever these are called I have to pull them all off. Again a novice with rigging when I made those it did not occur to me to be sure that ropes will be able to loop through – well they can’t – did not leave enough space grrrr.

    Cheers,

@Edwin: thx and as you say, I have all the time in the world. I want to be busy with this ship for at least several years

    And a small update:
Put some peaces on the decks. For the colour, I used walnut wood stain and Artesania oil. Till now everything fits pretty well. I tried with round timber if the holes for the bowsprit and the masts were in the right place and they did

After a large glass of wine tried some tree nailing lightly drilling holes into planks and marking with a pencil an absolute disaster. Ripped existing planking on part of the quarter deck using flexicut detail knife and relaying planks, including a couple of others on port side. Phew, got away with it. Ship's cat now hides the only remaining evidence of trenailing attempts. A rather large cat about the height of a polar bear according to the scaling of this kit. Assembled ladders, but not glued in position. I mean they're identical to those on the Corel Half Moon which is 1/50 scale. This build is 1/90 scale so they can't both be correct. Getting a bit fed up with Occre so many parts are not right including the massive cannons for the main deck and all the metal parts. Bought some canons from my usual supplier, 30mm long wooden carriages.
