BLACK VIKING reacted to cobra1951 in HMAV Bounty By cobra1951 - Artesania Latina - 1:48
    Started changing the bulkheads
First i wanted to block up one of the doors that came out into the stairs and get rid of the middle window.

Cut a piece of wood to fit the gap leaving the same size space as the other windows

then glued it into the gap

Then i planked all the bulkheads

Just need to decide where to place a new door in the bulkhead in the last picture so that it doesn't open into the bilge pipes.
Cant move it to the middle because then it will open into the mainmast so as far as possible to the right is most likely.
Once done just a sanding and a coat of varnish on the planks before i fit the rest of the beams etc to the bulkheads

Thank you Dirk and Mark, yes very happy - still :-)

Thank you Frank, I will do so!
I still was asked how the slots in the timberheads were done:   Opened the hole by twisting the drill carefully up and down. Then I used the file that I already used for the glazing bars of the stern for the sides of the holes and made a even more pointed one for the top and bottom surfaces. Then I used a toothpick to smoothen the edges.       And here still the comparison to the original part :-)   Replaced the gunports, added a threshold, added the outer timberheads, guides for the ropes.     XXXDAn

As you might have guess I had the same issues on the other side as well

Not so bad from the inside:

Hopefully all this stuffs will be covered good after the final planking/lining

Of course as with all parts until now, the fitment remains a problem...

    Same for the stern:

For which I also had a bending problem

P.S.: Can you recommend me a tool (even with link) that is used to bend such parts or all parts? Because I start to get the feeling that without such tool it's pretty much impossible not to break them

Thank you all for your attention, your comments and all the kind words.

I will take a break now, but I will be back with my next project. This will be the Fregatte Berlin by Corel, but sure not before April.

    Finally

I have decided to hang one or two of the ships boats from the Quarter Davits. That then leaves more space in the waist to allow a better view down into the Gun Deck. Also I like the way a boat on the Davits looks. So before I get into the next round of rigging I assembled and loose rigged both Quarter Davits. I had predrilled for the bracket pins a long time ago and they went on with no real problem by using a pin punch between the deadeyes. I have left some of the rigging adjustable so I can set up the boats later.

And so onto the Braces. Because they are outboard of the hull and might get snagged I am rigging they loose at the moment. First the Fore Yard all run but then loosened off.

Then the same for the Main Yard.

tightened down the Main Yard Braces to allow me to make up and rig the lizards on each side, then slackened off again.

That’s me up to date with photos, it’s getting a bit busy in there now. I really love the way a model starts to come to life as the rigging goes on.
I have also rigged the Crossjack Yard with Braces now.
And I’m starting to make up blocks and lines for hanging the Driver Gaff which is the next task.

    Thanks for dropping by

    Update.... New Sculpy figure.
Mostly worked on adding new cannon ports and lids the last few days.  As a break from that tedious task, I took a couple of hours out to play with this new little bust figure, very much the same as the one shown in earlier posting used on the gallery panels....slightly improved.  These will be added to the aft main bulkhead.  Again, using sculpy.... my favorite medium for such figures.

Another improvement to one of the newer panels....  the "Queen on the Throne" carving seemed to have too much blank space on each side of the carving, so I added these two very simple little horses.  Works much better for my eye.

I think this has turned out to be my favorite panel at this point.

    Hi Gents,

It's been while since my last post and a lot has happened.

Thanks guys for all your comments and remarks and for hitting the like button, it means a lot.

I've completed my trails on the Ebonizer with mixed results and not all good. I put some Pear and Lime in the solution and gave it a 40hr soak to find out the depth of penetration, the results I admit are disappointing, penetration was no more than if it had been soaked for 2hrs, the surface area built up with stain and started to crystalize, when rubbed with a finger a dirty brown stain remained. Not a good result at all.

Best results came from soaking in Tea for approximately 2hrs, allow to dry then soak in the stain for a further 2hrs, allow this to dry and apply a Wipe on Poly to finish. All work that needs to be done must be before staining as the base wood will show through if done afterwards.

I do have a picture of the Sheer Rails after they have been treated, I'm happy with the results for these.

Next up is the update on the Launch.

Second planking is now complete, although this is a lot better than the first planking there is still a lot of room for improvement.

The planks are a lot tighter together due to bevelling the edges but I still had trouble with getting a smooth bend on each of the lower strakes around the bow section. Although the strakes were measured at the Bow, Midships and Stern there is some a lot more that can be done and so I've put myself on stand-by to do this properly, if anybody would like to pop round mine and give me a practical demonstration of how to do this please feel free, I have seen the tutorials so feel a little better but putting it into practice is a whole different ball-game.

The final planking will be Pear with the waterline in Holly, the top of the hull will have decorations on top of Red Heart, hopefully this will be a paint free zone but we will see, never say never.

The Pear has been ordered from C.M.B. but is still in tree trunk form and is waiting to be cut, I've ordered Strips and Sheets so hopefully will have all angles covered, I really must get a Thickness Sander, it will save me money in the end, I just need to persuade the boss.!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry about the quality of the pics, I promise to do better next time round.

Half way through and not looking to bad

The 2nd planking is now complete, somehow a rogue plank has infiltrated.

So there we are guys, your up-to-date with where I am, Hopefully I will have an update sooner rather than later.

    Hi Guys,

Its been a while since my last post but thankfully the festivities are almost over and I am able to get back into it.

All problems are solved on the domestic front, cars fixed, toilets working again, TV's all sorted so the boss is happy again and that makes me a happy chappie.

Since my last post the first planking is now done, I didn't post any progress pics mainly because I was so embarrassed with the result, it honestly looked like a real dogs dinner with so many patches and fill-ins, believe me it was a mess. I have filled and sanded down and given a single coat of diluted PVA, so as far as the second planking is concerned and although it's only Lime I will be using it to practice on in readiness for the final planking which will be Swiss Pear.
I am studying Keith Harris's tutorial on planking and am determined to get it right so Wayne, I'm coming your way.

I was given a link into ebonizing wood by Grant and so am in the process of making up an experimental batch, I want the Sheer Rail to be Ebony and I want it in one piece, but as Ebony is the devil to try and bend and I would be trying to bend a 10mm x 4mm piece, it's not going to happen so an alternative is needed.

OK, I have some pics, they are of the completed 1st planking with filler, except for inside the boat which will be in full view once the bulkheads are removed. As I have said guys, apologies for not posting progress shots.

The first two pics are of the inside of the boat which as you can see is looking ok.

Now we come to the dogs dinner, almost more filler than wood.

So thats it for now, next job is to put a couple of rows of planking at the top and the Garboard planks then take a few measurements, my heads starting to hurt already.

Sorry it's not much gents, hopefully it will get better.

the wondering...........what does happen to a build,  when a modeler leaves the table?  does it get put in a box and end up in a closet or attic.....not wanting to part with it for sentimental reasons.    circular file?    given away,  lost.........or forgotten?   does it get put on display in remembrance,  with the nagging reality that it will never finished?   wonderful memories.....and a painful embrace........

"well,  my friend Augie.........we're going to know what becomes of your build.....that wonderful ship."

I don't think humility would be the word I'd use Bug...........honor,  respect,  courage...the willingness to give part of one's self to help another,  are just some of the words I'd use.   that right word is out there......perhaps we'll find it,  maybe even lay tongue to it,  and speak the word aloud.  from what I've seen here in these past texts.....someone will hear it   Diane asked me to help...I was all too happy to find a person with your skill......let alone how easy it was to do.

everyone here recognizes what a tremendous task you've laid on your table.......so good to see how many offered to help.  just goes to show how close the MSW community is.   strength in unity....whoever said that was right.  the confed is 'on' the best place it could ever be......I know you will do a great job in finishing her.  have fun with her    thanks again for your help with this.........which will be a stunning tribute to Augie when finished......and again,  my condolences to Diane,  who I'm sure will be looking in on your progress..    may your x-actor cut true.

Elijah, thanks for the link. Some useful things there, though not exactly what I was looking for; however, thanks to one of the topics there, I learned that the proper term is "stropping" which led me to this : http://www.modelboatyard.com/stropping.html
Anyhow, on with the build as I had a nice long weekend to indulge myself.
Maybe one remark (for those who think I can work at the speed of light...):
All this has been done over a span of two weeks, butI only started the build log last Friday...

    Next was the companion:
    After a couple of hours:

    Halfway:

And finished; made a little measuring (and therefor cutting )mistake but have been able to camouflage it

I then noticed that my straightening false keel was FINALLY almost dry, so I choose a very small ad interim project: carving the rudder into shape:
    Cut out of the frame

    Nicely shaped, notches made, and all sanded up;

Almost didn't believe it to be that same lump of wood, so puzzle-check for fun

Finally I could get my hands dirty with the bulkheads and the false keel; fitted everything, nailed some pins along te centerline of the false deck to align the false keel, and then started -very carefully - to nail down the bulkheads one by one..

Done! Now I could start glueing those bulkheadds in place! Things are looking great!

Tomorrow evening after work, I'll get the knightheads into place, so I can start fairing the hull day after tomorrow.

so, as you can see, haven't got this to my step son yet!?

Still working on it, always takes longer than you expect......Not rushing it!

Since my last installment I got the interior buttoned up, well enough to get the roof secured. Got  the railing around the barrels done and a lot of the weathering done overall, D rings created out of brass rod and 00-90 washers, rigging started. Also, it took me a few tries, but I finally got a tension adjuster built for the rigging that I'm satisfied with!

    hope you like!

Leaving tomorrow morning for Marthas Vinyard, getting gravel from the movie location of where Quint's shack was...... thought that would be very appropriate for the base.

To start assembling the laser cut stern frames I first had to glue the two outer
frames for each side together. They were then placed in the corresponding slots
on the stern. Then three more frames were glued to these. In all 5 layers were
    assembled on each side.

Here they are all glued and clamped to dry.

Once dry the laser char was removed. A reference line needed to be marked on
the frames. To do this I glued a piece of pencil lead to the end. Holding the strip
wood against the hull I traced the reference line. The wood will be removed so it
is close to the hull fairing.

I'm confident you'll do it right. The styrene strips offer one advantage : as long as you are not happy with the result : wrip it off. I can assure I did

Well here it is : oars and other stuff coming from the mini kits were added.

All the re-working is coming along pretty well so far.  Looks like I am ripping far more off both sides than I planned, but like the direction it's going in.... Still pretty much a train wreck, not ready for show at this point.

Need a break from all that, so I began a new carving this evening.
I really like and admire Bill Short's carvings, so I'm going to take a shot at one of my favorite carvings from his SOS (still under construction)....

Note:  The top photo is taken from Bill Short's build log.  The bottom photo is just the beginning of my attempt to replicate it.
Decided to go back to hard maple for this one because of the fine detail required.

The head took a while but it's done and I’m satisfied with the result.  I used Minwax Wood Hardener on the end of the head rail where a line will be tied off since the end looks very thin.  Not much else to say, except I’m on to the ‘seats of ease’.  I’m thinking, however, that before I complete the platform, I will have to install the bow sprint and its gammoning.

Thanks to those who clicked the 'like' button and to Frankie and Mark for your comments.

Mark ~ thanks for the link you posted. I've only had the milling machine for about 3 months and I wish I had had one much earlier in the build.

Frankie ~ first, thanks for liking my build! You said that I "appear to think that I'm not as good a builder as some people." Well, you're right, and it's not for no reason that I feel that way. There are so many incredible build logs on the forum by so many fabulous builders (none of whom will I mention as I wouldn't want to miss any). I'm just blown away when I look at some of these build logs and see the perfect detail that goes into these ships.
But --- you're also right about the scale at which most of these models are built and I would have been happier to have started a project at 1:48 or at least 1:64.
When I started this build it was my intention to finally have a model that will at least have a passable resemblance to the real thing, and as it stands at the moment I'm quite pleased with its general appearance - it looks fairly acceptable at about 2 metres distance!
It's the detailed parts of the ship that sometimes cause me to be disappointed with my results . . . but I'm old enough and ugly enough to realise that I can live with the limits of my own skills.

Well its been a bit hard going, as I should have done the fire buckets earlier, anyone having a go at this should think on this.
Now having enuff KG etched crests(thanks to Daniel)I started thinking on how to place them with the shroud ropes done.

I added a strip of plastic from the tops left over part, stuck this behind to the top of the plastic rear bulkhead of the poop deck.

Then used plastic glue to hold buckets, later will add CA to the handles.

Later when all settled will paint handles and surrounding area black.

Next its on to the upper shroud ropes.
Used .63mm for the lower and for the upper will use .30mm black.

For both shrouds I will use .08mm for the ratlines.

And the next adventuere started here on MSW with some pictures of the official start of exchanging the copper on the Constitution.

Great picture I thought, and interesting the damages on the left top of the picture. But then I saw the same thing on other photos and realised them being too even.

And on top of it symmetrical to the other side ...

... time to have a closer look.

So then developed a treasure hunt over several forums, many helping and each revealing some new hints.

The more qualified opinions went soon direction of a rudder lift, in case the rudder has to be put back into it´s hinges. Chapman gave the hint, that those holes was also mentioned in the 1930´s plans, with 2" diameter and inside lead. So must must have served a purpose.

By that time I found holes like these on plenty of rudders. Then appeared drawings from Nares and MSW that showed emergency rudders with the use of those hole. In my german forum I got a link to a picture of the rudder of St. George in Thorsminde showing the same holes and I was done: Time to drill two small holes :-)

And here the tackles that were used according to Nares and MSW: The aft ones served to lift the rudder and the fore ones to juggle the pins into the hinges. Once done, the rope was easily to be retrieved.

So the mystery about the holes is getting clearer, I will take the tackles down soon as they were only used to reship the rudder :-)

    Cheers, Daniel

So far I've been able to get the first planking done on the launch. Was a few annoying gaps that I couldn't seem to close, but I can deal with those later.

I did end up having to use one stealer at the bow, which I detest having to do, although again, first planking so can get away with it and it's barely visible on the inner surface.

Gave a light sande and coated with watered down PVA to seal the planks

2nd layer to do now, and then an attempt at removing the frames...
