ulrich got a reaction from GrandpaPhil in Mamoli
Looking at an older kit of Mamoli's Gretel, CM stands for Mahogany Plywood.
Hope this will help.

ulrich reacted to Snug Harbor Johnny in Best result on a single-planked hull
Filling and fairing will help as posted above. Even on double planked kits, the same 'pin hole' question applies. Pre-bending planks (with trial fitting) takes most of resistance out of the wood to be applied. I used 'finger clamping' after mixing a small amount of 'one minute' epoxy as an adhesive ... this was before the advent of CA. Be careful will CA, as it can go everywhere (including fingers) without a micro-tip applicator.
Hmmmmm, this JUST got me thinking about a new approach I haven't seen yet. What if one glued extra wood just along the sides (or even just one side) of each bulkhead along the edge - sort of like a ship 'ribs' in contact with the bulkhead - but perhaps twice as thick as the kit supplied bulkhead. This would be easiest to do before assembling the frame, but even so, one could glue successive pieces roughly the shape needed to each bulkhead - and then sand them when fairing.
Then, as one planked from the bottom up, there would be a 'ledge' to clamp against so there'd be no need for pins or brads even with slower curing glue.

This is not a book that is officially on the market. My son and I made it just for fun.
We hope you like it too.

ulrich reacted to GeorgeKapas in Mahmudiye by GeorgeKapas - FINISHED - 1/350 - Ottoman Ship of the Line
So here the ship is 99% complete. One can in theory remove her from the base and display the ship as full hull model. Since the previous post, some details were added and some changed, like the boats moved further aft etc. A few more pieces were still not added by this point, like boat rudders, etc, but I'll post more of the finished photos later. I added some flags that I printed and painted, the anchors were sourced from my parts heap but reduced in size a bit, the boats are also from parts and have been cut down to scale.

ulrich reacted to Melissa T. in Statenjacht by Melissa T. - FINISHED - Kolderstok - Scale 1:50
I’ve spent the past couple of weeks working on cabin interior details, including planking the cabin decks and walls, installing benches, the fireplace, and the little staircase from the upper deck. I’m using a clear satin spar urethane to finish most surfaces, except for the staircase on which I used a Minwax golden oak stain. The Statenjacht was used mostly for inland waterway transport in the Dutch Republic of VIP passengers, hence the luxury red padding on the benches and the fancy fireplace. This has been very relaxing and enjoyable, and I’m happy with how it’s going at this early stage 😊🇳🇱

ulrich got a reaction from Jeremy vdb in Question about Mantua Sergal 1/78 scale Cutty Sark.
I used all metal parts which are supposed to be used as panels, doors, windows etc. on the deck cabins and hatches as templets to make them out of thin plywood, mahogany, dowels.
The larger pieces with the squares to be cut out are attached to the outside of the upper bulwark topped by the hand rail. (See my pics. here).

Ulrich

There seems to be a dearth of information on binnacle cabinets. This is a replica of a 17th century cabinet from the vessel Nonsuch (found at the Manitoba Museum website).

I just can't wrap my head around the idea of bolt ropes without sails.

thanks everyone for responses, thumbs up and looking.
Rigging and antennas are ready, after some searching, thinking and studying of various photos, I made the antennas as follows.
Only the rigging for the davits of the auxiliary boats, the gangways and the necessary small details remain.
And then, finally, the flags can be placed.
We are almost there but not quite.

ulrich reacted to Morgan in Cannon bolts outbord on french and english 74 gun ships
Only in respect of British ships they are not to be seen on any of the present historic ships, neither are they evident on 19th Century photos or contemporary paintings. They must have been rebated in to the external planking and plugged or set in to the frames, after all exposed metalwork corrodes and the last thing you need to break are the retaining bolts (although they sometimes did).

ulrich reacted to grsjax in Why do some manufacturers make single plank kits?
One advantage to having double planking is that it gives a beginner a chance to learn proper planking techniques without to much worry about botching the final result. Planking the first layer allows for mistakes that can then be covered by a second layer with less chance of mistakes. The key is to try to plank both layers the right way. Not just slap on the first layer and cover it with wood filler.
