    Hi everyone,

Thanks for the nice words about my first attempt.

I just posted several pics in the completed ships section, if you care to visit that would be very kind.

Nigel she looks as she did forty years ago. I attempted, then to "age" her a bit. The stairs for example. I also used an air brush to highlight certain areas with stain, then Watco oil to preserve the wood. The oil was rag applied.

Then finished the rigging. My nineteen year old girlfriend did the sewing for the sails (She's still by my side). The only changes are with some of the rigging which has lost some of its original color and "relaxed a bit. I hesitate to go in and adjust things.

Here are a couple more pics. Thanks for dropping in. Its been almost a time capsule looking ship, hard to believe that it was such a long time ago. A couple for footnotes; I paid $70.00 USD, and I only had sandpaper, a basic Dremel and rarzor blades. Whoa how our hobby has improved with helpful machines. I note that this ship is still being produced today with full color booklet instructions (:-)

OK now back to the Vasa.

    Regards,

    Michael

    Hi everyone,

Well it took about forty years, but I finally took some pics of my first build. Here are a couple of pics. I will put some together and post them in the completed ships section in the next couple of days. I was in my early 20s and it was the Mantua Santa Maria. She has been untouched in all of these years. She held up fairly well.

Oooh, that's brave to put her on the nose Michael. I put the model between my knees when I need a few seconds to fit stern details. And that's enough to make me nervous.

Nice start on the rigging. I like your jig idea.

    I love the TV tray!

I'm trying to convince the admiral that I need a 32" TV to put on the wall in the shipyard.  She's not going for it yet.

I'll be curious to follow your Wasa build as I'm thinking that might be my next major build.

My plan as of right now is to bash the hell out of this Victory kit.  Once it's finished I am going to build the cross section and display them together in the same case.  After that, I'm thinking the Wasa will be next.

Of course by then we may all be living on starships so who knows.

Well, that's something of an improvement - enough to restore your honour at least!

That chair looks pretty comfy, but it's gonna get interesting as the build progresses. I think I'll sit back in my own comfy chair and watch the modelling space evolve with the build. This could be fun!

    Dave,

Thanks for your encouraging post (:-)  though I must say that in the almost one year that I have been a member at MSW, my skill set has shot way way up. Kudos would also go to all of the amazing builds that I follow here, as well as the wealth of insundry topics from which I try to absorb and learn from as well. Discovering tools specific to our hobby was also of great help.

Again thanks, your thoughts are much appreciated.

    Doris,

I am so lucky to have found your work, again, here at MSW. I just spent the most wonderful evening looking through your Royal Caroline log.

I remember discovering your absolutely ridiculously amazing, almost unbelievably beautiful HMS Victory, and your Sovereign of the Seas. I don't remember where, but I have never forgotten it. AND now I (we) discover that you also love model cars, and working on real cars.

You are certainly one of the Wonders of the World. Your work leaves many of us lacking the vocabulary with which to properly articulate and, acknowledge your incredible artistry. What a gift....You are certainly a living legend. Thank you for sharing your work in such detail.

    Regards,

    Hello Everyone,

I became a bit frustrated, so I thought I would share a solution that has certainly been thought of before, but for me, as a "newbie" still reinventing the wheel Hmmmm

I decided to loosely pre-install the ropes into the deadeyes before mounting them to the channels. My first fingered attempt was fated to succumb to an obvious half hour of frustration (first pic). Which was, as it turned out, the catalyst that I needed to head downstairs for some nurturing music as well as something to quench my frustration understandably so - no?.

So, having regained a sense of perspective I dropped any further similar attempts at threading the deadeyes by fingers, and thought that some sort of a jig would be helpful.

Here are some initial photos in this regard. I hope that this post is not redundant for most of you, but I thought that I would none-the-less share. As we all know Never throw out scrap pieces of wood.

    A now more peaceful,

Dave, Yes it seems to be learning step for both of us. This Vasa will be my first attempt at properly rigging and preparing shrouds, and lines with proper wrapping. My first build was a simple beginners ship 40 years ago. So no seasoning help there. As I noted above I'm taking the advice of seasoned artists and I will mount the deadeyes without ropes, adding them after the shrouds are in place.

In you case, at 1/96th, I think that you almost have to pre rig the deadeyes if you plan on using actual ones. They will be soooo small. Your ship is so way beyond Revell's expectations that real deadeyes may be the way to go.

    Regards,

I may try to do the same thing on my United States build.  with so many Connie builds in progress.......I'll be able to see the many different directions folks take.   I've replaced the decks with wood.......and most likely I'll be doing the same to the masts.  looks like I'll have the  'spare parts'  your referring to      I tried to talk the admiral into letting me get a Connie kit......but she told me I was insane!  man........I hate it whenever she's right

Thank you Frank. In all honesty I have mixed feelings with the machine. I have to say it makes very nice rope, but I get tired pretty soon when doing it.
You need to have both hands at work and your attention and eyes fixed on the area where the rope is twisting, so you can control the speed at which your right hand turns the take up spool.
I have another machine, but this one makes only short segments of rope. About 1.30 mts. So you need to load the machine several times to make enough rope of a given thickness. Byrnes machine shines at making a continuous rope, limited only by the amount of thread you load in the spools.

Hope this helps. If you have any more questions, please ask!
