    Hi Jim

Very nice! Have you given any thought as to how you're going to display her? I'm thinking in a large blacked out cabinet with some strategically placed overhead lights to highlight the beauty of the whole structure (my thoughts only, of course).

    Cheers

Thank you a lot John and Patrick for your kind words. And all the "likes" as well! You don't know how much this means to me!
Patrick, I don't know yet if I am building a protective case for the model, it depends where I am going to place her, into the bookshelf or at the warehouse corner to gather dust.
But so much have I enjoyed the building of her, that there must be a follower. Otherwise life proves to be too boring with nothing else to do at evenings than watching TV.

What, how, when???? Matti, you've finished her already? I blink my eyes for one minute and look what happens.....

In all seriousness, I have to say that you've done one hell of a brilliant job! Are you also building a case to protect her?

Lastly, yes, I'm also looking forward to your next subject.

Just to tease you all, the next set of parts arrived last night!

I've now been able to add Saturn to the build and as per the real thing it looks awesome. It has also highlighted just how large this build is going to be with another four arms still to go. With that in mind a new set of wider 'feet' were provided to keep the orrery upright. In addition, all the brass grub screws have now been upgraded to steel to avoid any stripping issues when adjusting the arms.

I'll follow up with images tonight / tomorrow morning.

Good to hear the good news Dave!  Fixing that hole in your ear drum is a piece of cake, a small piece of catgut and CA and presto, a new eardrum

Hi Frank, George, Mark.... good to be back in the shop this evening for sure.

Tried that one Piet.... began growing long whiskers and licking my paws.  Pretty sure it had something to do with the cat gut plug.  Also tried to plug it with a dowel....didn't work either, just made the hole bigger.  Guess I'll have to go with my hero Dr. P on this one.

Lost about 70% in that ear DaveB.... should get a good bit of that back after repair surgery.  It's been so long now, I hardly notice it during the day.

Omega1234 reacted to Piet in Surabaya by Piet - 1/80 - Mid 17th-Century VOC ship
Between the yard work and some other chores I managed to spend some time in the shipyard.  Yesterday I started with making some simple scroll work for the head rail carving pieces.  I had some 1 mm boxwood planing and drew a simple figure on it to lay on top of the figure's head mounting piece.  Then I thought why not make a simple wavy thing for the sides.

So, with my trusty sharpened #11 blade, a 1 mm drill bit, and a dental burr I managed to carve two sets out.  I even tried to make the top piece look like twisted open rope.

I forgot to make the side pieces curved so they are soaking in water overnight so I can bend them into a fitting curve.

I asked Gwen (who doesn't want to be called Admiral) about what colors to make these pieces.  I wanted to have the actual mounting pieces in yellow ocher.  She suggested black for the scrolls, which would off-set nicely on the yellow.  She also mentioned red or green to match the other trim colors but I thought dark oak like I have on the whales and the slats in the head railing.

So, this after noon I painted the mounting pieces in yellow ocher and stained the scrolls in oak.  I have to let everything dry, bend the side scrolls and stain them before I can cement them on.
I show the the pics when they are mounted to the head railings some other day.  Still have a lot of yard work to do so it'll be a day or so.

All the parts are ready for stain, paint and assembling them together.  I even fiddled with the heads some to improve their shape;e a little.

A close-up for yuns to see my effort in making the larger scroll look like a loosely twisted piece of rope.

    Cheers,

Why Piet ... some simple scroll work ... quite ... it may look simple, my friend, but it certainly is not creating it ... especially with an eleven blade like you do ... Marvelous !!!

    Cheers
