I have also been working on the roof of the hanger that contains the boat deck, this is the area where the Fritz bomb hit near to the funnel, so I decided to fit a armour plate over the entry hole from the bomb, also in the same area - both sides of the funnel are two vents that needed roof overhangs, these were constructed from thin card then placed and painted to correspond with the deck dark grey color. Here are a few pics of this area plus a dry fit of it ontop of the hanger. OC.

Quite a bit of work done today, I carried on working in the hanger bay - I decided to populate it with a couple of boxes, and also fitted a walkway, after the glue had set I applied a bit of paint, then it was time to fit the open hanger section to the other side, at the same time I trimmed part of the roller door down, and fitted it, then I dry fitted it to the lower frame. I then dry fitted both on the deck to see how it looks. Here are a few pics. OC.

Great work there greg, the different colors in the camo really set each other off, was the super structures all masked up and sprayed or any hand painting there? OC.

It does indeed lou, I value your research and anything you can throw into the mix and help me with my build - is invaluable, the same goes for all my other friends on here, imput and bits and pieces of info make this site what it is and brings me to the site everyday. OC.

No its fine lou, its all relevant regarding the bombs that attacked ships including the ole girl, I reserched it to find out what repairs would have been noticable on my build at DDay, I have narrowed it down to - a possible patch on the boat deck next to the funnel, a patch under the bottom of the hull (these two were the entrance and exit holes) and also a comcrete casemant that was attached to the inside starboard hull, but this had a fresh section of torpedo bulge added over the top. OC.

Very interesting ship and makes building her even more correct for me is having once visited her last resting place (well scrapping place) OC.

More goodies I have seen that I would love to get to super detail my build - Love North Star goodies, at this rate I will have to re mortgage the house to pay for all these model bits and pieces. OC.

Indeed my friend, I think the ole girl was very lucky mind you many accounts from sailors who served in her, said she was a lucky ship, look at what happened with her demise - she didn't want to be scrapped so she rammed herself on some rocks in Cornwall England. OC.

Next stage - work on the hanger insides, I will be keeping one side closed and one side patialy open and will keep a ships boat inside, as no aircraft where kept onboard after late 1943. OC.

Bit more work today during the thunderstroms - I have built the lower section of the hanger along with a couple of ammo cupboards, and a pe door or two, then I gave the assembly a couple of coats of mid grey, and on the top a few coats of dark grey. I have also emptied the Oerlikon tubs and gave them a tidy up ready for when I can save up for the beauties shown above. Here are a few pics. OC.

This is a photo (courtosy of the internet) of the exact aerial recon of the attack from the plane who dropped the bombs on the ole girl. OC.

Yep three where dropped on/near warspite - one missed and caused no damage, one exploded on her starboard side and opened up her torpedo bulge, but the main one was a direct hit, it entered on her hanger boat deck next to her funnel, it went straight through three floors and exploded in one of the engine rooms (destroying the entire engine room) and exited through her bottom hull, she took on 5000 tons of water but managed to lock the water tight doors and limped to crete near greece.

Thanks mate, I do like the look of those pre-built Oerlikons by shapeways, think they would look the business. OC.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
