Having been a Gunners Mate aboard the Ammen DD 527, this Johnston video adds to my respect of the Fletcher Class Destroyers and their crews. Considered it an honor to have served with WW2 and Korean War Veterans getting close to retirement. “Rocks and Shoals Navy”, is no more.

I had heard about this privateer and wondered what she looked like. I was thinking perhaps the "four masted ship" was like the Continental Frigate Hancock, which had a small lateen steering sail on her taffrail mounted ensign staff! But nope. This is a true four master! Lovely. And wow.

I think the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Era ships were amongst the most beautiful men of war ever built.

Congratulations on yet another fine monograph, Gérard! This looks like a fascinating subject. Coincidentally, I was in Bordeaux last week. Lovely city buildings of the same era....

    Hello,

I am pleased to announce you the publication of my twelfth monograph which is about a four-masted privateer ship: "L'Invention". Built in Bordeaux in 1799/1800, she is of an innovative design for the time with her pioneering hull design with very tapered lines and her unique four-masted rigging. These major innovations were far ahead of the clippers that would follow her a few decades later. It presents the characteristics of ships specifically built to be armed as privateers. Booklet 23x31cm, 130 pages and 34 large format plans.
Available in English translated by Anthony Klouda, Editions ANCRE.

In the 1795 flag act the two extra stars and stripes were added for Kentucky and Vermont. Tennessee (1796) and Ohio (1803) Louisiana (1812) entered as states, however no new flag act was established. Various unofficial flags were flown with the additional stars and stripes.  The United States flag was fifteen stars and stripes throughout the war of 1812. In 1818 Congress decreed that one star would be added for each state on the 4th of July following statehood, and there was to be thirteen stripes to represent the 13 original states. There was no standard pattern for the arrangement of the stars until 1912.

Just finishing up Amati's kit of an American Gunboat from the War of 1812 and I'm dealing with the flag now.

FYI, this is a lateen rigged row galley that Amati calls the "Arrow" and bills it as a gunboat from the Battle of Lake Champlain. It is straight out of one of Chapelle's books, and apparently it may or may not have actually been built, but is a very interesting subject and has been a fun build.

While I plan to make my own flag, I have the flag included in the kit, and it brings up the issue of a "proper" naval flag for the War of 1812. I've searched various online sources and don't see anything like this one, which shows 17 stars and 13 strips.

It seems the US had 18 states at start of the war, with Louisiana becoming the 18th state in April of 1812.

I would have attributed this difference to kit manufacturer error, which does happen. But, then it occurred to me that the most famous American flag, the "Star Spangled Banner" that flew over Fort McHenry, had only 15 stars (and 15 stripes). And, that seems to be the dominant configuration for any flag shown of the War of 1812.

I know there was no real standardization of the American flag, and these things were hand made, and not to my knowledge by a "flag maker", but by seamstresses. Still, I have to wonder why it was made the way it was. Was there a conversation like: "How many states are there now? Ugh, one can hardly keep track of these things – they keep letting in more and more of them... Well, this one's just going to have to have 15. I'm certainly not going to redo it for the paltry sum we're getting paid."

Anyway, I could certainly make a 15-star, 15-stripe flag with this gunboat, but I was wondering if anyone has more definitive info about it?

the spaces used were huge!  One does wonder how the huge frames were lofted for the 74's. And ships like them.  The wood was huge!

    Bruce,
This is my first true scratch for a wood from plans. Any help is ALWAYS appreciated. The plans showed me the underside of the main deck and I subtracted a microscopic amount from that prior to cutting the bulkheads. I freely admit that the guys in my club make this look FAR easier than it really is but even if this only goes this far I have already gotten over my apprehension of "lofting" bulkheads from plans.
The stern looks like the most daunting part right now as the stern chine follows the sheer pretty boldly. In many of the books I have seen the ships had a gun deck so the stern seemed easier. I think I am probably worrying over nothing but I will collide with that bridge when I get there! 😀

I've read that it's a good tone wood for lutherie, but not widely used for that because of its lack of reliable availability. It's considered a good wood for fine carving.

Avocado has a noticeable grain that may not look appropriate on a model.  It is a nice wood for carving and other decorative uses.
