Building a Medieval fortress - by Waitoa - Del Prado 1/87
Kevin replied to Waitoa's topic in Non-ship/categorised builds
Good Morning Waitoa just been through your build, and i am learning by my mistakes just as you did, however a few of my mistakes could have been avoided by looking through the instructions, oh hum, a good example is the filing of each layer to keep a constant level, i am now doing that, but have more than one wall going on at the same time to allow more building, my success with corners is hit and miss, the 90 degree ones are not to bad, its the ones where cutting different angles is required loving your work -
good evening everyone day 2 well i made a start yesterday, the card templates are of good quality, instructions are a bit like the CAF, just illustrations of the basics, i will learn more from watching the build logs on here and of course there is you tube the tiles are set diameter, but the lengths vary, like the 5mmx5mm of which there are 000's vary from 2mm to about 15mm you you have plenty of choice to pick the size required lots of sanding, some decent file sticks and sandpaper are the main things used so far, the supplied glue, is very much like a decent paper/wood glue, the 1/2 round building was hard to get the shape right so i made up a couple of 1mm bulkheads, which worked very well i am learning as i go along, like all of my builds you can tell where i started, i am sure there will be help and advice as i plod along, im happy to listen

thank you, seams like a lifetime ago since i completed her, but was only 5 months, and i am already on my 3rd uncompleted project, but like the Bismarck, Victory and this, they all get done in the end, and as soon as i restart, i wonder why i left it in the first place

What do I want for Christmas
Kevin replied to Worldway's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
change of plans, the wife must be reading this, and actually asked me that question today there is a few caveats though, she wants me to build something that wont take 7 years, must be completed, and fit on a shelf, so that rules out @chris watton 1/48 Royal George -
good evening everyone Day 66 fore 1/2 deck thank you for comments and pointers, im loving this build, im in day 60 odd and not thought about any other build, not even the Bluejacket schooner that might be on sale this time next years (not thought about that much at all) (but dont ask the wife, she will lie to you lol) using 5mm lime strips the fore 1/2 deck has now been planked, at present i am sorting out the forward bulkhead, and making up the bulkheads for the sail room, and carpenter store

how about a miller, i recently bought the Proxxon MF-70 for myself, i dont need anything, so will go without this year i will purchase another build like the new CAF Grando, or the under development Bluejacket (begins with a W) but i may be ready by then to do the Triton scratch -
Bradley good morning the wood quality is very good, and well lasered, requiring very little to remove the parts from the billets, the after sales is excellent, Tom really understands the service he supplies, a few bits have been replaced without issue i have not looked at the actual metal parts/windows yet, and have them locked away to stop me playing with them, as i decided to do this in some sort of order Plans are 1/1 and well drawn, instructions are basic, and most if the text is in Chinese, but with a couple of builds under your belt the drawings become self explanatory there are some build logs out on the web, but they belong to a site where the bad boys from here go (mainly building pre licienced kits or on the MSW banned list (hope you know what i mean) the kit an be supplied in 3 parts the kit is not that expensive for what you get and the time taken to build posting and packing is expensive, as the covid is restricting/dictating cost of available carriers, this is doubled by the time the import duties are added the cost, depends an how you rate a kit a rough estimate puts my build at about £900 total (including p+P and duties) there are no books that cover this class of ship, but the Pandora book is about as close as you will get. recommended by me

Good evening everyone day 64 fore 1/2 deck supports having learnt lessons from the pointy end, today i manged to do what took two weeks making a level 1/2 deck i traced a deck beam onto a piece of plasticard, and temp glued it to the beam , the beam was then put into position and held with clips whilst a deck support was shaped to fit under it, this support was glued and pinned and the deck beam with card removed, this was repeated twice, then two strips of wood placed between the new supports provided a template to fix another 3 beams in place without any issues

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
