Nirvana reacted to druxey in HMS Pegasus 1776 by Trussben - 1:48 - Swan-class sloop based on TFFM
See my illustration of a fixed block. I only found this out from the extract of the draught shown a couple of years ago. It makes sense for repair when necessary.

Thanks Rusty and Druxey,
what do you mean by ears druxey?

Good to see the hull growing, Ben, even if it is slowly. Don't forget to add the 'ears' on the fixed block later.

Very nice work Ben. Glad to see you back at it.
Work sucks but does give us the funds to do what we love!

Hi, it's been a long time since an update due to a very heavy load working away so little modeling time to be had.
Another set of eight frames and a spacer frame have been installed up to B Aft, if you look closely you will see the rough cut out in the A-Frames for the fixed double block, and below the hull you can see the block bodies that have been made out of boxwood to match the hull planking when it's done.
The frames are just roughly faired and sanded to 100 grit just like the rest of the hull until hull is closed in.
So 16 frames are left to go to fill the gap, hopefully it won't be as long until the next update.

The planking looks great. Your doing a fantastic job. You might find a sail plan in American Sailing Ships by Howard Chappell. You should be able to pick up a used copy on ebay or Amazon for a few bucks. If the info is not there it's a great reference and good reading anyway. You should be able to find a sail plan somewhere or use the sail plan of a similar vessel of the period as a guide.

Glad to see that you are back to work on your AVS. I have one that is begging me to finish it. Planking looks nice. You will be fine just sanding out the gun port to its correct size. It will be covered up by the interior bulwark planking.

Thanks for all the likes!
After a busy summer, I have been able to spend some time on my AVS. I have completed the first layer of planking above the wales. This was pretty straightforward with no major issues. The only issue I did have was I found the knightshead and timberhead on the port side were not shaped right. So I had to add some extra wood to the front of them. After fairing these down, I was much happier with the run of the planks at the bow. I still need to go back and clean up the gunports.
I did notice one of my bulkheads is not straight during this process. This is causing one of my gun ports to be slightly too small. Everything else looks to be lined up correctly and its just this bulkhead that is misaligned. Hopefully the pictures show what I am talking about. The white arrows are indicating the difference. Measuring the distance for the black arrows is identical as well as to the stern. This is why I believe it is just this bulkhead that is not correct. For a fix I think I can just sand out the port to match the rest and this will be OK.
Am I correct in this thought process?

I touched up with varnish the hull where I had to sand the old varnish away so I could glue on the side badges.

Keep on swinging. If it was easy anybody could do it.

Now let me bring you up to speed on my current progress and share my huge disappointment and the beginnings of my recovery.
So first let me describe what I have learned from other logs and my planking experience. I will also comment that this is the 4th time I have done a hull planking and it is still the part of the vessel that I struggle with the most. Knowing this I would not have started the Syren unless I knew ahead of time that I was going to copper the hull and hide most of my efforts.
I have also learned that some members of the Syren club did their planking before the counter. I now feel this is the proper solution. I have several errors here and so I decided to cut away some of the counter planks and most of the stern ends of the hull planks. Then redo this part of my hull. The first 3 pictures are before I began repairs. The last 3 pictures is my attempt to recover. I will be struggling with the recovery for most of this week.
I suggest to anyone at this stage that filling in with more than just the 2 horizontal and 2 vertical shaped Pieces is advisable. I will be doing that this time. Thus I will have a good gluing surface.

Bluenose ll was built using the same lines and design of Bluenose l. Going to their site you can find many images that will help. Once you get to the deck lot's of images help.
Cheers

Dave,
We had a great time at The Foss.
The progress of your scratch build is coming together quick. I hope you can meet the deadline.😀
My project is almost done, and I will be uploading pictures with a build log in the next day or two.

I have been working on cabin details since these will be installed before the deck. I build and installed the bench structure but have not cut out the swing portion of the seat (sitting loose in the photo). The space beneath the bench stores the battery and other gear that doesn't mind getting dirty or wet. Since this is effectively bilge space items will get wet so the battery was contained in a fiberglass enclosure.
I also made some plugs to see how they would look. I damages one on (temporary) installation and will have to make a new one. I am continuing with the front seats and forward details. Will have pictures as I install them.
We returned to the Foss Waterway museum today so I got a picture of the boat with "daddy". A rice bag protects the hull and makes a fair working support.

Nirvana reacted to slow2cool in Painting a Waterline
I would paint the hull white, the whole hull
Then I would mark the water line.
Then tape and cover the white paint, then paint black.

Rich,
Wow, I go away for a short spell and I have an entire book to read to catch up!! Well done Sir, well done. I love the comb idea for your grating, will have to remember that one.
Your side badges look much better than the kit parts, I would use those first if it was me. If, however you still do not like them check out Chucks Chelsea(?) log. He demonstrates building either galleries or badges, I forget now but I remember getting all sorts of tips there. They are not terribly difficult to build, just fiddly. Either way whatever you do will look great like always.
Sam
BTW, since I most likely will not be around here on November 10, Happy Birthday!

Here's the best I can do with making new side badges. I'll look at them for a while and make a decision as to put them on the ship or not. There is no way I would put the junky badges the kit provided.

Mike,
You are absolutely right having someone else looking over instructions. Daria would probably have prevented this from the start.....😀
