Glad to see some progress Mick. Nice work as usual.

Oh, can you tell us about that little brass plane? It looks like the perfect tool for model work.

Hi alde

Thanks for dropping by

Its nice to make some headway.....dont seem to get much time these days.

The little brass plane is a small thumb plane or more correctly a luthiers plane.

I will upload some more photos.

I think the brand name is e.s.e

Its only 1 1/4 inchs long by 1/2 inch wide.

Cant remember where i got it from.....definitely  pre internet days.

Cheers...mick

violin builder planes. I've been eyeing them, but they are expensive, since I'm temporarily into plastic builds, it stays at eyeing for now ... ;)

That is some serious fiddly work on the hinges, Mick. Doesn't look like brass much ... is it?

Hi carl

Violin planes,good ones anyway,are pricey.....ibex is a good brand

Steer clear of some of the far eastern stuff...some are good but most are dodgy.

Well spotted its not brass but copper...easier to work and easier to blacken eith liver of sulpher.

I shall make the anchors from copper as well

Still bending impossibly small bits of brass?

Cheers for now....mick

Hi all

On a slightly different note a lovely slab of beech arrived the other morning for the new workbench.

Still got to make some drawers for the left and right sides.....vacuum lived in the middle!

Bench top is 2m in length.....plenty of space for tools!

Just waiting for the danish too dry.

Cheers.....mick

not much "at work"

it's a rather contrasting view mate ... tidy on the one side ... a bit messy on the other ... the latter looks more like a spot in use ... although the part about the genius ... ;)

hi all

the saga of the hinges continues

the first attempt with copper was not entirely successful so decided to switch back to brass.

the hinges are nearly done ...just a load of 0.5 mm holes to drill....a lot of cleaning up and then to blacken

photos enclosed as per usual

Hi paul

The hinges are 1/16  by 1/32 brass strip silver soldered to 1/16 od brass tube.

The pins are 1/16 brass rod soldered to the same diameter tube , the tube then filed to the width of the rod.

The two are connected by a 0.8mm diameter brass rivet which is cut off and the end peinned over with a small hammer.

The hinge will be glued to the gunport with epoxy and smaller rivets dropped through the holes to represent bolt heads.

The pin will locate into the hull.

Hope this helps

Cheers.....mick

Hi mick

Thanks it was the rivet part I was interested in, I couldn't work out if it was a nail trimmed off and peened on one end, did you anneal the rivet to make it more workable

Again Nice work at that size

Paul
