Ahh, I will have a look. Maybe I will be able to get it on Sunday, but that is Mother's Day, so maybe not.

Get the smallest can you can find. It doesn't take much.

Were you planning on staining or painting? I ask because if you are painting you may not need the sealer. You will want primer. But then you've got the decision of what type of paint? Some primers do better with certain types of paint. Also primer comes in several colors. You'll want a white primer for lite colors, gray for medium or dark colors. The primer will seal the wood. Several coats, sanding in between.

Aaaaaaannnnnd, Tada! I did it! Finally! That took a while! Wow, that's probably the largest single step in the build so far! I accidently made the area to support the keel and sternpost a but too thin, but I will fix that after I fit the keel on. That way it will be flush with the hull. I have a little more sanding to do on the stem post before it is done. After the keel installation is deck carving, as well as the indent in the bulwarks. Then probably scupper carving, bowsprit slot, and hull planking! I have a lot to do!

Nice lines on the hull Elijah :)

I always thought if you bought a solid hull kit that the hull would be ready to build on, but not in this case it seems. Good job with all that sanding :)

That hull does look great! All that sanding will pay off for you when you start planking.

Thanks for the comments guys! I was wondering, since I'm planking the hull, will the rudder need to be a little wider? I'm thinking I will try to build it the same way I have been making the stem post. I noticed that the grating in the kit is way to large, and the one shown in the plans is almost impossibly small, so I think I will try to 3D print it. Anyway, you can probably tell that a lot is going through my head :D!

Elijah, Your hull sure has a nice shape to it. You did a great job fairing it in. It takes a lot of patience but it looks like you have it.

Is your rudder planked already or is it just the wood cut out? I have always had to plank over the blank rudder that is supplied with the kit and doing so has kept it the same width as the stern post after it is planked.

I haven't made it yet, and there is no laser cut cutout. You have to make it yourself. Does the sternpost get planked over?

I guess it would depend on the material it is made out of. Also when I say plank, it was more of a veneer covering. I used wide strips of the same mahogany that I planked my hull with to cover the stern post so that it looks like it is one large piece of the same wood as the hull. Otherwise I would have had an ugly strip of the supplied ply wood showing.

In your case since you get to make it from scratch you can build the whole thing out of whatever material you wish. I believe that most rudders are the same thickness to just slightly smaller than then the stern post. They also tend to taper to a narrower edge than what is at the hinge pins. Hopefully someone can confirm this or correct me if I am wrong.

I will be planking the hull with cherry veneer, but it will be painted and coppered.

I did a little searching real quick to familiarize myself more with your ship. From what I have been able to gather and since you are planning to copper the hull, it looks like the rudder should be close to the same thickness as your stern post. This would include the copper plating which appears to cover the rudder as well.

Nice work, Elijah.

To respond to your interrogatories, the stern post and rudder would not be planked. The stern post serves to relieve the ends of the planking (see rabbett), but the copper plating would continue around the post and the rudder would also get coppered .

Elijah, she is looking great. You did a fantastic job on getting the hull nice and smooth. Planking can be a lot of fun once you get your head around how it works. There are a number of great books as well as short papers on this and other sites on exactly how to do it. Just like when you started faring the solid hull, there are unique challenges/skills to learn in this step, as there will be on every step of the ship.

Keep up the great work.

Your hull turned out beautifully.  I attempted  a solid hull kit  (Newsboy)  many years ago, but never got beyond completing the hull because fairing to the proper profile was so difficult.  You have learned very quickly and your work is first-rate.  You've got a bright future in our hobby.  Keep it up!

Thanks everybody for the compliments and answers! I will be attempting to finish and install the keel tonight. It getting done depends on how much time I can scavenge. I will have pictures when it is done/glueing!

The keel and sternpost are being installed. The sternpost was already installed, but the keel is glueing. The last thing to glue is the stempost. Maybe I will be able to glue it Wednesday. I guess it is time to start the rudder, deck carving, bulwark thinning, and planking!
