What can they fire with it ?????

Sjors: Thank you. I think they fired 3 pounds of cast iron? And I think they shot them at the Polish mostly... 

 

A parcel from Hobbyzone in Poland came today! In it was:

daddyrabbit: I just tested the plank bender and it works like a charm. Not too expensive either...

Oh that sounds all too familiar!

 

But so far the Admiral here is in full support of my wood adventure...she even asks about the progress I make. Never happened with plastic!

Although...today I had to explain why her white blouse got ruined by a dirty steam iron. 

 

Tip: always clean the iron after you use it for plank bending!

Heavy is good IMHO as it gives a nice stable base for the hull.

Not much good for me at the moment though with my Endeavour as there is no stem fitted till much later on so there is nothing for the Bow end of the slipway to hold on to. Might get one later once the stem has been fitted

The Vasa will also be in that state. Planks first, then keel and stem etc. But I thought I'd fit something temporary to hold the hull. We shall see if I can come up with something by then...

Still haven't decided if I should do the eyes or not on the knights. Could be a lot of extra work repainting if I don't get it right...

The knights have the same body in the kit to keep cost down I guess.

Maybe they put them all there to make the enemy feel guilty about firing cannon balls at them

They could have kept a couple of wood carvers busy almost nonstop had that ship ever gotten into a fight repairing the damage to all those figures. I guess if you didn't have anyone skilled enough to re-carve them you would look even more terrifying chasing ships with an army of headless people strapped to the sides of your hull. 

 

Excellent job on the painting. I don't know if the eyes are that important. Maybe try one or two and decide if the results are worth the risk and effort.

I tried it on the first knight. After a few tries he ended up looking a little terrified. Think I'll skip the eyes on the knights...

Painting eyes isn't the easiest job, but with a good approach it's doable.

 

Ignore the flesh colour around the eyes at first...don't try to fit the eye in...that wont work.

 

1. a horizontal line of off ivory or cream (don't use pure white). 

2. a thin vertical line of black through the centre of the eye.

3. a very thin brown wash (will show the shape of the eye).

4. a thin line of flesh colour above and underneath the eye...follow the shape of the eye.

 

With a little practise...you get the hang of it soon enough

I recommend searching the Internet for wargaming figure tutorials. Dr. Faust is good. I paint LOTS of figures. Below 1/48 scale you can skip the eyes. However, I strongly recommend what is called the three layer painting process. For example:

 

Block paint the face a red brown or brown.

Highlight with a mix of the brown base and flesh.

Final, lesser highlight with pure flesh.

 

For the Knights, if they have black armor,

base coat black.

Highlight dark charcoal (3:1 black to white)

Final highlight is slate color ( 2:1 or 1:1 black to white mix)

 

Can do same layer process for other colors. Process adds depth and makes it pop.

 

You can also ink the figure after simple block painting to add relief. It is quicker. However it deadens the colors, particularly red and white. I would only do it if in a rush.

I thank you all for the painting tips. Unfortunately it's throwing pearls before swine in my case since I'm colorblind and everything with a hint of green or red in it is a muddy mess in my eyes. 

 

Don't forget that the knights face is only 3 mm. As for all the figures on the Vasa they are originally wood carved figures painted in the early 1600's and actually quite "primitive" in their coloring. I used gun metal for the armor, even that is over the top since it should be plain black. But I like the shine of gun metal.

 

I like building ships since the coloring was simple, mostly red ochre, black, yellow ochre and sometimes a little blue. More than that I'm lost. So this build will be only the simplest of coloring. My approach is like paint by numbers    if the instructions says brown, I pick the bottle that says brown

Colour blindness must be a great problem for you with parts of this hobby. However you seem to overcome it and do a really good job with your painting. Remember it's your build and as long as you are happy with it then that's the main thing. Keep up your good work

At last the October parts have arrived!

Only 3 decorations this time, The only instructions are for the little statue. The ring I have done earlier But the frame for the cherubs will have to wait until later when DeAgostini will give instructions.

 

 

Not much for €25. Guess there is about 2,5 to 3 hours of fun here, including time for the glue to dry!

Nothing much to get too exited about, but this was the first part of the build that gave a small technical challenge with some parts had to be bent in different  directions.
