Baby Bootlegger by Gerhardvienna - 1/10 - Radio

I hope you are well, my friend

There are a few of us at age 50+ in "non grown boys" group who ride motobike direct to surgery :D :D ;)

I have learned my lesson four years ago, cutting my leg to bone... Do you?

Hi friend

Well, not cut to bones, but my knees were both hit really hard, so it took a long time for rehab. But riding bikes is what I`m addicted to, beneath model making.

Gerhard,

It's wonderful that you're back.  I had to go Google the V8 solenoid engine.  One impressive bit of hardware.  I take it that these are all basically scratch-built?  I noticed that they're producing some of the parts using a 3D printer.

Hi Mark

all of these engines I`ve seen are scratchbuilt, I will have to do my own one, in correct size to the original one. The housings will be 3D printed as I will have my printer next spring. I will construct the engine on the PC with 3D-Cad, transfer the files to .stl format and print them then. It`s a lot of planing work to do, I`ll keep you informed, of the next and ongoing steps.

Regards

Gerhard

As I meant above, here are the first steps of drawing work for the engine. The housung is only 82mm long, short enough to fit into the narrow hull of the Bootlegger.

Beneath the drawings I had to build a solenoid winding machine, I made a simple hand driven item, most important part of it is the counter. This is needed when more than one solenoid is to make, all MUST have the same number of windings!

What a fun project.  Will the case be clear plastic so you can watch the crank shaft turn?

Bob

Hi Bob

The cases will be made from red or green ABS or some better material, the engine stays hidden under the lid. I hope it will have enough torque to drive the boat in good speed!

now this is what I'd call scratch   ;)

Hello popeye

It took a few minutes to saw all that stuff, and some hours to glue and dry it. Now that little machine works fine, after I had to make some improvements as the bar in the front. I have made some coils for another engine (Inline 8) they all look good and have the same reststance of around 22 Ohm.

Fantastic... now you're dragging ship building into electronics manufacturing.   :D  :D  :D    Really, I'm in awe.  That is just super.

Hi Mark

Thank you!!! There is much more of drawing work to do, so many parts still missing for a working engine. Later the day i will post some new pics from that constructin drawings, when all is done I will have to change them all to .stl format to get the parts printed. Even this will take time, I`ll get finished with it when my 3D printer is in my store.......

Here we go on..............

Next things to plan was the front end of the engine, with all the electrical steering parts. The power comes from a battery, goes though the sliders and drives the pistons by magnetism from the coils. As two coils are driven by one circiut, I need 4 switches. Two of them are set ni front of the other two, so there is no chance to get a short circuit when the engine is running.

And the front lid is also drawn now, next will be the "cylinder" head covers, lengthen the crancshaft to correct length, and trying to draw all the wires I need.

Hi Gerhad

I'm totally lost but amazed at what you're doing.

While I don't understand the journey, I'm looking forward to the destination; ie seeing the engine running!

Cheers

Patrick

Hi Patrick

Thank you, I know you will understand the journey soon, the destination is close to this one, but bigger

Hi to all of you out there :)

Today I could make the last drawings of so called important parts, including the circuit diagram for the V8. Some more "optical" parts still missing, the mean work is done!

The switches for the cylinders, each switch is used for two coils as the numbers show

Hi & back again with more from the Cad - works

The engine is drawn complete, next to do is to transform all the single parts into printable .stl files. I must save the complete Cad-file in the correct store place and then make for every part a new file. This is a lot of work to do, but for now here come the next photos.

The engine with its measure, all measures in 1/10th mm

Hi Carl

Thank you, but still a long way to go! The exhaust and carb manifold are just "for fun", they dont have any function. But the whole engine looks better with it. Whilst I`m waiting for my 3D printer, I will continue with the hull, the transforming of the files to printable format will be done in the evenings.

Regards & thank you all for watching again!
