Hola amigos:

Little more than year and a half I finished model VASA (Billing Boats) and after spending time with my other hobby (oil painting, which I do during the temperate months) I started with the Pride of Baltimore II. It must be admitted that this delay is due in part to my wife always makes me the comment: And where are you going to put this new ship?

In principle, this model seems much simpler than the Vasa, especially because the Vasa came with practically no instructions at all and only a couple of blueprints while the POB seems to overdo indications and blueprints (6). However, like all the models that I have built so far, there are some missing or unclear indications and it is necessary to use your own  judgment and imagination, a situation that makes it more interesting the construction of these kits.

Also it is important to mention the great help and tips obtained in Forums like MSW.  For this particular case I follow with interest the topics of jcoby, Mark (Blue Pilot) and  Andy (Andymech).

I begun the POB around a month ago and here can you find some advances:

At this point it is important to mention that is better to make a light beveled and give the finished when placing the planks

Hola:

Continuing with the POB construction:

In the first two pictures you can see the installation of the Planksheer, and as some of you mention, it seems to be a little shorter at the stern but I left it so to see what happen later.

Here yo can see that I exceed in the beveling of some Bulkheads and it must to be corrected

post-797-0-75224800-1475004687_thumb.jpg

Next, I decided to paint the Planksheer because it seems more easy to do it know than later

Hola:

Apparently nobody is watching my posts, probably because this is not a very popular ship whatever the reason.  Anyway I will continue putting my advances on the Forum.

Here I show my next steps:

After painting I put the 3 wales below the planksheer and also begun planking the keel or lower portion, including the stealers as shown in the blueprints (Note the nib ends of these planks):

post-797-0-09671300-1475170995_thumb.jpg

Below the wales I continue with the planking. By the way, the number of planks that are shown in the drawings are not the actual number according to the width of the planks provided (20 to 22 against 17).

It is to notice that for the bow I prefer to make a curve plank than trying to bent the plank

You only started the log 4 days ago.  Be patient, it takes time for build logs to develop a following.  Not everyone checks the forum every day, and many people don't look for new logs on a regular basis as there are just so many going on.  I clicked on this one because I actually love this ship and plan to build it myself some day, and I know there are a few other logs going on, so I don't think it is an unpopular ship at all.

In any case, looks like you have a good start, and I'll try to check in once in a while to watch the progress, but my time has been quite limited recently, so no guarantees!

Have fun building her, she's got fantastic lines.  I use the PoB II as my desktop background on my PC.  :)

I have been working on building the POB II for the past, oh, 16 years. Raising kids has gotten in the way. I currently don't have a build log, but I recently started documenting what I am doing so I can better re-create a blog when I get around to it.

I think it's a great ship! and super convenient that it is contemporary, so you can actually take photos of how it currently looks and use that information. I'm not one for doing lots of research into how something may have looked in the past.

I'll be following along!

Dear Gunther MT:

You're right, maybe I have been a little ahead with the comment that few people see my topic, maybe what caused me the comment were 3 things:

1) Age: at my age (70)  the feeling of time becomes shorter, and is difficult to discern if something happens yesterday or a week ago, ha,ha,ha !!!
2) The number of people who are doing the POB is now quite less than the other models I've built (actually in the Forum I do not see more than 5)
3) In my previous topics for the first week I  had at least 5 or 6 responses.

Anyway I appreciate your comment and I must become more patient

Hola jdbondy:

Hope you can find enough time to continue with the POB, but I know how much time need to be spending when you have kids at home.  Actually I had to postpone my hobby for 50 years!!!!

Karl,

Another thing that would help to bring people to your log is if you put a link to the log in your signature.  Currently you have links to your finished ships in the Gallery, and to the Vasa log, but the "Pride of Baltimore II" at the bottom of your signature is not a link, so there is no way for people who see it in your signature if you post elsewhere on the forums to follow it to your build log.

Of course, if you aren't posting anywhere else, then that won't help at all.   :P

Hey Karl. Better late then never. I just found out you were building this ship, and that's because your phone call this morning. :)

I will be following!!! :)

Here you can see that I added two drop strakes near the bow in order to maintain the plank wide to an acceptable size

And finally I sand all the ship´s hull

Hola:

Now I follow doing the counter and part of the transom:

As you can see I made a base for the ship to work more comfortably

My first step to begin planking the deck was to paint one edge dark brown with a little wood caulk to simulate the caulking in the seams.

Hola:

Following with the construction, I proceed to do the main rail according to the plans:

Now with the use of some blocks that were cut to the appropriate high I began installing the bulwark stanchions:

Here you can see that the hawse timbers were put in place, including the hawsing pipe , using for that purpose  little pieces of aluminium tubing

Before to add the bulwark I decided to paint the stanchions:

Hola Bill:

Thanks for your compliments, and seeing your log I´m sure your POB will be much better than the 1:64 kit.  As you, I am not very happy with the materials and would prefer more exotic and nicer woods, anyway I would proceed and see what happen.

By the way, I actually begin this model the last days of July but decided to show it in the Forum almost 2 months later.

I saw your log of the Trabakul and it is getting very nice.

Hola:

Before gluing the main rail I made the cleat platform and see how it fits. Here is important to mention that the main rail at the stern must have enough space to accommodate the transom pieces including the fashion pieces.

post-797-0-91084500-1476743808_thumb.jpg

Next step was preparing the bulwark planks.  For this the five planks needed are clamped together and painted all at once painting them, one side black and the other cream white. Doing this facilitates gluing them to the stanchions:

post-797-0-97526500-1476744019_thumb.jpg

Here you can see the bulwark done:

post-797-0-26392200-1476744262_thumb.jpgpost-797-0-11295500-1476744265_thumb.jpgpost-797-0-68121300-1476744269_thumb.jpgpost-797-0-38607700-1476744682_thumb.jpg

Finally I do the the transom including the fashion pieces. For these I used 1/64" strips instead the 1/32 that mention the instructions because I think they fit better:

Continuing with some details:

Modeling, painting and installing the Fairlead:

post-797-0-31025100-1477072654_thumb.jpg

Later I made some tests to paint the Baltimore´s Emblem that are laid on the transom, but it's really difficult to work in detail on this scale. Therefore I got the idea to do it on the computer: copying the shield and reducing it to the appropriate scale. And after several tries I obtained an acceptable result. Here you can see the hand made try and the printed one attached on the wood form

post-797-0-72849400-1477073173_thumb.jpg

Because Guaymas is a little city, it is quite impossible to obtain the appropriate dry transfer letters to make the ship´s names, so, following the same procedure I used my computer to do them:

The lettering looks pretty good - did you print it on a transparent adhesive?  I'm curious to know more details on how you got it from the computer to the ship.

Hola Andy:

To make the lettering I used the Paint program that comes with the Microsoft Office, there you can write in several types of letters and sizes, the steps are the following:

1) Select a kind of background color: for the lateral signs I used black, for the lower part of the transom, yellow and for the upper part of the transom I cheat a little and copy a picture of the planks that are there

post-797-0-87725000-1477153450_thumb.jpg

2) Select the type of letter and size, for example for the latter the size must be a little smaller than a plank wide

post-797-0-73589100-1477153710_thumb.jpg

3) Copy the Paint result and paste it on a MS Word page. In this manner you can get the appropriate size you want or making copies in a very easy way.

post-797-0-42227200-1477153533.jpg

4) Print using an ink jet Matte Photo quality paper

5) Cut and glue them with white glue

Hope this information can help you,

Saludos!!

The lettering and shield look great!! That is a great idea. I will have to try that

Posted

Hola Andy:

Well, I really didn´t match the wood color, I take a picture of the planks and write over using the Paint program, then cut the picture exactly the size of all the Transom and glue it over the actual planks. At first I tried to cut only the lettering but was not as good.
