Friesland 1663 by zappto - FINISHED - Mamoli - 1:75 - Dutch 80 gun ship

Recommended Posts

That is one beautiful looking job.  I think I had about 75mm of green strips left over. Your almost at the gunports hatch covers stage and it looks very well done. Just beware the covers for gun ports are two different sizes, they don't look it.  Nice job.

Regards, Scott

Nice I say. I do like the magnet. I think I'm still reusing nails from years ago!.  Good work.

Hi Zapto.

Very nice work with your Friesland. Must say your workmanship is outstanding.

Hint :- Hiding your led lighting wires in the mast.

I used a knife and just cut a slit  into the mast on each side. And then I pushed in a single strand of steel wire with the back of my knife into the slit. The wood closes up after inserting the wire. And it totally unnoticeable to the eye. (Copper wire is to soft to do this with)

Have a nice new year.

Regards Antony.

Zappto, I do the filler in two ways. The first step is always to take a piece of the wood that is to be filled and sand it on a sheet of medium grade sandpaper until you have a small pile of sawdust. Then, if it is a small crack to be filled, I take a toothpick and put a small amount of glue on a tip and then twirl it around in the sawdust until the glue is covered and then run the toothpick over the crack to be filled. I then work the filler/glue in with finger until there is enough to fill the crack and a little extra. For larger areas, I run a bead of glue into the area to be filled and then sprinkle sawdust onto the glue until there is only sawdust showing and then work it a little with my finger. After letting the filler dry thoroughly, sand the area as you would with the planking.

Although I'm sure that others have different ways of doing this, these methods have worked well for me. I would try any method you choose on some scrap first before doing it on your hull.

Exactly as the methods discussed. Keep adding sanding dust until you get the right consistency. It works a treat.

Thank you Antony for kind words and tips, i am sure to use them!

Bob, these sound like good ways to fill the gaps! I thought to make mixture of glue and the dust, but your way is better. I will try to use more dust and leave it on the surface and later sand it.

I fill my planking gaps the same way as mentioned - with my hull planks I sanded down one whole plank on a sheet of fairly rough sandpaper, then collected it in a small glass, then applied a small amount of pva glue to the gap and dipped my finger in the sawdust and rubbed it into the gap, but before set I lightly wet my finger and smoothed over the gap.

Then afer a couple of hours I sanded over the gap and repeated if needed.

Very tidy work - the rear planks blending into the rudder post look real great,   and the white lower paint contrasts well with the wood,   Great Wormanship.

Thank you Christian. I am still considering how to hide these wires, i might will make some barrels and make there connection for thin steel wire which will go to the masts. Or will make invisible connection under the mast base.

Today working on the bow. I find out metal parts need a lot of drilling and sanding before they can fit to they place. Few photos.

Hi,

A beautiful ship, like an example of the Brandenburg Navy. (to which she doesn't belong  as far as I know)

The section over the lion's head, will it remain gold plated or wood colored?

And the green parts of the bow, how you have done them, pre-cut or blended and shaped by yourself?

Thank you.

Very fine build...

Best Regards…

Thank you Scott, Ferit KUTLU for nice words. It is not the easiest part of the ship to build, while attaching front section green pieces, which are given by the kit, i managed to brake them down, they are made of very thin wood. Later i made golden trim around pieces which was left. I will color section over lion's head in dark  color with some gold showing. I noticed lion head was sticking too hight, it hit front mast, had to cut part of the bow.

Hi,

What I understood is those two parts (red circles) are continuation of the two timber of the bow section. Actually those area have to be wooden

Why did Mamoli prefer to finish and complete the end of a wood with casting metal?

And from picture (optical illusion?) lion's head is seen as in good position (yellow line).

How? You will cut some parts of the ornament below lion's leg to pull down the lion casting?

Me too, I had to intervene in the ornaments on my build.

Oh, i guess metal parts are easier to make then wood carvings, but a lot of work to adjust while building a ship. I already shortened wood parts of the bow to fit Lion properly, your yellow line goes in good place. Now working on the gratings on the bow section, not sure why for it worked, might for a walking.

Thank you for all likes, appreciate that. Today finished bow section build. Now will work on the deck furnitures and railings. Might anyone knows how to make small barrel? Want to add them to the deck, did not find any tutorial for that. Few photos.
