oh John.........it's not my nature to go around critiquing builds........if you only knew the mistakes that are in my builds,  you'd laugh your butt off!   my Gothenborg build is riddled with them!          the expert you hear tell about,  spent years to get there.   I'm sure they started out pretty much the same way.   mistakes are inevitable.........they do happen.   it's all built into the process of the week-end warrior,  in our efforts to attain the levels we're looking for.   we see them.......we learn from them.......and then we move on.  my philosophy has always been.......create and do the best you can.  if you see a mistake,  fix it,  but not at the expense of the overall looks of the model.

     when your done......and you say your done,  put it on the shelf.   after your third of fourth built there after,  take a look at the first one.......you'll see how much progress you've made.    it's a progressive thing.......the more you put in....the more you get out of it.  in the same time that I felt bad about mentioning it,  my aim was to help you..........I did the same thing and was given the correct information by one of the moderators,  to point me in the right direction.  I am glad that you weren't put out by it,  or angry {well,  just a little},  but it was not my intention.  you have a great build going on,  and I hope to see more!

If this site is for all praise what is the point? The bible says "iron sharpens iron" and so we all learn from each other and improve each other. It is a given which we all (I hope) on this forum accept in our best nature. Please don' t stop using that eagle eye of yours. It is invaluable (as are all the other eagle eyes on the forum).

Hi Popeye, please don't misunderstand....I greatly appreciate the input, it helps to have more than one view, and the Eagle Eyes of this forum are terrific.  There are many mistakes already made here and this only one of them....I welcome all observations, critiques, and advice from any and all.  That's one of the reasons we post pictures of our builds and progress.  The only way we learn is through our mistakes....I just like to flick the banter around with all of you, that is what makes all of this fun.  I think any attempt at correction at this point would tear and disfigure the copper plates.  They are fragile enough without messing with them, and that is one part that is not very forgiving.....especially after being CA'd.  I used the CA because it was metal to metal and CA offered the best adhesive.....and it don't want to let go.....thanks again Bro!

One thing you might consider John is painting the gudgeons and pintles a sort of coppery colour to match the plating. Iron, represented by painting them black was not used because of the chemical reaction between the ferrous and non ferrous metals. A copper alloy was used to make those fittings, at least on naval ships.

 

Will also have the advantage of reducing the impact of your particular arrangement on the eye.

Hi BE, I'm thinking about that.....the funny thing is that I made them from copper, then painted them black for contrast....go figure....lol

Yeah, that's what I'll do....it bothers me when I look at it....it might be a little while before I can do it, I don't have any copper paint, and the Hobby Store is about 25 miles from where I live.  Good suggestion BE, thanks.

it's too bad we don't live close.........I have quite a bit of copper paint  {Billing's and Testor's}.   you'd get it faster making the trek,  rather than me sending by carrier pigeon.   how is that other structure coming along?

Hi Popeye, yeah, it wasn't too long ago when I passed through your Burg... I used to have some copper paint, but lost it in the move last year.  Oh well, it'll give me an excuse to go to the Hobby store...lol.....the other structure is moving right along.  I have 2 of the 4 sides built, and should probably be finished later today if life doesn't get in the way....I do agree with ya'll that I need to cover it up not so obvious that way....too bad we don't live closer I could just borrow a few drops - which is probably all I need....and then we could give each other a hard time all the time...lol...

Well, moving on.....here is today's progress.  The rest of the Hurricane House is assembled and dry fitted.  It still needs trimout, clean up, sanding, and painting yet, but that will hopefully come later this evening.....

that's what I'm talk'in about!   is that sculpted wood......or did you plank it?    very nice!  buddy.......if I was near you,  you can have a whole bottle!    I have several bottles of copper........there's a story behind it.   back.......I'd say around the mid 90's,  there was a copper shortage...........they weren't even making copper paint.  I couldn't find any.......anywhere.   the admiral and a friend of her was in another town.......craft shopping,  and they found some in an enamel paint display.  she called me with the news,  and I told her to get as many as she could........she bought them all!   they are old.....yes.......but they are still good.......never opened {of course}.   I also have four or five 1/2 oz bottles of the Billing's copper paint.  it's not as shiny as the Testor's copper paint.....when dry,  I think it looks better.

Hi Popeye, yeah, I've done that kind of thing before too, I remember the shortage you refer to, lot's of problems on that one.  I had some and can't find it after my last move....probably got chunked somewhere inadvertantly.  I've got gold, but not copper.  I've just finished and painted the other side of the house, so I'll have some pictures in a little bit of it painted and in place.  There is a cover that goes completely over both structures, with a ladder and some davits, and other parts and pieces on the roof.  I've got to rig the wheel and tiller yet with lines after I glue the structures to the deck, then I can work on the roof structure which is next.  Glad you like it....the pictures ... more to follow ....

OK, it's painted and mounted, but not glued.  I've noticed that the camera flash brings out a lot of white streaks, that you can't see with the naked eye....it is much more critical and telling, than you can really see.  It also seems to bring out roughness of the paint finish, which you can't see either...don't know.  Tomorrow, I'll rig the tiller, and glue the structures to the deck, and also build the steering box which goes over the tiller and part of the steering structure...the pictures of it done will explain.  Strange set up.....

The white paint only covers the area you can see if you look into the windows...otherwise a waste of paint...

very well done John.........both sides look really nice together.    yea.....you can get away from too much interior painting with small windows,  but be careful with the larger openings.   the test will be when you get the roof ready to install......look in from all angles before you do       love the structures..........nice!

Hi Popeye, the galley, and storage structure has multiple windows so it is completely painted white, however the head, and officer companionway structure only has one window at the stern, so I looked through the window and painted accordingly, reserving the re-look before the roof goes on...glad you like the structures.....

Oops, sorry Popeye, I forgot to answer your question....it is planked on 1/32" basswood.  Planked with 1/64" x 1/8" planking.  The planks are exagerated to show a gap between them to simulate a siding effect.  Not sure about why it's like this, but the planks on the real ship also show a pronounced gap between them, and it is also watertite....???? So, I did the same....another advantage of seeing the real thing!

so, for today, I have built the wheel cover box....actually what it's called....painted it, mounted both houses, wheel box, and rigged the steering pulleys.  I don't like how the pictures are coming out, because they seem to show a lot of white in the grooves and tight spots, however, I can't see them eveen wearing glasses.  I try to go back to where I see them in the pictures, and add paint, but doesn't do any good.....don't know??????  Here's the latest.  Next comes the roof framing, and then the roof and all that goes with that....
