superb job on the torpedo tubes......they have the caps for them,  but I think it would look cool to have the front tubes showing a torpedo in them.  you've done a great job!........wonderful!

torpedo caps  are being worked , it will take  a little time as the have to shaped  just right to get the inside the tube look, also the caps will be a different shade than the rest  of the boat, so fitted after the finial spray of the tubes.  Plus the tubes will not attached to boat until the last

Forward & Aft 50 Cal stops and 50 Cal spent cartridge hopper not sure if I will use the hopper yet?

Still being very much a metal fabrication  novice ,  doing the stops rate the toughest project yet with every piece having to conform with the turret ring  , plus bends, shaping  & getting the heights right , much reworking & a few choice words for something that might look simple , which I quickly found out was not.

50 Cal machine gun mount with scratch built trigger assembly. And parts to assemble the second trigger group.  At this scale detailing has its limits, the working space in tiny, & you can only do so much fabricating parts. Following the weapons blueprints I got it as close as I could.

Twin 50 Cals with mounts ready to prime.  As master model builder Gene Berger is always telling me “anything worth doing is worth redoing “ I did not like the first  trigger assembly    So did it again, Sometimes you have to use a few 3D parts , however working around 3D printed parts at this scale is very fragile,  so I combined scratch built with 3D  one a better look & 2 I really broke up the original parts.

there's a kit here Lou.......any given kit you can scratch as much as you want to    I've had some that it was the only way to save it    I done it to plastic as well as wood......to be honest,  it depends on the subject really,  and how far you want to go with it.  this particular kit is great,  because you can go with either the early or late configuration without much fuss.   the reason why I ask about the date,  is that they speak of updates in the kit.  Mog's 50 cal frames look like resin.......mine are metal,  along with many other parts.

Ok guys thanks for the  comments. The kit is the same as Kevin's,  # 1233  I don't like using  kit supplied   castings  & yes I modify the kit heavily ,  the 50 cal's at this scale  standout &  give the boat  a good look  ,  the casting parts  just didn't do it  ,but that's just me anyway,  I went with 3D for the 50's & mounts , then modified them  following  ELCO plans from 1942  yes 3D is expensive, then me being a bonehead I end up using little of the original 3D part, however it get the look I want,  I don't use many 3D parts, but again at this scale there is a time& place for them.   Mike

very nice progress Mike!   the deck looks great with the fittings on,  but I'm curious about the flag.  is that supplied in the kit,  or something you made?

For flags ,numbers & lettering I use BECC model accessories .   There flags are cloth & very good quality  the flag in question is  48 star  Naval Jack  length C 38 mm , but 20-25 mm would work just fine. The jack was posted when a ship is docked or in port     I have two  US flags  same measurements , for the numbering  I use US/international pennant style  6mm , the best fit for 1/30 scale

the guns look great........did you base them from a kit {of sorts}?  I know you did some scratch building of them.   the hatch looks great as well.....the hinge is a neat aspect.  I do believe I saw the hinge sold as a long strip somewhere.........would have saved the need to use two.  I want to look back in your log,  but I may as well ask...... did you do the rudder {s} and screws as a single or a pair.  I've sluffed on the research for the time being,  but I'm settled on doing two rudders and two screws...shafts, ect. ....1) since it will be a static model,  and 2) since I don't want to make it look R/C,  but more towards the real thing.

The  50’s  & mounts started life  as a kit , both were  then heavily modified ,  on the 50’s I only kept the weapons body, everything else scratch built , with the mounts  I kept the site post & the mount carriage bracket.

Rudders, shafts & screws , three engines  three screws  on a PT ,  for me I have the parts for 3, however still not sure if they will be used, depends on the final  display,

thanks for the info Mike.....I'm probably going to go with two.   I really like the hardware involved.  the hardware kit only supplies the main shaft bracket,  and finding the center one might be a challenge,  unless the base can be bent to sit flush on the keel.  this fellow must be working with a different fitting kit,  because the angle of the shaft is less acute.  I ordered my hardware kit from Model Expo...this is what I got:

the main shaft bracket and the shaft tube......it's likely set back a little bit further.  it's going to be a feat to drill the hole for the shaft tube......I'm thinking of making a wood template to guide the drill.

the actual shaft,  the sad excuse for a prop,  the U joint,  the rudder arm,  and thrust spacer......the set screws for the u joint and spacer are in the pile, in the last picture.

here is the rudder tube,  the shaft {slotted},  the rudder,  and the pile of screws and what nots.  his rudders aren't shaped like this one either......I wonder if trimming it is needed.  if you could pass along the link for the machine guns,  I'd appreciate it.........in the meantime,  I think I'm going to look around for a different hardware kit.  those extra parts look really good
