The kit suggests painting the aft cabin bulkheads a dark brown but I planked them instead using the Tanganika deck planks that the kit provides. I like that there is a little bit of detail - the whipstaff platform and companionway and ladders. Some nice photoetch goodies for the bulkhead doors etc....

More progress this weekend, I had to temporarily pin all the ply sheets in place, check fit and mark where it all mates and install some cannon carriages where they go behind the ply bulwarks, Two of them required fudging a front truck as they fit right up against the bulkhead. On those two I cut a truck in half and glued it under the carriage to keep it square but still fit against the bulkhead.

After the lower ply pieces are glued in you remove the uppers and install the lower gunport sills, and give everything a final fairing cause the lower planking is next! Finally! Woo Hoo!

Just checked in myself after seeing it agin with this new methodology of grouping build logs, thanks for the encouragement Richard. I kind of got sidetracked by some plastic builds and haven’t done anything on this for a while. Need to work out a way to rotate everything into my build time....

Well it took me longer than I thought to get going again - I am almost done with the first layer of planking, even with this bluff bow, I used Chuck’s edge bending technique and it is working out really well.

Good to see you up and running again.  I have just finished viewing Chucks dry heat planking videos myself. How much time and energy do you put into "lining off" prior to planking?

Hi Malcolm, On a double planked hull not much on the first layer but more so on the second layer, if it were single planked it is imperative that you have it broken down into belts and each plank laid out in the belts. I just finished the first layer and it worked out ok... I added a few irregular filler planks to finish up and close the hull. I need a bit of filler in a very few spots and then I will do the layout of the final planking. Here’s a couple of shots of the finished first layer......

And one of the decks as well.... I think the keel is next and then starting the second layer of planking..... I’m debating on whether to make a new keel out of some pear wood I have. Or just go with the kit wood....

i suppose you have to make the decision about the pear depending on weather its going to be painted or not.

that 1st planking looks great

Its all part of Kev's journey, bit like going to the dark side, but with the lights on

Thanks Kevin, no paint, ever... well very little paint, I am going to have to paint the upper railing stanchions on the bulkhead tops white but I try to use different color woods to paint with. I had thought about using some holly for the bulkhead tops (and I may still try that) but I’m afraid it may weaken them too much. I am even still pondering on how to do the decorative designs that are currently on printed paper in wood. But that’s not why I am considering re-making the keel in pear, I just do not like the dibetou at all. It is very porous and weak - it seems to break easily along the grain andI just really despise it.

I plan to plank her using pear as well so maybe a different color wood might even be better. Maybe some bubinga or makore or the like.....

So I made the new stem and keel pieces - decided on some black walnut I had - I think it’s going to be a nice contrast from the pear planking, the pear is the piece with the hole in it.....I just need to cut the gammoning slot - not sure how to as it’s really skinny and I don’t have a mill... any ideas?

Lou - I would drill holes where the ends of the slot is,then use a very sharp knife or mini saw - the kind that fit in an xacto handle -  to open the slot between the drilled holes & finally clean it up with a small file.

Thanks Mark and SkerryAmp, I will drill and maybe try a scroll saw blade in my jewelers saw frame... but I don’t have a file that will fit, the slot is only 1mm thick and my smallest file is 1.5mm - guess I might get a flexi file or if someone knows of a tiny file set?   I managed to get my lower Wales marked and laid out and planked the stern and bottom of the quarter galleries - Man! That took a lot longer than I thought it would!
