Hi from Roanoke Island,

Thanks for allowing me to join the community.  I am just about finished with the Jolly Boat and have enjoyed the kit and the learning process.  Thankfully, the build logs that were available helped point me in the right direction, and then I started to get the itch to learn more about rigging, etc.  I was doing the Jolly Boat as a first "practice" build, but it quickly became more than a practice session.  I am not much of a modeler, but I have been captured by the quality of the ship models and the attention to detail that makes a true masterpiece.  I am looking at making the Caldercraft Granado as my second build, and hope that I am not setting my sights to high.  I will post a quick picture of my first build if I can figure it out....  Looking forward to learning more and meeting people!

Best regards,

Brian

The next is one I was suggesting.  The Granado from everything I've read is a pretty good kit.

I'm wondering if I should make a dilute glue solution and try to shape the sails....  What do you think peeps?  I also took some ideas from Spiff and Jmaitri (thanks mates!) and riffed on them a little, while staying within my limited talent envelope.

Hello and welcome!

I am currently working on my Jolly Boat and am at the rigging stage.

Yours looks great! I can’t help with your sail question but there could be some answer in one of the sub sections on here?

Anyway, I’d love to see some more pictures of your Jolly Boat, and look forward to seeing your next build.

Thanks for pointing that out.  I edited them to jpegs above.  Love any suggestions for setting sails to look “full”

There's several ways to do that but I haven't done sails. Both ways are usually done before installing  but here's three ways that might work. If possible, test first on old t-shirt or a cloth similar to the sails.

1)  You can use starch.  Spray it on and billow it out with a fan billowing out the sails  until the starch is dry.  You may have to do this more than once.

2) Make a 50-50 mixture of white glue and water.  Brush it on and again use the fan to billow the sails.

3) I haven't seen it done, but I've heard that hair spray will billow them also.  Again, you'll have to use a fan.

Good luck.

I tried to take a better picture of the finished launch on a green screen but it didn't work that well....but I did enjoy the build for a first timer.

Hello, nice job !  I like your base it's so original .

Thanks, I can't claim the idea as my own, however, I did improvise on the approach!

Edit: Oh duh, I just realized this thread was from 4 years ago.  Nevermind.

Welcome aboard from a long-ago resident of Raleigh and NC State grad.

For the sails, you might look at this post from @John Ruy 's Bluenose build:

He laid the model on its side and used some sort of fabric stiffener spray and a hair dryer to add some billow to his sails after they were already mounted.  I guess that is basically option 1 from Mark's post above but gives a good example.
