During our Civil War, a recognized command prior to a battle was “knapsacks off.”  Knapsacks were piled behind the battle line.  Apparently the shirkers in the regiment were well known, and one or more were assigned to guard the pile, a haphazard system.  As the war progressed, soldiers on both sides shed unnecessary and some necessary stuff figuring that they could either get by without it or find in on the battlefield.  They also found that they could roll up the few things that they needed in their blanket carried over their shoulder and dispense with the knapsack altogether.

The little that I know suggests that Nepolanic armies, both sides, were better disciplined.

Most of the light skirmishing troops tended to leave unnecessary equipment with the regimental baggage as it gave them a better freedom of movement. The 95th and 60th Rifles only took their full quota of cartridges (60 per man), a quantity of small soft leather patches for a tighter therefore more accurate shot, horn of fine milled powder and a canteen of "water"!!!

I'm not so sure of the French but I would assume they went packless also.

Current builds;

Henry Ramey Upcher 1:25 - on hold

 HMS Winchelsea 1764 1:48

Completed:

HM Cutter Sherbourne- 1:64 - FINISHED   Triton cross section scratch- 1:60 - FINISHED

Providence whaleboat- 1:25 - FINISHED

Non ship:  SBD-3 Dauntless 1:48 Hasegawa -FINISHED

I havn't found much reading about that online  - Just the battle partculars, even the kit makers seem to all fall into the same category of  throwing in the packs,   would help if they  made the torso's  complete  without the cut outs in the back  for the packs  and  the flat detail less backs  wont help  trying to keep  stuff off thier backs.

Thank you kindly for those kind words,  it just having a steady hand  - a good magnifyer  and small paint brushes, and practice as the more you do and get a feeling for how they go  - they do improve.

This is my missing piece; unfortunately, when I try to focus my hand like that I get the shakes. I usually try to stabilize my arm against the table as much as possible to minimize it (and only do a little at a time), but hopefully it’ll get better with time but even as a kid I was never good at it, my older brother was much better 🙂.

Yep,  I have to steady mine too  - I kind off use one hand against the other to steady it, and slow my breathing  down a bit  (hence why I can't chat with the admiral while Im painting).

Thank you! I’m really enjoying myself on it (just wish I could devote a little more tune to it each day, but don’t we all?).

I glue miniatures temporarily  to a square block of wood.  This allows me to lay them flat on my workbench or to clamp them in a hand vice that also lays flat.  I can then use a two handed approach with one hand on the bench steadying the one holding the brush.  With this arrangement hopefully the paint lands at its intended spot.

Beautiful work, OC.   Have you tried filling in the backs with putty?  Or something similar?

Trouble with doing that  - it will still  leave a  flat back  from how they moulded then to take the  packs  - even the straps that are moulded onto the front and over the shoulders  suddenly stop where the packs go  - it would be very noticable.

I didn't know that, OC.  Way back in the day of my doing such things, packs were separate and sometimes things like belts and scabbards were also.  But the detailing wasn't as good as it is today.

Yep ,  the plan  (for want of a word) is to place the KGL light  all over the farm with thier rifles, also mixing it with thier line  brothers, then I will use the same figures  when I get more  to do Sharpy boys 95th little group  defending the end of the wall  between the sandpits and the gravel road.
