Mayflower by Danstream - Artesania Latina - 1:64

In the past days, I tried few methods for making the glazing of the windows on the transom. I picked some transparent styrene sheets 0.5 mm thick from my plastic assortment. With my trusty old drawing tools (some pieces date back more than 35 years), I traced some grids until I found the right size that looked good in the small scale of the model and was at the same time reasonably doable.

Once found the good size, I taped the transparent sheet over the grid and scribed the lines on it with the Trumpeter tool in the picture.

Once done, I tried few methods to accent the lines, but eventually I found that the scribed grooves alone looked good enough for me in this scale.

Now I have to complete the planking and see how to frame the windows. I was happy that at the end the making of the glazing was not that difficult.

That's all for now,

kind regards,

Dan.

I have completed the windows framing and planking:

I removed the small wales along the hull because they were not fully symmetric on the two sides and with the windows frames finished, this was too evident. I am learning through my mistakes, but it is ok. Now, I would like to join that wales with an horizontal element placed just below the windows.

Hi all, after long time while I worked on other modeling projects, I am coming back to my Mayflower. I installed the upper wales and it took me several attempts to shape them satisfactorily. I pre-shaped them edgewise and out of their plane, as shown in one of the Chuck's tutorials.

IMG_7573resiz.thumb.JPG.bd0557a1bfeae13f4a9021677ba4f9e2.JPG

To follow the course of the other strakes, the wales had to be carefully bent in all planes using a hot iron.

IMG_7576resiz.thumb.JPG.ce72583d21f52bf445cb891d69d8d161.JPG

Then, I continued with the thin strakes that I also had to bend edgewise.

After several strakes, another pair of wales will have to be prepared and glued on. I am considerably deviating from the original A.L. design, but I like this way better.

Once the second wales will be on, portholes for the guns will be located in between. I realize that these are not terrific progresses, but as I said, because of my inexperience, it took me quite some time to shape the wales and the strakes correctly. That is all for now,

best regards,

Dan.

Hi all,

I installed also the second large wale which turned out better than the first one (experience counts):

IMG_7586resiz.thumb.JPG.03c346dd5fb38d9d95ccc00c97e4cc8b.JPG

This is how the wales meet at the bow once the keel is dry fitted:

IMG_7589resiz.thumb.JPG.b1e6ede7bed5a4e971355007b72d00df.JPG

Then, I also started working on the main cabin deck. Below, the part supplied by the kit is shown. It will have to be slightly modified as indicated by pencil lines.

IMG_7581resiz.thumb.JPG.d826f83f42a0cf828414ceae4cb92d67.JPG

I want to extend this deck forward so to cover part of the main deck approximately down to just before the main mast location. This design is exhibited by the Mayflower replica and is also what can be commonly observed in documentation about ships of the same period. Probably, this extension was a convenient way to extend the deck surfaces and increase the sheltered areas. I need to design the extended part and support it with beams. Meanwhile, I started to add stanchions that will support the beams and the still missing planking as well.

IMG_7588resiz.thumb.JPG.dca1b1ef659f47f6a3ba636f412c0694.JPG

I am adding stanchions not in a sequential order, populating gradually all the bulwark. Once finished, the pitch of the stanchions will be smaller that that in the photos.

This is all for now, thanks for visiting and please, should you have suggestions on how to proceed, let me know them.

Best regards,

Dan.

Thanks Yves, I am glad that you like my build. It takes long for me to get appreciable progresses, partly because I am a slow builder and partly because of the customization I like to implement on this model.

Best regards,

Dan.

Hi,

some small progress with my build, I finally attached all the posts to the inside of the bulwarks and started to work on the main cabin.

I added pencil dots for the treenails and prepared the bulkhead of the poop cabin:

Next, as said, I will have to figure out how to make the mid deck extension.

Best regards,

Dan.

Hi all,

I resumed my build of my Mayflower after one and half year. I managed to build the extension of the upper deck and to bend it as necessary. It was built of a 3-layers 1.5 mm plywood and I chose the layer orientation that offered the least resistance. I bent it soaking it in water and heating it on a curved steel cooking pot.

IMG_8124.thumb.JPG.eef2bb2796b0734055158f4b75c888a7.JPG

Once glued in place, the junction was smoothed and this is the way it looked:

IMG_0042.thumb.jpg.9f73013bce98482cc08f2d3994ab9c96.jpg

meanwhile, I furnished the poop cabin bulkhead and finished the bulwark of the mid deck. Some pictures after gluing the deck planks:

kind regards,

Hoi Dan,

Ik ontdek nu pas jouw bouwverslag. Goed verslag om te zien en je hebt een echt bouwtalent. Het ziet er netjes en heel verzorgd uit. Ik blijf je volgen.

Hi Dan,
I just recently found your buildlog. You have some serious modeling skills. Everything looks neat and tidy.

@Katsumoto Bedankt voor je mooie woorden!

Peter, thank you for your kind words, you make me blush 😄! I am glad you like my build. I know I am going sooo slow, it is because I am not a ship builder and also because I am distracted by other modelling works.

Thanks also for the many 'like's.

Dan
